  1. My husband works as a scaffold supervisor and is coming over on my 457. Is it easy for home to get employment? We know he needs to take courses on landing to get him to his advanced level and he has over 20 years UK and Middle East experience. I have been been chatting to a few Australian scaffold managers on linked in and some have mentioned he may get a bit a bit of hassle if he is on the same pay rates as the locals! Is this right? Will he have a hard time in construction over there? Any my advice greatly appreciated! Worried wifey!
  2. Cal I love this link - thank you! Been having a sneaky read whilst in work, but will have a proper look this evening, so far its fab, just what I needed -:jiggy:
  3. FAB! I will definitely check out Redcliffe - my working hours will be 8 - 5pm in Oz but I expect I would work over - I work very hard now in the UK, currently doing 9 - 5pm but never leaving work until 6 - 6:30 (and even 8pm has been known one or twice) and also working / eating through lunches - everyday! - so I guess I am used to the work hard mentality. You describe your weekends exactly how I envisage mine will be - which sound absolutely perfect! I think we just want a more out doors life style with lots to explore. Never really settled since landing back in the UK and Australia has always been our dream. My husband works in Construction and as he gets older the outdoor working in the winters are becoming harder for him. So lovely to read your thread thank you xx
  4. Thank you for such a positive read . I was sitting reading through the comments last night and all I could think was "Has no one got anything good or positive to say" when you tittering on the edge of deciding whether or not you should make the leap of faith. you need to hear something good.We really do want to go and make a life of it, but I keep reading so many negatives. We would be very much like you and make the most of the night with heaters etc.... I love this "Overall QLD is great, you will enjoy what awaits if you have an open mind and are willing to get out there and give it your best shot" Thank you x
  5. thank you for this! It's hard to know the places to live when reading in. Website. Going to check them out now! Thanks again
  6. Lol I'll take that on board! Just checking out transport links to creek street x
  7. great advice.even though I am on a 457 I am not worried about being moved if it came to it. My work is plentiful, I had quite a few interviews / offers with sponsorship and there would have been more real opportunity if I had my feet on the ground in Brisbane! My role has been on the CSOL list for years in all states but Perth has defiantly slowed down. Not on sol granted but it's there and I can't see that changing. I am only slightly worried - will it work, what if I don't like it? (which is the norm with any new job) ,but push come to shove if it didn't! I have 3 month to find another sponsor and role and I am very confident I would. ur right about parking - I doubt I can negotiate that in my package so public transport it is i think we'll definitely stick with Brisbane for living - it makes sense my hours are long enough in the new role 8am to 5pm - if I need to work extra I could do that at home. Certainly not wanting to work until all hours at night lol! So I guess I could fit a bbq in or as Marisawright said . Chardonnay on the veranda whilst cooking a meal sounds very appealing x
  8. typing errors should read Heathwood and Moggilt, just following nice suburb advice on homely.com to get an idea. We are 40, no children and two small dogs. So somewhere nice n pretty with cafes, restaurants and basic shops would do us! Nightlife we are not bothered about! Be great to travel to a mall close by or something. Never though of Redcliffe but will have a look, thank you for the transport advice - really good to know X
  9. i know what ur saying and many people have said the same so inner Brisbane is our first choice. But we still haven't ruled out the others I think we just need to scope it out ourselves. I have been been looking at west end, new farm, heartwood, mogul, mitchelton, carisndale, sunny bank etc etc . And there is some lovely places. Al wit a wee bit expensive but doable! I will be working on creek street 15 min walk from a sea cat drop off, so I'm looking at that as an option. What's parking like in Brisbane CBD during work week?
  10. were looking at either Brisbane inner suburbs or helensvale, coomera etc. Don't mind nighttime BBQ with candles (citronella ones as that to keep insects away) we used to do that in Dubai and it was enjoyable. I am certainly not going to stay indoors at night to watch tv. So I suppose it what we make of it really. Have to say....not getting anything real positive on this thread lol! We have work place bullying, Ozzie work behaviours and too dark, too many insects lol
  11. Lol! Workplace behaviours... Can you elaborate We moving on a 457 and hope to get PR eventually too! You get a bit worried thinking...what if I don't like my employer or they don't like me What then!!!
