    Hi there PIO

We have our visa and travel exemption- and flights booked.
we fly London to AbuDhabi, then on to Melbourne. And finally on to Sydney. All with Etihad.

my questions- if anyone can help:

    1. do my 3 and 6 year old need a PCR test before we depart?

    2. where will we quarantine? If Melbourne, we won’t be able to make that last flight. Luckily we can move the date of it I think for a small-ish fee.

    3. if you have been bumped from flights - how much notice do they give? (We are in economy 😬)

thanks all!!! See you soon (hopefully!)

At the present time, unfortunately you have probably just invested in Etihad with 0% interest. Tumultuous times for flying in at the moment.

You are correct it is a defined benefit scheme, if you have a statement around the time you arrived in Australia that should give you the value of the lump sum.

Ahhh, this is an excellent nugget. I'd not have thought of getting a statement from them - many thanks.

Very exciting for you! My understanding is that critical sector visa's (PMSOL) are very quickly turned around. You may want to revisit the visa option with your employer and look into a 186DE instead of a 190 as it will likely be quicker if you are definitely on the PMSOL

I would definitely advise to follow your dreams and try not to listen to the negative noise. I was told the same things on this forum when I came over here on a 482 in early 2020 (just as COVID was emerging around the world) and I am permanent resident 16 months later. I also had my visa (non-PMSOL) turned around in 60 days. Just stay informed and do your research.

    All the best!

I'll second this and my experience of getting a 190 through was very fast. Doors sometimes open when you don't expect them to so keep yourself informed, don't listen to the negative noise from the usual suspects and don't give up if the opportunity looks like it should be a realistic offer and opportunity.

    Hello,

I have submitted my PR application. I understand that I can apply for Medicare. However I already have a reciprocal agreement card. But This doesn't include everything (elective surgery for example).

I am under the impression that the Medicare level I can receive whilst my PR is being processed is on par with the "full" Medicare someone with a granted PR receives. If so I assume it's worth upgrading to receive the additional benefits?

Having a look online it's really giving me any answers!

    Thank You

Yes, it's worth doing straight away.

Why? They diagnosed broken ribs and dislocated ribs from my sternum. Said I should have gone to hospital straight away.

They gave me free painkillers and anti inflammatories which worked wonders.

I don't think private health cover would improve a visit to any ED. Depends on the hospital and your condition for wait times. An ankle injury isn't going to kill you and there may be more urgent cases coming in that kept bumping you.

I swallowed a bee that stung my throat once. By the time I got home I could hardly breathe. My wife sent me to ED and as soon as they realised I had problems breathing I was in and being treated in minutes.

Another time I'd hurt ribs in the gym. Put up with them for a couple of weeks but couldn't sleep and coughing, sneezing or even turning round quick was really painful. Thought I'd pop to ED at the hospital near work, which is big and busy. As soon as I mentioned chest pain I was in and wired up to all sorts of machines. Even though I told them I'd done it at the gym a couple of weeks before😁

Next time just say you have chest pain then mention the ankle when you're on the right side of the door.

And this is why you have long waits in ED. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourself.

  7. With Wise accounts set up on app and linked to my UK account I transferred money from Wise account AUD to UK Santander account at great rate in 4 seconds this week...

Who'd have thought, ten years ago, that accountants and auditors would be taken off the list?  Nurses ?  They were all slated for removal pre-Covid.

Another poster (in the same industry) has said his only option will be a 491. If that is the case, it means Australia already doesn't want his profession unless he's willing to live in a regional area.  That might change in the future, or it might not. Why gamble if you don't have to?

Cost, time commitment, unsure if want to move, not got qualifications yet, not got experience yet, not got skills yet, other commitments in UK at the moment, all of these for partner...

But, as to the original question of insight into the IT industry, I can't really help mate as it's not in my lane.

  9. I'd get your ducks in a row and look at what is best for you. I don't agree with the "certainty" that there will be fewer and fewer places. If we've learnt anything over the last year it is that the only certainty is uncertainty. If you have all your qualifications and experience and points look good for an occupation on the list then crack on and apply but don't imagine options will definitely vanish. People on here have been proved very wrong about this assertion in the past.

