AQIS DAFF confusuion

I was wondering if anyone can provide some guidance.

I believe the AQIS fees for inspection of your containers is now refereed to as the DAFF fee. Is this correct, or are there two fees?

Does anyone have an range we could expect to pay for inspection?

We are shipping a 20 foot container and will be trying our up-most to ensure everything is clean and nothing contentions is packed. We have had some good advise on what to avoid taking.

There are two shipping companies in contention at the moment. One charges £500 up front for DAFF, the other leaves it to you.

Any advice apreciated

I am a Director of Insure Your Move Ltd.

We have been asked a number of times by PIO members if we offer insure against 'increased/unexpected' AQIS fees. At present, we are researching the whole subject and any comments or experiences made by members who have already moved and have been subject to these charges would be very much appreciated.

One fact we have already found is that the costs vary significantly - there is not a set standard charge - therefore we do not understand how a UK remover can charge these costs 'up-front' when even they don't know the final cost of the inspection or if an inspection will actually take place.

As Burlistic states ' Any advice appreciated'.

Thanks

There is only one inspection for containers by the DAFF, usually referred to as AQIS as i believe this is the department responsible (now under the Biosecurity arm...).

As IYM say the costs do vary, this is because it is based on the time it takes to inspect your shipment as well as application fees... and then if any of your goods require treatment (such as fumigation, cleaning or disposal) then there will be charges for this too prior to release. Based on previous experience we advise our customers to expect around AUD$450-500, although this is of course something we cannot guarantee.

So, depends on how comfortable you are with the element of risk vs. the potential saving :) and/or if you have a preferred mover aside from this issue...

Thank you KirstyLP for your reply - two further questions.

As a remover company, are you aware if the customer can pay the AQIS fees directly as opposed to through the remover in Oz (who we presume will add their own admin fee) ? Secondly, is it customary for a copy of the actual AQIS invoice to be given to the customer with a breakdown of the fees or is this retained by the remover in Oz ?

It is possible to pay directly if you are arranging to clear customs yourself, this website explains more on how - http://www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity/travel/moving-emigrating , however most of our customers ask us to handle door-to-door transportation including customs clearance as we will then handle the process for them rather than split it. The way we work is our office in Australia will invoice the client for any quarantine inspection charges once they know what they are, as well as any treatment charges. Customer's aren't provided with the actual AQIS invoice as standard but this would be available on request.

Thanks for the info!

We have decided to go with the shipping company who leave us to pay the AQIS fee. Your information helped make the decision and has put me at ease. Hopefully our container will get through without too much trouble. We will be making sure everything is super clean and not put anything suspect in there.
