  1. I am afraid you do. The carrier contacts Apple to approve. Have been to many phone shops in Perth, they all say that they are unable to unlock the handset. Orange are either making it difficult on purpose or are inept. The complications came about because the number was swapped to a PAYG sim and their system thinks my wife has not owned the phone for the required six months. Be warned. Get your phones unlocked before you leave!
  2. I would certainly recommend shopping around. But I found it still came out expensive considering the risk. The insurer I spoke to said they have NEVER lost a container. More likely to be some breakage or water damage. Our stuff arrived safe and sounds and I saved 900 gbp on insurance. The removers at this end did say they have seen some horror stories mind. Mainly when people have packed their own containers poorly.
  3. Unlock you iPhone before you move. Orange has been a nightmare since we tranfered to PAYG and then tried to unlock. Beware of buying a new TV to take out here. The Free view set up can be different and Panasonic TVs are region locked. Think twice about insuring your container. It costs a lot and if professionally packed your stuff should be okay.
  4. Thanks for the info! We have decided to go with the shipping company who leave us to pay the AQIS fee. Your information helped make the decision and has put me at ease. Hopefully our container will get through without too much trouble. We will be making sure everything is super clean and not put anything suspect in there.
  5. I was wondering if anyone can provide some guidance. I believe the AQIS fees for inspection of your containers is now refereed to as the DAFF fee. Is this correct, or are there two fees? Does anyone have an range we could expect to pay for inspection? We are shipping a 20 foot container and will be trying our up-most to ensure everything is clean and nothing contentions is packed. We have had some good advise on what to avoid taking. There are two shipping companies in contention at the moment. One charges £500 up front for DAFF, the other leaves it to you. Any advice apreciated
  6. I have came across info regarding the 80% rule which puts me at ease a bit. I normally have a few different unrelated clients a year, so it looks like I can continue to operate as my own business (or trust). http://www.ato.gov.au/Tax-professionals/BAS-agents/In-detail/Key-resources-for-clients/Tax-basics-for-small-business/?page=59#Working_out_if_the_PSI_rules_apply_to_you Hoping to do further research and finish getting everything set up. Looking forward to joining the Perth contract market. Thanks for your advise Bibbs. Knowing there are contractors in work helps put me at ease. The last thing I want is to move out there and struggle with finding work as I am the only earner and have a young family to support.
  7. Thanks for the feedback. I would like to stay as a contractor if viable. Bibbs do you and your colleagues operate outside of PSI? If so, how? I have spoken to Deacon accountants and the advice they have given points towards operating as a PSI contractor. It would be great to retain the benefits I enjoy whilst operating as an indepentant in the UK.
  8. Does anyone have advice on IT contracting in Australia? I have been working as a contractor with a limited company for a number of years in the UK. I typically have contracts with 1 to 4 different clients a year. My specially is Agile coaching and development on the .NET stack. Now that I have my visa and flight booked I have been doing research and the PSI rules seem pretty locked down with regards to tax benefits of freelancing. I have read all the obvious stuff but would appreciate some practical advice. Is contracting worth it in Australia (specifically Perth)? Do you earn enough extra to make it worth your while? Do most IT contractors operate within PSI? Are they any obvious conditions that mean I can continue to operate as an independent business? Any advice would be appreciated.
  9. In March 2014 I am moving to Perth and wish to continue as a Agile Web Development Consultant. Can anyone recommend an accountant to help me set up my company and do the books? I understand that contracting is fairly common in Australia but I am finding it hard to find accountants online.
  10. Thanks Bibbs. It is reassuring to hear that the contract market is healthy out there. How long did it take you to set up your company out there? Is this something I can do from the UK so I can hit the ground running? Not sure what the pension stuff means. Guess I should do some more research in this area. Thanks again for your feedback. Will W
