I’m not worried about the costs but I am concerned about the stress on my dog. I was asking if anyone had any experience of it not personal opinions of the rights and wrongs of it, with respect!

I’m sorry to read this. Doesn’t help that you come from such a beautiful place in the UK. Did you work for the NHS there? They have quite a decent defined benefits pension. Are you staying in Aus because of kids? I don’t want to leave my grown up kids - and my husband loves it here but all I can think of is retiring in the UK.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes I’m staying here because of my boys . I can’t bear the thought of leaving them although they’re grown up. 😔

@Peety,If you feel that strongly, don't delay.   Start doing your research now.   Don't think "I'll move back when I retire",  because you may find you can't afford it then.

The difficulty is that if you leave Australia before you're eligible to claim the Australian government pension, you will never be able to claim it.   So you either have to leave now and start building up your entitlement to the UK pension, or you'll be stuck in Australia until you're entitlement age--which the way things are going, could well be 70 years old.

I would suggest finding out about paying NI contributions now, and maybe backpaying some missing years as well.

Also make sure you understand what the deal is with superannuation.

Thanks x we’ve got super tied up in property. Nothing too exciting just a two bedroom flat in Melbourne. I’ve got maybe $50k of super in the UK other than that nothing so financially I’m stuffed. My ex told me not to get lawyers involved in our divorce but I’ve definitely been disadvantaged. I’m so ashamed and embarrassed tbh to be in this situation. I’m 50 with maybe $200k that I could get if I sold my crappy house. I’ve worked full time for the last 30 years as a nurse it all seems for nothing. Definitely not enough to buy a think in the uk.

I guess I just need to look forward to the next chapter in my whatever the hell that would be.

We moved to Perth in 2007 from the rual West Country. It was all about our then 17 yo having an opportunity where little existed. Plan was to settle him into Australian life, gain our citizenship and return home. Of course plans change. He found a lady and started a family of his own.

Whilst I love my family I am not so keen on life in Australia. I have not settled in at all, only making acquaintances and no real friends. Finding I have little in common with those I meet, so now I don't bother. I use to be enjoy a good social life, whereas in Australia I have done. Once this Covid mess is over I am contemplating leaving my family and returning to the UK. Feel like these past 13+ years have been wasted. As I move into retirement I don't want to spend it wishing.

I feel just like this now. Moved from Bath to melbourne. I’ve been here 14 years now, kids grown up, divorced after 20 years living on my own in Gippsland. 10 years from retirement. I’m yearning to go back to Wells, Bath or anywhere in that location. I’ve never felt so alone. Biggest mistake ever coming to Australia.

  5. Hi there

I was just wondering if anyone lives around this area? I’ve got a rental for 6 months looking to buy around Woodside beach, buy land then build. I’m applying for a job at Sale hospital but will continue to work in Melbourne once a month,

it would be great to meet up for a coffee I’m moving next week. Thanks in advance.

If this is the case then surely both solicitors were negligent in not asking "where is the inclusions/exclusions list page of the contract?"   In which case you can make a complaint about service to the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner...as well as a complaint about the real estate agent to Consumer Affairs Victoria.

    Yes I agree.

You must have a really different system of selling property in Vic.

We sold our house in NSW earlier this year. On the front page of the standard contract was a box listing all the inclusions/exclusions. Hard to miss thus very easy to check it was correct.

Don't Victorian contracts have something similar?

Yes Victoria definitely has the same thing, signed up by us but this part was not given to my solicitor or theirs. We’ve got a copy.

I take it this was an Australian sale?

The document listing what is staying etc is standard in the UK, and they wouldn't have missed it. I can't believe they didn't ask for it in Oz. How did they complete without it?

Why didn't you leave the oven if it was broken? Was the dish washer integral or free standing?

Yes it is standard in Australia but for some unknown reason was not given to the purchasing people. I didn’t want to leave a broken oven so thought I was doing them a favour by taking it out. The dishwasher is the same as the washing machine just needs to be unplumbed. If we had known we would have left it there but we were not told a thing by our agent.

I'm sorry to hear your estate agent was useless.  That doesn't really surprise me.  What did your lawyer say about suing the agent?

It is very unusual to remove a stove or dishwasher when you are selling I have to say and the agent should have queried that.  Too late now though.

The lawyer has said nothing about suing the agent but I definitely will. The oven was not working and this was stated right at the beginning of the sale. The stove wasn’t removed just the oven. The dishwasher I don’t think was a problem as we needed one for our new house, all this was upfront and above board. We never tried to hide anything. But obviously now it’s a problem. Thanks for taking an interest 🙂

  10. Hi

ive recently sold my house. I completed the REIV checklist in advance stating what I was taking eg. oven ( as was broken) dishwasher and a few other things. However, it wasn’t until the new owners moved in when quite understandably they were upset as these items were missing. The agent failed to give the REIV checklist to my conveyor and theirs. I’ve had letters from their solicitor to say that I must now pay for these items as they were part of the sale. The realestate agents have been utterly useless and have left me “ high and dry”. I guess I have no option to pay then sue the agent for not doing their job. They’ve had their $35k commission and I feel abandoned by them.

Any thought from people who know about this stuff?

    thanks

  11. Hi there

Ive been living in Melbourne for the past 12 years. I’m from Bath in the UK originally. I’ve got 2 boys that have now left home so I’m on my own now with 2 cocker spaniels 🙂

I’ve been working as an Emergency Nurse in Melbourne but I am looking  for a change. I will need to rent a while I guess until I find something. I’m happy to move states if need be. I just wanted peoples opinions (especially nurses) on locations. I did look into working at Sale hospital but as usual nobody gets back to you in Australia.

i would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks in advance.
