Thats correct under the new proposed rules.

If you don't like these rules, then follow the instructions posted above to email reps and senators to fight this bill and throw it out.

Thank you and sorry for delayed reply.

I got granted PR yesterday. If the bill doesn't get passed, what were the old/original rules of applying for citizenship after PR?

  2. We may have the opportunity to move to Geraldton for work.

    We currently live in Tasmania.

I've read so much about 'Gero' and main issues seem to be higher crime/drugs in certain areas, and reasonably isolated.

However it has to be all relative, surely. Where we currently live now is 2.5 hours to the nearest supermarket for example. There's 600 people in town. All I want is to be able to get a takeaway delivered to my house or go to Target.

People seem to love where I live now though and I don't understand it! I hate it. I do love the beach here though and 4wd and boating. So that's a tick for Geraldton too.

Of course we will visit before we commit. Suburbs to avoid? I've read Spalding and Rangeway. Good Suburbs? I've read Drummond Cove, Sunset Beach, Tarcoola Beach (?)

  3. Just to clarify -

I entered Australia in June 2015 on WHV

Partner visa 309 granted February 2016

Applied for visa 100 (PR) Dec 2016

PR expected to be granted Jan 2018 (approx)

So I wouldn't be able to apply for citizenship until 2022, correct?

  4. No you don't.

Wow, well that is extremely helpful to the OP.

Unless you can actually provide helpful advice (which I guess you can't because you don't work for free) then what's the point in even posting? 'I know the answer but I'm not going to to tell you, he he'

Definitely my bugbear of these forums!!!

  5. You sound surprised...I trust you researched the West Coast weather before moving there? When it gets too much just lie back and think of the rainforests. Rainforests need rain.

I hope your plans are progressing for the move to the brighter, drier side of the island? Although, having said that, this year since May has been the wettest and windiest weather I can remember here in the south east. It has to end soon....surely?

Unfortunately, no. I had never even been to Australia before I agreed to move here.

I realise rainforests need rain. But when it rains constantly all day every day it gets a little tiresome. I even had the heater on yesterday. I could maybe deal with the weather (I am from UK after all) but it is so isolated here too. Everything is 2+ hours away. I came with my partner for his work (he is from here) and I had the promise of a job too (which never materialised). I am desperate to move to Hobart this year!

  6. Sorry this is not entirely relevant to this thread, but it's now time for me to start putting my 100 application together after being granted the 309 in Feb. Its been ages since I applied for 309, I need refreshing, is there a checklist for things I need to include for 100? Medicals/police checks etc? All done through immiaccount like before? If someone can point me in the right direction that'd be great.

  7. Great - thank you so much for that. The schools are a huge consideration for me when choosing where to live - even though it seems far away he will be at school before we know it I'm sure!

Skani, whereabouts in Hobart are you? We currently live on the west coast buy looking at moving down the channel - Kettering, Margate, Snug etc.

Anyone got any experiences of the schools down the channel way?

  8. We are looking to buy a home around Hobart area, and although our son is only very young we are considering what schools are nearby to where we may buy a house.

For example we are looking in Kettering, to which is apparently in the catchment for Woodbridge school, even though it's closer to Snug primary (which is apparently a great school) Do you get to apply to other schools outside your catchment or do you have to go to the allocated one?

  9. So if me, my partner and son all leave Australia on a UK passport, and enter UK on our UK ones, would they have any problems returning to Australia using the UK ones? Or do you not have to return using the passport you left on? Cos surely that causes problems with immigration? It's not applicable to me as I only have UK passport anyway.

For the sale of £70 ish every 5 years I may just get him the UK one in addition to an Australian one, although it probably is a bit unnecessary

  10. Not sure if this is correct place for this.

Just wondering if there is any point applying for a UK passport for my newborn son. I am from the UK and my son was born in Australia. My partner is Australian but has both Aus/UK passports.

We are planning on visiting UK soon, my partner has always used his UK passport to enter UK but if I get my son an Australian one would he just need a tourist visa to enter?

  11. I realise that you are supposedly eligible for 100 around 2 years after applying for 309 if you are in a continuing relationship. But I did read previously this is now taking longer.

Anyone had any recent experiences and how long did it take?

If I applied for 309 in December 2014 and was granted in February 2016, when can I realistically expect to get PR?

  12. You become eligible to apply for the 100, two years after you applied for the 309. So it wouldn't instantly happen two years later anyway, not that I am trying to make excuses for the DIBP!

I know I'm being naive, but I really thought it'd be a case of 'are you still in a continuing relationship - yes - ok then'

How can it be that 309's are being granted in 6-7 months now, so entirely new scenarios that need assessing etc - but ones that have already been approved are taking over a year!

Oh well. We are at DIBP's mercy now so I just have to sit tight :-)
