Shipping refund

Hello,

We recently moved from the UK to Australia. We had two shipping companies out who estimated we had 220 cuft. Both companies said that all the boxes would be measured back at their warehouse and we would be refunded if the volume was less than estimated. We decided which company to go with and at the end of September our belongings were packed up and taken away. Prior to this we decided not to take one set of skis and a box of shoes which the shipping company were notified about before they turned up to pack everything. Because of this we were expecting the volume to be less than 220 cuft and to receive a refund. Over two months went past and no sign of a refund. I contacted the company and they told me our shipment was 150 cuft but this was in the same price bracket as 220 cuft and I was not due a refund. I find it hard to believe they can charge us for a shipment nearly 50% bigger than our actual shipment and tell me it is the same price! When they first sent us quotes we requested quotes with and without our sofas and the 100 cuft difference between these quotes made a significant difference to the price. How can they now say 70 cuft makes no difference to the price?!

Has anybody else had a similar experience and what was the outcome?

I do not want to name the company as the matter is still unresolved (waiting to hear back from a manager) and they still have all of our belongings. All I will say is they are one of the main ones recommended on here.

The opposite happened to us. We were quoted for full use of a container and chose the shipper who gave the higher price but who we thought were more professional. We left several items behind (including a range cooker, a church pew and all garden furniture), and all of our items went in to the container with space to spare. We then received a bill for extra cubic footage once our container was at sea, despite the fact that we were under. The managers refused to speak to us, and in the end they debited OH's card without permission. Irritatingly, as it was a UK credit card and we didn't have internet access to the account, it was three months before the statement arrived in Australia with us, and was too late to dispute the charge. Happy to let you know which company by PM.
