  1. Sorry if I’m repeating another thread on here but can’t find anything when I search.

We are going to be entering Australia on PR visas next month and I was wondering if anyone could give me some quick advice on travel and life insurance?

I have travel insurance through my uk bank account. Does anyone know if this kind of insurance would be valid until we sort Medicare out?

What have people done about their uk life insurance when they emigrated? Cancel and get a policy in Oz?

    Thanks [emoji4]

  2. Hi, we have been out here 2 years now, it was my 1st time but not my hubbys, we live in Perth, such a beautiful city, we still have our home in the uk we rent it out, we will probably use this towards our pension.  The 1st six months were really hard with training and everything ( electrician) but we both now have great jobs and couldn’t be any happier, good luck x

Great to hear your story! I hope ours is as successful. We had our visas granted just before Christmas and hoping to head out in July. We’re jumping straight in, renting out our uk house and taking a sabbatical for a year to suss everything out, if we find jobs I’m hoping it will become a permanent move then we’ll just need to sort out shipping our stuff (keeping hold of our uk house for the time being at least).
Good luck everyone! It felt like such a long process when we were in it but still hasn’t sunk in we’ve actually got them now. It took just short of 5 months for us from the day we submitted the visa Application
  3. Just got visas approved! My partner got the skilled migrant visa and I’m going in as his partner.  I’m a primary school teacher looking to move to Victoria (Melbourne suburbs or Geelong area). Are there any other teachers in that area on here?
I’ve just started looking into registering to teach in Victoria which seems to be a long process!

Congratulations on your grant! Unfortunately I can’t help with your question, my wife is a Primary school teacher though so interested to hear the responses you get.
I was wondering if you would be willing to share your timeline up to your grant? How long did you have to wait? We submitted ours in July and hoping it comes soon! Good luck finding your answers

  4. Hi Clem,

At what point are you being asked for references ?
We have our invitation and filling out application currently - I would have thought all the references etc were done?

Hi, We haven’t been asked for them, I just know some people added references when uploading all their documents to prove employment years they have claimed for.
  5. Do you need to sell and ship everything cutting all ties to the uk? We’re taking a sabbatical from work, renting our house and giving it a year to begin with. It’s been much easier for family to accept as they are hoping we’ll be back in 12 months [emoji16] and that way if it doesn’t work out we haven’t lost anything. We’ll come back to the same jobs, same house and had an amazing adventure. Good luck with it all

  6. Hi, wondering if anyone can help with this.

Do you need to be a practising catholic in order to teach at a catholic school in OZ? I’ve taught in catholic schools over here and it’s not been a problem that I am not catholic, however, I read somewhere that schools wouldn’t employ people out there unless they were practising catholics.

  7. I wouldn’t worry about him being behind when you come back (if you do). If he’s 3 now and you spend a couple of years in oz you’ll be coming back when he’s 5? So he’ll have hardly missed anything. We start kids far too young in school in the uk, enjoy the extra time you have with him, your adventure in oz will be worth a million school days here [emoji16]

  8. I may be very wrong so I’m sorry if that’s the case and please ignore this post, but if you’ve done a teaching degree, would you really need to do a PGCE afterwards? Surely a PGCE is for people who have a degree and then want to become a teacher so add the teaching qualification on afterwards. If you’ve done a teaching qualification as your degree, why would you need another?

  9. Hey guys! We paid for our visas on September 12th! How long before most of you got a CO assigned?? We have uploaded everything apart from medicals and police checks as pregnant and hoping to defer my medical until baby arrives! It's such a waiting game isn't I! Our visa is a 189 accountant with 75 points x

We waited 7 weeks to hear from a co, they then requested medicals and police checks. I’m not sure if that’s the norm though, some people hear a lot sooner

  10. Hi, I'm also an early years teacher and moving to QLD next week. From my experience so far there are plenty of jobs, but each one I've applied to I've been turned down as I don't have experience in aussie schools. Since i'm on a PR visa i'm going to be doing relief work (supply work) i'm hoping this will lead to a contract. If you're going to be living in one of the cities your best bet would be to do relief work get your face known, mention your early years experience and that will hopefully lead to work. If you're looking for a permanent position straight away then you will need to work in a remote location. In terms of additional training as you've got 4 years uni education that's fine, however, a few of the schools I've looked at said they favour people with a masters degree. Hope that helps [emoji4] good luck. Jess

Let us know how you get on with finding work when you have settled there!

