  1. As VS has said, watch out for school fees - that really depends on the state you are planning on going to but range from $4k-$10kpa.

Yes you may well struggle to find work - temporary visa dependents aren't attractive to employers as they could be off with 2 months notice and they might get more bang for their buck with a young home grown option. If you have a professional skill in high demand then once you've got through any registration process you might score locum type work. School hours work is highly sought after by Aussie mums and you would get no assistance with after school care.

Would it be worth my while registering with temping agencies, would they try and look for work for me or are they more likely to put an Australian person first as well

  2.  Find out what the school cost are if any and negotiate them as part of your husbands salary package. It is a perfectly reasonable request for an employee who is relocating on a temporary basis, if you were permanent you wouldn't have to pay it and you don't have to pay in the UK.  If you don't ask you don't get [emoji16]

We're going to Melbourne, I was under the impression that we didn't pay any fees there

  3. They can do another two year extension, but that is it and he has no path to pr.
You should make sure you know what a 457 is. It is a visa with a lot of issues including:
It is tied to the employer and if he loses his job for any reason, you have 60 days to find another company willing and able to sponsor or leave the country.
Many states will charge for education for your child. I think the average is about $4k a year.
The partners of 457 holders can find it difficult to find work.
You are not entitled to any state benefits.
Option for credit are more limited.

Ok thank you for this information. So I may have problems looking for work then. I will just have to wait and see how it goes or just have a 2yr holiday[emoji1] [emoji1]

  4. Hi my husband is being sponsored by his employer in Australia to work there. We have just finished our application for this and sent everything off to the migration agent and now waiting for an answer.

My question is, with all the new rules and regulations that have come in will my husband's visa be rejected due to his age he is 45 now or will they allow it through for the 2yrs we will be coming in on. We are just a bit concerned that after paying for police checks etc that it will be all for nothing.

  5. Emirates, Etihad & Singapore give 30kg standard. We phoned Emirates & Etihad prior to booking tickets to see if they'd give a bigger allowance as we were emigrating & they said no.

Have you thought about getting your stuff shipped & delivered to a storage place? Not sure where you're moving to but we're in Sydney & when we moved we'd pre booked for our shipping to be sent straight to a storage company, as like you we did an Air BnB. Luckily we found a place to live before the shipping arrived so we were able to change the address. It cost us nothing to change it & the storage company didn't charge us either. They're super cheap to rent, at least they are in Sydney.

  6. Thanks for the information, I have looked on Emirates and they say 30kg but I'm a bit thick really does this mean that are you only allowed 1 suitcase per person or can you take 2 suitcases. The company will pay up to 15,000 dollars but that will include returns flights to UK a small move cube will cost about 800pounds but as we don't have an address we can't send anything by this method of transport can we?

  7. Me, my husband and son will be coming out for 2 yrs later this year, husband's got a job and 457 visa is for 2yrs. My question is how many checked suitcases are we allowed on the flight. We can't ship anything out as we are stopping in an air BnB place for 3 months then will be looking for our own place to rent.

  8. No test required as long as you've held your license a certain time. Just book an appointment, turn up, pay the fee and your license will turn up in the post 10(ish) days later. I did have one small issue with VicRoads, they thought my motorcycle entitlement wasn't over 3 years old (a glitch when I went from old paper to plastic UK license). Luckily I had my paper part with me and I was able to show I passed the test in 1990 so all was good.

Quite easy then, how much is it?

  9. You can get an international type 'pass' from the post office but in general getting an Oz license is the way forward. It's a pretty easy process from my experience, we started in QLD and then transferred them to VIC when we moved. I know VIC do require you to have VIC licenses after 3 months of taking up residence, I'm not sure if the requirements in other states. We had the option of 1,2,3,4 or 5 year licences at differing rates. Also an Oz driving license comes in handy as a proof of residency (for school, rental applications etc) and some car insurers load premiums or won't even offer cover for overseas licences.

Thanks is it easy to get one, or do we need to take a test like in England first

  10. Hi I'm not sure if I am in the right section, but can anyone help me out with a quick question regarding mobile phones. I have a contract here but I am cancelling it before I leave. Do you have such plans as pay as you go I've looked on websites but they all are like contract where it renews at the end of the month. I was just hoping to get a sim card and then be able to top up as and when I needed. Is this not possible.