  12. Hi All, i I thought I would create this post to hopefully get your views, likes and don't likes and generally "what life is like when you have moved to Queensland" on a thread. We move in Oct and aswell as being excited, i am nervous too! Hoping we have made the right decision? I I view life out there as a work hard through the week and enjoy relaxed downtime by the BBQ of an evening and then off out to explore the many sights, beaches and culinary delights of a weekend, that I keep seeing! I know there is pros and cons to live anywhere, and Brisbane has a few I get this! Expensive food, rental and commute to Brisbane form Gold Coast areas. But I think that is worth it for sure if life is generally good over there! We have lived abroad in Dubai for 5 years a while ago, so know we can adapt and make a go of it. But I thought how lovely it would be to hear your take on what life is like over there for you (and yes, that can also includes the good, the bad and the ugly side lol) anyway I hope we get a few stories and views on life in Queensland as it would make such a good read! I have read countless books and Internet pieces but hearing from the horses mouth so to speak would be far better for us upcoming newbies xxxxx:yes:
  13. Man and wife and two fur babies travelling in October to Queensland! Either Brisbane suburbs or around Gold Coast! Undecided!
  14. Hi we have a Mercedes ML 280 cdi sport 4x4 2006 plate with 80000 on the clock valued in UK between 9 - 10k - is it worth us shipping it to Brisbane?
  15. Its been so good to hear all you views and takes on living in Brisbane. And I am feeling so much more positive about my new job and move (although Zack - you have worried me slightly about the recession LOL) You know - I have worried myself silly about all the what if's... But no more! You only live once and life is certainly no dress rehearsal, so I am going to throw caution to the wind and go for it - even though its a 457! Who cares at most ill have a nice adventure and England to come home to after four years and if I am lucky I may get a PR! I think my location decisions can only be made once I experience it myself but I will definitely be taking your sound advice on board and it has helped me immensely. So off we will go to Oz, armed with a abundance of insect repellent and fly swatters LOL !!
  16. Scouser & a Wirral squirrel (Both just hit our 40's) - on way over to Brisbane in Sept / Oct - Hoping to meet a few more like minded people - Anyone in Brizzy?
  17. Hi Bob Pet Air, I had quote from yourselves in the early days - My two dogs had their rabies vaccination on the 11th April 2016 and an all clear result. They can fly end Oct / early Nov right? I will be contacting you guys again to make sure my measurements are ok and then im going to book!
  18. Hi Sunshine Col! You may have your social calendar booked up by now? But thought I would get in touch on the off chance? Well be landing in Sept / Oct this year in Brisbane and we both come from Liverpool / Wirral and in our early 40's - So it would be lovely to meet like minded people for a few drinks, eats and a good laugh. Rugby not on our radar at the moment, but hubby is quite keen to experience it! He is a Blue (but does not live, breathe it - thank god!) Now that would drive me mad! Anyway it would be good to hear from you - So hopefully I will soon, take care xx
  19. Hi Sausage Supremo - So lovely to hear your positive note. I understand that commute and the problem I have is my husband could very well be based in GC? We wont know until her arrives and gets a job as he is on my visa (lucky sod) but I think I wanted to be near the coast in all honestly. But I would definitely consider Brisbane suburbs - ideally we would look for a clean and green area, dog parks, shops and restaurants - Oh and maybe a few bars or two (although that is not a must) I do believe that the commute would be bad for me after hearing from others - so I will definitely start to look into Brisbane suburbs too - What about Wynum and Manly also? I am going to have a good look on the link your provided me, so thank you very much for that
  20. lovely to hear from you srh82 - Any recommendation on places to live near Brisbane lol! I hope I get a PR too x
  21. Hi Wirephobia - just seen you PR results a below your reply
  22. Thank you for you reply- its great to hear you went through similar - can I ask did you sell on a 457 visa or PR? We are on a 457 and taking a huge gamble. xxx
  23. I know what you are saying about the sale of the house but we need the money for the move, i.e. furniture shipping, pet relocation, hitting the ground with rental deposits, temp accommodate the list goes on. Yes my employer has said that they can provide PR Sponsor but I am also ensuring I get my Australian quals in HR when I am there. My role as HR Manager is on the CSOL list so there is a possibility of applying myself on a points score application I hope. Currently I am going over as a recruitment Executive and I have worked in recruitment and HR for over 20 years - recruitment roles are endless over there in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne - I am quite positive if my role was to end for what ever reason there would be another employer willing to pick me up with a sponsor as I am on the ground there, there's lots of job advertising that option of sponsorship if your in Oz. Maybe I looking through everything with rose tinted glasses but I do believe I can make it happen as that was a big worry of mine. Its a huge gamble and my thought are (as there is a lot of capital in the house - for a deposit) worst come to worst - we come home and buy another house! God I sound really positive - yet I am quite nervous about it all! lol x
  24. The company who is an approved sponsor has recently brought people over and their office manager told me to hang fire, until they get approval and my TNR number - as I am paying for the visa myself and if anything was to fall through their end I would loose the money. So I am hanging tight! LOL!