  11. Thank you everyone! Even though there has been some negative feeback, i do feel more confident in our decision to go! I mean, it doesnt have to be forever does it?!

What does it matter if in 5 years time we still havent settled or feel like its not for us? We can just come back, but at least we would have had an awesome adventure!

Plus, that pit in our stomachs will have gone and we will forever know we tried and it didnt work. Or we may be the opposite and create more opportunities for the kids and settle amazingly!

Yeah the kids may grow up and venture off into other parts of the world etc etc.... but to be honest, although i would be devastated at that prospect, i would be increadibly proud of them for being brave enough to take that plunge! (Plus it would mean more holidays for us as we get older haha) xx

    Thanks, Emma x

Absolutely! Good luck with the move

  12. You keep mentioning the blue sky. . .
Seriously leaving everything behind for a "blue sky" is a very superficial way of looking at things.
You'd be better putting the £x0000's it will cost for visas, flights, time out of work, housing, gap training, cash lost on a cack exchange rate etc towards multiple holidays to Spain every year and get your blue sky that way.

I think you’ve completely missed the OPs point

  13. I can't really help you there but hopefully someone can! Maybe worth starting a new thread to get more attention. I know you can boost your points with the language test but not sure which section SEN experience would give you more points in unless it's under work experience in Australia?

  14. I have browsed the forum over different periods and have noticed shifts like The pom queen says. I have also noticed recently that the UK Chat section seems to be the most frequently updated. This will often be very pro UK as this is the choice people have made. Whatever decision people make in life they will seek confirmation that it is the right one. Somewhat ironically, it is also where I have heard for the first time about recent large scale terror attacks in the UK. Those who dislike the UK may comment on how these attacks affect our everyday lives for the worse over here, whereas in reality life is no different and I found out via an Australian forum.
We have a great life here, some aspects may be less desirable in Australia if we go ie. we live opposite a beach here but are looking at an area about 5km inland in Australia. other aspects we hope may be preferable for us (not so cold winters as we are looking at sunshine coast). Here we can surf without threat of sharks but have to contend with ice cream headaches in colder months. pros and cons to each.
Once we have our visas we will only go if I have a job in advance. We will rent our house out here and aim for 5 years in Australia in which we hope can get citizenship. It is an itch I have always wanted to scratch. I wouldn't move to a lot of areas in Australia however, as I prefer where we are now in the uk. It is a vast place and likes or dislikes for an entire country  can't really be based on one place.
I feel sometimes that we as a family have gone too far in looking for the negatives in Australia so that we don't have an unrealistic view. It is a confusing time and I know if we do make the move I will have night terrors of 'what have we done'. On the other hand the thought of doing my same job day in day out for the next 30 years fills me with dread - and I love my job! Nothing is forever. If we go we will go with the thought of giving it 5 years. our children are young enough to come back and pick up where we left off. if we love it we will stay.
sorry that was long and rambling and probably no help. your doubts are quite normal. 'It will all come out in the wash'

I think this is a great attitude to have! Nothing is forever anyway so there's no need to close the door on anything. If nothing more it's experiencing life in a different country. Don't let anyone put you off your story, if this is what you want to do then do it, no one can tell you 'I told you so', this is your experience not theirs.
We love where we live at the moment but to be quite honest Great Britain has lost a lot of its greatness for us recently and so we're off on an adventure. If we come back in a year or five years and decided actually the UK is amazing after all, then great! We're all winners; we'll carry on living in our family home, go back to the jobs we've been doing for the last however many years and our kids will continue to grow up here plus they will have had one hell of an adventure to tell their friends about [emoji16]

  15. I find it all really confusing to be honest. When I emailed to say I had uploaded the documents I got an automated response and in that it said "don't email the department to say you have uploaded documents" [emoji15]doesn't make sense to me. Anyway, fingers firmly crossed we all hear soon and we have grants and then it won't matter [emoji16] good luck all!

  16. We had our medicals cleared today and I've uploaded our police clearance certificates so I've clicked the 'information provided' button. Do I need to email the department as well and say that it's all done? I found the letter we had from them when they requested police checks and medicals really confusing as it mentioned contacting them with the information on the email they provide on the letter.
