has anyone in perth heard about their test? It seems to be taking a really long time for them to be processed in the Perth Office?

It was debated yesterday. Anyway, it will pass the House of Reps and be sent to the Senate - where the relevant committee will report on 4 September.
Thanks Roberta, I have no idea how all of this works! it really is gonna take a long time hey! Hopefully they dont keep them all on hold for that length of time!

Its all gone really quiet, does anyone know anything thats happened since the second reading?

That number is a bit old, the backlog is now actually 100,000+.
In any case (regardless of what happens with the bill) post-April 20 applications we are looking at a very long Citizenship processing time (1 year+) as opposed to 3-6 months in the past.
This whole mess created by the Minister is unnecessary.
Agreed! what a mess!
I am still fairly confident that they wont be able to back date it! or they wont be able to keep them on hold much longer!! but I guess im just trying to be positive lol!

I have spoken to my local Federal MP's electorate officer and my Territory MP about this (both Labor). They have both said that there is/has been a lot of behind the scenes wrangling going on over this subject as the proposed changes will have a massive impact on the Northern Territory and for rural Australia as a whole.
I just hope that when parliament resits that the issue is finally put before the House and finally voted on so that everyone will know exactly where they stand and can get on with their lives.
Yea i hope so too! Its already created a massive backlog for the Department with over 80,000 applications 'on hold'. I really hope they dont drag it out much longer, It could add months and years onto the processing time!

I have seen several posts on here stating that any application made on or after the 20th April has been accepted but put on Hiatus. Is there any physical proof of this or are these just statements made after speaking to Immigration? I only ask as I am eligible to submit my own application for Citizenship at the end of this month under the present rules.
Thanks!
I have submitted my application, i then received an email from immigration saying there may be a delay in processing it and that the new rules would apply. It also says that the Department will contact me again when my application is progressed to the next stage.

Just needs a case at the high court and this freeze and back dating will be thrown out by a judge.
It's unlikely anyone would take it that far though id assume!

Pretty sure the government has no power to freeze citizenship applications for no reason. The current scenario is purely political. Back dating this whole process and then keeping people in limbo for 2 years is not within the powers of a minister. You are talking about law abiding peoples lives put on hold.
100% it can get thrown out by a judge if it's raised to high court and applications can resume until new laws are actually drafted.
Question is who is willing to put this to courts, unlike USA we don't have groups here to protect and fight for immigrants.
Yea I hope that they can't, but at the end of the day they can almost do what they want, all they have to do is blame a change in reaources or shift some priorities and it's all justifiable again!
I would been keen to see what happens with applications like mine now, if they decline them, it gives people the option for a review at AAT! That would be interesting!

His is all ballocks to be honest australia dont half do things the hard way wife is as well switch off and wait till next year in july when she will have her 4 yrs pr. As its all if,buts, maybe, not sure and just does your head in.
I couldn't agree more!! I feel for you and your wife! It's so uncertain and annoying!

What do you mean 3 month period is this still under old or new rules.
So what does this mean for wife who was eligible 1st june under old rules and in july will have 3 yrs pr? But new rules its july next year.
Sorry if you become eligible for the new rules within three months of them changing the law then they will roll your money over to your new application.
it guess it depends on whether you have decided to apply or not! If you have and they do change the law you may lose the money, or you may not!
-
I just spoke to immigration to and asked what would be happening with my application she said that it will be only hold until July/August until the legislation has been discussed more!
She mentioned that that people who aren't eligible for the new criteria MAY get a refund and said they have been advised that people who happen to become eligible for a three month period after the change the department would hold their fee meaning they wouldn't have to pay again.
I told her I wouldn't be eligible under new legislation for another 3 years and she said its very likely that I would have to wait that length of time and meet the new criteria.
everyone we all seem to speak to there has something slightly different to say but it's looking more and more likely that those who applied after 20th April are in for a huge wait, some changes and some diasappoinemnt!
Keep positive people!

looks like DIBP has started to process application lodged on April 19.
We will see how they handle those applications submitted on of after April 20.
Wow! Did amit really get a test date 4 days after he received notification of the test!? I must know how to do this! Lol

Hi @Keep me in oz, what was mentioned in the acknowledgement letter? I wonder how you applied online. Am going 4 years end May, not that keen to do it, but since you have done it, I am interested to know what will happen to your application. Can you please let us know the progress? Thank you.
Sure, I am happy to help!
I applied online and filled out all the questions as anyone would I guess.
i got an automated acknowledgement within seconds. Money has also left my account.
in comparison with other visa, all was normal, no weird questions or anything about the proposed changes other than a few warnings about them

Hi @whtzau, yes. that is the same info in my immi account. My understanding is you can only apply for paper application, but looks like @Keep me in oz was able to apply online.
I am confused now if I should do the same
I'm not sure it would make all that much difference if you apply online or via paper would it!?

Yes but can you? Or have the not changed that part online yet?
I know from experience with mine i could only apply last year on a date when i was eligible.
But as we have new rules are we still eligible to apply under old rules if we are what happens then?
They leave it on hold? It slips through? Or the laws dont pass and we have head start?
Or could they reject it and not refund the money?
It would be great if my wife can apply as it would have been 1st june. But now to qualify under new rules as pr she is now july next yr which will be the 4 yrs of pr for her.
We if she is eligible to do online still on old date will give it a shot but surely they not cancek it as its a bit of work just getting all the stuff together.
And as for any police check im not going to rush into getting that as only good for a certain time 12 months if i remember?
I have now submitted, got the acknowledgment straight away! I
I hope it means it will all be prossesed before the laws come into effect! Not sure though!
It nit worried about not getting refunded it's only 280
I don't need a police check

My app is all submitted! I only have 1 year pr, here's hoping!

So what does all this mean? Wife was eligible 1st june 2017 was on partner visa which is 2 yrs temp and 2 yrs pr come july this year she will have been 3 yrs pr.
But under these new rules she cannot apply till july 2018 as needs thar extra 1 yr as pr.
Do we still apply and can you online? Or should it be paper based? Prefer online.
Or will she simply not be able to apply as all these rules etc etc are not even passed yet.
I know its backdated etc but has anyone been able to apply online and got further under old rules.
I would hate that come 1st june she could have applied but we left it till the extra yr is up but could have sooner or we just dreaming.
Essentially nobody knows what's happening.
All I know is that I only have 1 year pr and I am applying online in the hope that I get my citizenship before the laws change! It's a long shot, but a shot!

from change to bill and then from bill to law, refer to last change as Australian Citizenship Bill 2005, it takes over than 1.5 years,
i wander if it's against any law if immigration put all the applications received on or after 20/4/2017 on hold for "1.5 YEARS".
Yea that's what I'm hoping!!! They can't hold off for that long and some of ours will slip through!

Thx mate, let's see how it goes ...
for those applicants who lodged application on or after 20/04/2017 are very concerned about this proposed change.
Yea me too! I'm not convinced it will go through still! I think they will place it on hold! But I think it's a good thing it will let me apply!
The law isn't changed yet!!
