Each state is allowed to set its own rules.  If a job isn't massively in demand then they may decide to take only people who've already got a job offer.

I'm pretty sure for WA unless you work in construction a contract of employment is a prerequisite for a 190 visa.

Sorry to jump on this thread but I did a SCITT with the PGCE side through a university. I have contacted the University and they have been very helpful so far and have said if I can get the SCITT to provide them with the information of my supervised hours they will include this in their document.

So, to avoid missing anything out before I send the Uni all the details to include, could someone check I've included everything...

    • Academic transcript
    • Evidence of supervised practice (do they just want to know how many days? Or any other information?)
    • University headed paper - dated and signed

    Anything else?

Keeping fingers crossed this will be enough to convince AITSL!

They want to know how many days, what age group, what school, what year group.

As far as what to say to them I'm not sure because my migration agent handled AITSL they just asked me for documents etc.

Hi, can I ask who the agent was that you used? We are looking to relocate and we were hoping to look at the 190 visa.

I have a BA Honours in Education (3 years), followed by a SCITT  but without PGCE as I had already completed all the modules (or similar) in my uni degree.

I am currently working an Australian International School  as a classroom teacher and Head of Year. My performance management is assessed against the AITSL standards  and I teach to the ACARA outcomes yet I won’t even make it through the skills assessment. Seems insane!

    Hi Leah,

Unfortunately I think you'll have a hard time with AITSL because they state explicitly the course must be 4 years, and one reason people get rejected with SCITTs is the lack of academic rigor (their words not mine) so without a PGCE and only a 3 year course it'll be hard, you may have to go back and do a masters in education, but speak to a Migration agent about this. I used TrueBlue Migration, they're not cheap but they are always reply daily and were very helpful to me before any contracts were signed.

You need an employment contract before applying if going to WA? I haven’t seen this before.
My partner is in the process of contacting some companies to see if that’s an option but the experience side of things is no issue!

Only if you're going for a 190, you need an employment contract guaranteed for 6 months I believe.

    Why do you say that?

Neither job is on the list for a 189 visa, but they are for a 190, I thought those lists were the same but clearly not! But they are both on the short term lists.

In fairness your advice about an agent is the best course, they can answer all these questions and know what visas are available to your careers.

  6. Checking your emails daily? Waiting for the invite? Let's wait together 😅

I put my 189 EOI in on the 21st December 2023, (PTE test on 18th), gutted to have missed the last invitation round!

Anyone else out there currently waiting for an invite?

My partner and our 2 kids are looking into our best possibilities to get over to Australia. After discussing for years we’d now like to get the ball rolling. We’re trying to work out whether we’re best applying through his work as an arborist or mine as a primary teacher - both are on the skills shortage but from the info I’ve found so far it looks as though it may be better job wise for him. We will go through an agent, just trying to work out beforehand.

Is there anywhere you can see which states have a higher need for certain jobs? I have looked hard for this so sorry if I’m missing something when looking! We do have preferred places but are not completely shut off.

    Thanks

It's not a question of which job is more in demand. I know that sounds a bit mad, but it's the way it is.  What matters is, which of you can score the most points?  That's what will give you the best chance.   An agent can calculate that for you, so no point wasting time on doing your own research.    Get a quote from Go Matilda or Suncoast Migration.

Another question is are you planning to move permanently or temporary? Both jobs you can't apply for a 189 visa so you'd have to do a 190, isn't much of an issue unless you want to move to WA as you need an employment contract before you can apply for a visa, this is tricky for teaching, maybe less so for an Arborist I'm not sure.

Could always look at a 186 visa for employer sponsorship, but you need 3 years experience, and the employer needs to agree of course 😅

Just re-reading this. Impressive to get a successful AITSL assessment. What did you need to notary signature for? And yes we are both in the wrong business!

I'm not 100% sure why I needed a notary signature, it was suggested by my migration agent to support my application, essentially just said these are the modules I did at university, these are the ones that were accredited by the university and how they met the standards, screenshots of the module handbook etc. Basically, proving my SCITT was the same level as a straight PGCE approach.

No problem she would be a grad teacher. There's nothing wrong in looking after your students and their grades, just potentially an aodd time for teacher movement, but I am sure in maths there would be roles available. Potentially with us!

Yes the weather was rubbish, I had a train terminated at Temple Meads not ideal when going to London. Anyway that's another story and I am back in the sun!

That sounds promising, suppose I'm lucky maths is usually in demand. It's a relief regarding my wife, she was worried she wouldn't be able to teteach.

Fingers crossed for an invite sooner rather than later!

    Hi All

I'm currently in the UK and just so happened to open up my laptop. Lots of rain in Cornwall and Plymouth! In terms of finding a job role there certainly is more flexibility in terms of gaining a position from the UK. This wouldn't have happened a couple of years ago. That said, schools will want to know that you are ready to go and able to work as soon as possible. For example, we will have a Maths role to start after Easter, I am sure we would provide a contract for an overseas teacher in the current climate. (I am thinking this is too early for you!) But trying to plan any longer than a term would be unrealistic. Schools don't want to be burnt by a teacher who changes their mind but likewise want to show commitment to them as there is a shortage.

