Guest jamesand emma
Hi all, not long now till we move out so we're just looking at houses and trying to put a budget plan together, would be good to know a list of the household bills and what people are paying (family of 4) do you have council tax to pay out there ? also a general idea of car insurance and car tax per year. Are second hand cars easy to come by and what sort of prices, i dont want anything flash was thinking perhaps of a Rav 4. would be great to hear your views, Thanks Emma
Freckleface
Hi Emma I don't live in the NT so can't really help with living costs however you could check out this link for secondhand cars. http://www.carsales.com.au/
andyjmason
Hi We moved to Victoria last December and are now checking all the details out for a move to Darwin with work. We have found it pricey to buy a second hand car-we paid $6000 for a ten year old basic astra. It would have been about £2000 at home if that! There is no council tax, there are Rates instead. If you rent, the landlord pays them. Not sure how much they are if you buy, guess it depends on the house, area etc. Utilities vary and you should do an online comparison when you move in to check you're with the right provider and switch if necessary-beware of tie in charges etc which I haven't come across in the UK. Car Insurance with Coles was the best deal we could find and works out at $45 a month for a comp policy, incl windscreen cover, breakdown cover and car hire for accidents etc. They also gave us 12c off petrol vouchers -one per month. No car tax, REGO instead-we think this is pricey at $650 a year for our car. It includes some insurance though, but you still need your own cover. No MOT, you just need a road worthy test and certificate done before you sell your car. Make sure the one you buy also has one, incidentally the length of rego left on a car you buy is important if you want to avoid extra costs. When you buy a car you have to pay a tax at the Road Authority place to transfer ownership. It's a percentage of the cost and a one off charge. We have a 3 bed, compact house here and its only $350 a week rent. Water is $54 a month, gas is $125 a month-we have gas heating and it does get cold here some of the months. We don't have air con but our electricity bill is quite high $150 a month, Foxtel (like Sky TV) with UK channel and Sports sets us back $102 pmth. We get our broadband and home phone through DODo which was the cheapest deal- $70 p/mth roughly inclusive. Mobiles seem unfair, no pay as you go, instead $30 a month with Telstra pre pay seems the best option. If you don't want internet access on your phone though, Telstra simplicity may be best-calls back home to the Uk are only 15c a minute that way, although skype is your best best if you can use that instead. You're probably here by now, so the info might be useless! Hope it's all gone well for you all. Jo
andyjmason
PS Darwin seems way more expensive for renting or buying than Victoria, although wages seem better too.
