We always expected to find something there.....The whole area being just outside the old city walls is where hospitals, monasteries and more (like Smithfield where markets and fairs were held, and of course where the meat market still is) were based - no one wanted pestilence in the city. Fantastic area of London When you find these things they're always buried very deep....not because they started that way but because the level of the city has risen over the years.