Location is a big factor of course. Perth area and NoR don't have the same shortage issues as SoR. I work and live in Mandurah and we have all been jostling for the same teachers who have chosen to make the area their home. If and when you're ready to make the move I'm happy to send out your resume to schools within your preferred area, we are pretty well networked over in WA. Likewise, if you would like me to look over it I am happy to do so. It is a bit of a minefield and I was grateful for some friendly advice so feel free to ask any other questions.

Tell me about it, the weather in Bristol is awful too!

We discussed where to live and decided SoR and would prefer anywhere from Rockingham to the Greater Mandurah area, so that sounds pretty promising.

Easter is too early for me, this may sound odd considering we're leaving the country but I made promises to my year 10 students last year (Now Year 11 students) that I would stay until they finished their GCSEs. I would like to keep this promise and exams usually finish around May/June. I figured this might be how long it takes to get the invite, go through the visa process and be accepted anyway, although I have certainly heard of it happening quicker.

I will definitely send a CV over when we're ready, and would appreciate any feedback you would have for me.

I have a different question regarding my wife, she has recently qualified as a Primary School teacher, but due to our move will not be able to finish her ECT 2 year period (previously NQT 1 year), would she be able to work as a teacher or would her not finishing her ECT period be a problem?

I was about to say @benj1980 was the best person to ask, but Marisa got their first. If I'm not mistaken Ben works in teacher recruitment in WA, so he might even be able to help the OP find a suitable position. I don't think you'll have any problems finding work in teaching at the moment, although it may not necessarily be in a location that you like.

I think arriving a month before you are due to start work is probably long enough to get yourself settled in if there's just the two of you, but then you might want factor in some R&R time so you can have a bit of a break before you start your new jobs.

We also have 2 daughters aged 12 and 7, so I think more than a month would be sensible as we have to find schools too! Thanks for the advice 😀

  12. Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to find a teaching role in Western Australia while still in the UK?

I submitted my 189 EOI last week as a secondary school maths teacher. I know there's a long way to go yet, but me and my wife were discussing moving before finding a job or using the 1 year period after getting the visa granted (hopefully), to find a teaching role and move over 1 month before the job starts, providing some level of financial stability. Any advice would be helpful 😀

    Cheers in advance!

Oh we care about your degree class, unless you've got cast iron global experience going back 15+ years you aren't getting into the company I work with without a first, and we check.

Think big 4, and you'll have a 25% chance of being correct (although they all have the same rules and they all employ background checkers to make sure)

In fairness I worked at EY for 2 years as an Audi Associate without a degree, got in on the school leavers programme, it was an interesting experience. Ended up not being for me and now I'm a Maths teacher, but other routes are always out there! 😀

  14. I have just gone through AITSL as a Maths teacher who qualified through a SCITT with a PGCE alongside it and got a positive assessment . It was a long journey, took roughly 6 months instead of 6 weeks but it is possible! I have to say I don't think I would have got a positive assessment without my migration agent, they know what you need to do and were very helpful to me, I'm not going to name them don't want this to sound like an ad!

But just to say to anyone thinking of applying as a SCITT, yes it is possible, but it's hard and you never know what the outcome will be, but how will you ever know without trying?!

  15. Finally today received my positive skills assessment! It took 6 months as opposed to 6 weeks and I had to to back and forth with AITSL about my qualification and get a statutory declaration, (which cost me an extra £200 for a notary to sign, I'm in the wrong business!), but it all worked out in the end! At one point it seemed dead in the water as they requested documents I couldn't provide but my migration agent was brilliant, if you're a SCITT and unsure of how to proceed I'd highly suggest getting a Migration agent as they know how to word letters etc. I'm using TrueBlue, can't fault them tbh. Onto the English test now! 😀

SCITT's are hit and miss. I got through but others haven't. The transcript from my university was a 'reference transcript' which stated what I completed in terms of study.

I have a letter from my university stating my teaching days, topics studied etc. So fingers crossed! It's been 9 weeks today since my application was put in by my migration agent. I'll keep you updated as information for other SCITTs would might apply one day.

    Hi Haydn

Definitely stay in touch, we're always on the lookout for good teachers for when there's vacancies. If you have any questions on the process I am happy to discuss this going forward.

Sounds great! Unsure of my AITSL application at the moment, submitted 6 weeks ago heard nothing. I did complete a SCITT with a PGCE, and I know they aren't always kind to SCITT applicants, but I do have a letter from my university detailing my teaching hours etc so fingers crossed!

We are at the stage where 3 members of staff have left to work out country (temporary promotions) and 2 people who were offered contracts have done the same leaving us short of teachers. So if anyone is keen in working in sunny Mandurah (well it's raining today) let me know!

Currently working through my skills assessment as a Maths teacher, funnily enough me and my wife are looking at Mandurah as the most likely place to live! Will definitely be in touch when (hopefully 🤣) we land!
