Question about Reference Checks and Pre-employment Medicals

Hi guys and gals,

I have a concern on employment in australia and I wasnt sure if you would able to provide an insight on how the employment process is like in Australia.I am a Permanent Resident who's currently on assignment in another country but I'm planning to move back to Australia to work.

I had a telephone interview last week with a state-owned enterprise from Perth, the interview went well with the HR Manager and the Reporting Manager. On the same day I was told that my application would be processed further and that I was asked for two references whom they would contact, and a pre-employment medical to be done offshore as I am in singapore working on a project that's going to be closed.

My concern is is it normal for all Australian employers to ask prospective candidates to go for a pre-employment medical? I am obviously excited about the role and all my hopes are pinned on this great opportunity, but I am also cautious if it is just a routine in the employment phase that they would ask all international candidates to go for medicals and then ask them to attend another few rounds of interviews (aka. just another step) So if you are able to grant some insights into the process, any honest feedback it would be greatly appreciated. I've got another offer of employment as well, so both are running on the same timeline that I would need to reply a confirmation of employement on, but my obvious desire would be the Perth opportunity.

Thank you all guys for any information and feedback !

Regards,

I would think that it depends on the role you're going for. I had to answer a health questionnaire, but I also know that in my previous role/life we had to have Occupational Health clearance before offering any jobs ....

Does that help? Not sure if that helps or not - fingers crossed :)

Thanks for the reply JoandJon, for the role I am applying for it does not require any physical labor, mainly an office role. I guess I am just trying to pinpoint my chances of a job offer now that I've been asked for a Pre-employment medical checkup and they have already contacted my references...
