Jobs in Cairns

Hi myself and OH are hoping to make the final move over at the end of 2015.... We really liked Brisbane but we also like the possibility of moving further north specifically Cairns.

I am a secondary school teacher but i have specialised in Special Needs Education with experience working with children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. I have 15 years experience in this area as well as qualifications up to Masters level.

My OH is a nurse - he changed careers in his early 40's and will have 2 years experience by the time we arrive. (Degree in Adult Nursing)

Its sounding like a CV now but .....

I am wondering if anyone in Cairns knows about potential future job prospects in education/health for us both?

(We have PR)

When you get here (Cairns) register with TRACER for supply and short contract teaching jobs, my husbands experience (last 1 year) is that there is plenty of work from day 1 and once you get known longer contracts get offered. Cairns has a shortage of teachers.

As you are considering Brisbane you need to consider whether the climate and relative isolation of Cairns is something you really want. It is certainly a beautiful area here with a laid back lifestyle.

There is plenty of job opportunities for nurses in Cairns, can't see there should be a problem finding work.

Thanks for replying. As our daughter isnt coming with us but staying in the UK for university we are a bit freer to travel and explore Australia - we looked at Brisbane due to the university. We hope to move around but like the idea of Cairns as a start - having lived in Botswana previously the climate and lifestyle should be fine. Sounds like it could be a goer!!Any suggestions of suburbs, areas to consider etc would be great!

As anoh has said jobs will be fine, I have plenty of teacher friends up here and some that do contract work so give me a shout if you need some contacts. You may find you will find more work going through an agency for the nursing as well. I spent 6 month last year as a patient and got to know a lot of the nurses, most work for the agency and move between the base and the private

Oops forgot to mention suburbs, it depends what you are after, if its beaches Palm Cove is lovely, a little far out but compared to the commutes you get in other states its not bad, also look at Trinity Beach, Trinity Park, Kewarra and Clifton Beach. If you want to be in the rainforest then look at Redlynch, Redlynch Valley, Brinsmead. If you want acreage look at Gordonvale or if you like the hills and the weather a little cooler look at Kuranda (although be warned the range gets blocked every wet season which is your only way down to the City) If you want somewhere with a European feel, a little village with street Cafes look at Edgehill. I could easily move there.

Avoid all the suburbs close to the city especially the ones beginning with M.

Hi thanks for the reply and the advice.I've had a look at a few properties to rent at all of the above locations....very lovely!! My husband doesnt like living too far from where he works due to shifts so Edgehill looks a good possibility. (Though it seems quite close to the suburbs beginning with M?)

is there a particular nursing agency he should register with?

Thanks again!
