Customs duty

Hi guys.

I understand items less than a year old have to be declared and if they cost more than $1000 they will be charged import duty.

Say I have something worth 1500 do I get charged duty on 1500 or 500 since items below 1000 go in duty free.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

You might not get many answers as majority of people take off wrappers and do not disclose the age of items.

Everything you import as personal effects and household belongings under a year old can be examined for customs duty fees. There is no threshold of $1000.

If you are buying something off the internet from overseas then the threshold applies. If it's valued at $1001 including shipping then that is the taxable value, not just the $1 over.