Is your profession one where Australia is going to need fewer of you in the future or where home grown talent will begin to fill the need? Seems unlikely...

    Okay thanks for those recommendations.
As I mentioned in my first post it’s likely we wouldn’t move for another 2-4 years. My partner is finishing up university and has to do a pharmacy pre reg year in the UK first. I simply posted here to get an idea of working life in the IT industry in Aus vs UK. I’m not currently looking for a job, just researching.

Don't worry, if you asked how much a pint of milk costs in Australia the response would likely be "Very expensive, your experience in milk buying won't be recognised here you know and you'll never get a visa. Also, I can't help but wonder why you want milk? You know you can buy almond milk, and, it's litres not pints..."

  11. Wow! What a lot of ridiculous scare mongering about what can be a lovely place to live!

Darwin is certainly always hot and can be very humid but that's a given and the weather can be lovely. There are some tropical diseases that are more common than other areas but it's not like you're going to be living in a tent in wetlands for heaven's sake. Mosquitos aren't a big problem. I'd look at a nice house or apartment a bit North of the city in Nightcliff, Rapid Creek area. There's no traffic to speak of so you'll be into the town in 20minutes at "rush hour" anyway. It's a great gateway drug to Australia and a place I'd consider moving back to in later years of life.

    Hey All

Just looking for a little thought on my position.

We have Business Investment Visas lodged (188a) and back in January was allocated a CO and received a S56 notice requesting us to obtain Medicals and Police Checks. We submitted and completed the same around the 12th February but since then have heard nothing?

Any thoughts guys on how long I could be waiting to hear further?

I was initially advised within 28 days they would assess my case, then was advised it could be March/April.

Just seeking opinions as we really feel our lives are on hold right now having geared up for leaving beginning of March 😞

    Thank you all

Did you then resubmit? I seem to remember needing to push "go" on it again when we had done the medicals.

If you’re transporting the furniture and all then I would say it would be very tight unless everything was flat packed. Shove in a couple of beds, dining set and a 3 piece suite I’d  think it would be full to overflowing! We had about 80 items - mainly in medium/large removal boxes but they definitely varied in size from a bike box to DH’s tool box..  We measured out the volume in the dining room then piled our stuff up in the 3 dimensional space we taped out.  In the end we actually fitted more into the actual cube than we appeared to have in our test space and we did have a bit more room to play with but we wouldn’t have got a 3 piece suite and beds in there too - we didn’t need to take furniture at all.

43C8935A-0DC0-4335-A8AA-608A9EAA4EE6.jpegEdited to say, looks like I did put perfume in there but as I use so little I am surprised that I did! DH did the labelling, with weights and put anything potentially contentious at the back for easy inspection.

The dimensions of the largest Movecube are roughly 1.8m x 1.5m x length 2.2m.   Try marking that out on your floor, and mark the height on the wall.  You're not going to fit your whole house in that!   I think they mean you can ship by booking multiple Movecubes - but that's misleading.

For instance, when we were thinking of using a Movecube, we measured up our sofa and our queen bed and realised that although they would fit in a cube, the shape that was left would be so awkward that we couldn't use the space for much else.   I'd think if you want to use the Movecube system, you have to leave your really large pieces of furniture behind.

If you are going to use a Movecube, then there's no substitute for what Quoll did:  you need to set aside a space in your house and do a test pack before the cube arrives.  You only have a day to pack it so you need to know exactly what you're packing beforehand.

There's a severe lack of Dad holiday boot packing skills here! You could easily have got Marisa's bed and sofa in that 1/3 full cube!

I can't remember what/if you said what speciality you are and where you are heading? I kinda remember interventional radiology but that might have been someone else. We are loving Brisbane. Hard work but compared to NHS it is hard because you make it hard and are able to do it well rather than fire fighting, sometimes not being able to treat people that you would want to and being completely wiped out at the beginning of every day let alone the end.

  16. Your anxiety shouldn't be an issue for the medical. Are you on treatment?

I'd suggest maybe resolve to lose weight for yourself and your son rather than for something ultimately outside your control. If your very obese then your son likely won't have a mum to love for as long as he might and you might not see all the joys in his growing up.

No you don't understand how it works. If I go to Spain and show them I'm financially able to support myself I can apply for residency. Why would I need another passport?
