Need to leave Australia to have baby's visa granted... Where should we go?

Delays in granting the Child Visas mean that we are likely to be taking 1 week's holiday out of Australia in January/February to have his visa validated on return.

Where do we go? Any suggestions? Pale, Scottish skin here so nowhere too hot... 2 kids under school age so shortest flights possible really... AND not too expensive as we are a bit skint now.

We had originally planned on a few days in Auckland but our case officer has advised AT LEAST 3 working days so there went our extended weekend plans and now it is more sensible just to go for a whole week that covers the 5 working days to make sure we are ok. Just not sure where would be the best place for the best value.

Also, what travel agent is best to use (We are in Melbourne) - we have looked at Expedia and they are quite expensive. Hoping for some holiday deals after Christmas but the schools are all off so unlikely to get a cheaper deal I guess.

Thanks for any help.

Fiji? They adore kids there.... or New Zealand for a bit longer? You can gete some good fly/drive packages with motorhomes there and Jan/Feb will be lovely weather.

travelonline.com.au I find is pretty good for offers, or some of the daily deals sites such as Scoopon and Deals.com.au

How about flying to Christchurch with jetstar, renting a cheap campervan and travelling /camping in the South Island - the government own a bunch of campsites which are really cheap - just a few dollars a night for some stunning campsites.

If you google "direct flights from Melbourne" one of the first links that comes up is a list of all the places you can fly direct to without having to change planes, with the flight times and airlines that fly the route. We've been to both New Zealand and Fiji and loved them both... for different reasons: scenery in NZ is amazing, beaches in Fiji and people there are lovely. So it just depends what you are looking for. Camping in NZ would probably work out cheapest there, and in Fiji you could look at somewhere that does all inclusive packages to keep a lid on the costs. Lots of places also do the "kids stay free" in Fiji.
