Guest FamFive Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Hi can I ask all a question from them who have already moved to australia and them like ourselves just moving! What kind of budget would you say a family needs to set aside until work is found etc)., from your savings? For say a car, medicare, rent, house admin\food living expenses etc until work is started really. In AU dollars? Any information would be great
Life on easy street Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 How long is a piece of string It depends on what life style you are used to. How long to find a job which depends on your trade building trades find jobs quicker than say a teacher. I would not like to move to Australia with less than $40k but $75k would be a lot better. Melbourne Housing A two-bedroom apartment close to central Melbourne costs About $270 to $330 per week + gas, water, elect, phone. The landlord pays rates. But if you are prepared to live more than 30mins from Melbourne Then you rent a two-bedroom house for the same price. Food Eating out is cheaper than the south of England But super market shopping is more expensive Unless you have time to shop around. E.g. Bananas $4.99 per kg at super market But only $1.80 per kg at Victoria market Cars Second hand cars are more expensive than the U.K
Guest EM&M Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Which state are you moving too?? Maybe someone in that area would be better to advise as it does differ from state to state. It will also depend on what size property you are looking for etc. Em x

Looking on the bright side, your husband should hopfully find a job fairly quickly. A lot of PIO members have mentioned that work in the building trade is easy to come by. Cara

I assumed a couple with 2 young children with only one person working. If both of you are working and you have no children then $40k will be more than enough to last you until you get a job. If you have a U.K property to let out that provides you with income Even less money is required.
