We are just applying for an extended family visa as both children are PR in Oz. We have just discovered we will be grandparents in January and wondered if we do decide to apply for PR ( which now is more likely with grandchildren in the mix) would we have to return back to Uk.? We are now unsure if it is wiser to rent out our property just in case we have an option to stay as we will want to spend as much time as possible with the family. Do we need to return to UK to apply for a CPV? Can anyone advise

First of all are you over 65? In order to be able to apply for the Aged CPV onshore and be granted a bridging visa to allow you to stay in Australia you need to be over 65.

Secondly the 600 visa sometimes has a No Further Stay condition imposed on it, and you will not know this till you get your visa, ad this means you will not be able to apply for the onshore CPV. Why not apply offshore before you come and then come for a long visit? Processing time is around 20 months at the moment and you would need to be offshore when the visa is granted.

Alternatively, the e-visitor visa which gives stays of up to 3 months at a time, does not normally have the No Further Stay condition imposed on it. Although it is not actually legal to travel to Australia as a visitor with the intention of staying, but people have done it. Be aware that if granted a bridging visa, you will only have limited access to Medicare via the reciprocal healthcare arrangement until your visa is granted.
