Resident For Tax Purposes

Recommended Posts

I have been in australia for over 7 months now, I know that I am a resident for tax purposes after answering some questions on the ATO website. I also know that I am only entitled to the 'tax free threshold' when classed a resident for tax purposes.

When did I become a resident for tax purposes?

Will I still be able to claim the tax free threshold on any wages before I was made a resident for tax purposes?

Sorry if this is not clear.

Depends what kind of visa you're on, etc. I would have thought that the ATO would have that kind of info on their website, but it might be a good idea to see a tax agent/accountant and they can sort out your tax return (assuming you have to complete one for 2012-2013). It costs us about $120 each, which isn't much compared to the amounts we can claim back.
