Advice on areas near to Royal Prince Alfred in Camperdown.

Hi, We live in Brisbane and have some friends who are planning on moving to Sydney early next year and they need advice on where to live and have asked me to find out.

He has most likely got a job in the Royal Prince Alfred hospital in Camperdown so don't want to be any further than10K away due to on calls etc. They have two young children so want a nice family area near to a good school. They have heard that Campsie is nice but are not sure if about other areas around. Also it would be helpful if they knew a few good estate agents around to get in touch with. Any advice would be great thanks.

Budget is the big question for anywhere in Sydney as it's considerably more expensive for housing than Brisbane

 

Inner West suburbs would seem to be the obvious startpoint (the Inner West is generally taken to be the area north of Cook's River and as far west as Burwood, north to the harbour

 

Generally the closer you are to the harbour or city, the pricier. But it varies. Balmain, for example, is expensive as is Glebe. Much of the inner west has a mix of typical Sydney terraces (small to medium sized 2-4 bedroom houses with the classic fretted iron balconies) with modest standalone houses on reasonable plots. Anything up to 4 bedrooms, not much bigger. Good transport links everywhere, lots of little parks, good mixed community areas. Campsie is pretty similar to the Inner Western suburbs north of Cook's River, slightly more spread out with a bit more space but a bit cheaper so a decent choice. It's hard to generalise about any suburb as they are so varied - eg in Dulwich Hill the area around the station and New Canterbury Rd is pretty grotty, go a few hundred yards away say around Johnson Park and it's lovely.
