  1. Well, we're six month in and loving every minute. Our journey started to appear in the UK newspapers this week, will be run in a magazine next week, And Good morning Britain want us to do a live link on the show ( but we've kindly refused) . As you can imagine some papers have "modified" our story .

made the front page off our home town paper

my fav quote was from the sun newspaper "OZ move as boy allergic to Brum"

anyway my journey started on these forums a few years back. Thanks to Pominoz members for all the advise!

  2. What jobs? Who are you applying with? Perm or contract?

Permanent roles for Architect type roles are fairly strong at the moment, and that usually indicates markets picking up. I am in Melbourne and we are recruiting as are the clients we work with. We currently have about 50 roles nationwide across security, networks, architecture, Wintel, DBA's, Mainframes, storage, ESX,CRM, and guys i know who work in IT are also recruiting in webapps and testing as well.

    Hi kevsan,

I'm looking for work now that we've settled, are any of these positions on the gold coast ?

  3.

You might have what they call a Pair Gain line we had one in SA and no way could we get broadband through the phone line We tried dial up and dongles until eventually we had an aerial installed under the government broadband guarantee as the internet we had was dreadful We then went with a local provider I don't know if the government broadband guarantee is a state or Australia wide scheme maybe make some enquiries
Ok, since my last update i have discovered that ASDL+2 is available from the local exchange, and i signed up with a company called Barefoot for an unlimited package. According to Barefoot there are no free ports at the local exchange, and telstra will not be upgrading the local exchange due to the pending NBN roll out ( IN THREE YEARS for my address!). Upon checking the telstra wholesale site it states there are 60+ ports available.I've just been into my local telstra shop and signed up for a BB package...just to see if they are just being arse's to the third party...i suspect that the local exchange is full and the wholesale site is out of date ( i hope I'm wrong). wouldn't normally be bothered but me and the wife depend on a decent connect for work ( back in the UK).
  4. Why is robina pricier? Forgive my naivety....

Robina is nice ( one of the cheaper suburbs in the south GC), and not to far from the beautiful Burleigh. Also consider Varsity, reedy creek ( both really Nice) Burleigh waters, currumbin waters or currumbin ( very sort after areas though) . PS I've not seen a "rough" suburb on the GC yet..regards of what some say.

I was out in Bonogin \ Mudgeeraba last week (which is only 15-20 mins from the beach) the houses where amazing, such a beautiful area and you'll get acreage if you wanted it.

the further south you go, the higher the prices and more in demand the houses are. This is the same for some of the northern suburbs as well like southport and labrador.

Loads of properties in Upper coomera and Helensvale, but if you want the beach life they're a bit far.

    We live in Palm beach

  5. Could the discrepancy be that ADSL is technically available in your area...but there are no vacant ports at the exchange to assign to your property....and because they are anticipating NBN to be rolled out shortly they are not willing to spend money increasing capacity at the exchange?

I'm not sure what you mean by optus and "home broadband" but Telstra, at least, should be able to offer fixed wireless broadband.

Telstra, tpg and optus can't offer fixed but dodo can .

    No idea why

  6. Hello,

We've been here a week now, managed to secure a 12 month rental in the palm beach area. Just looking into broadband options and it appears that we cannot get fixed line broadband! I've tried optus, telstra and tpg and they've stated its not possible, optus offered home broadband, which is a 4G enabled router.

is this the same for all suppliers or do different providers have different coverage areas?

seems a bit backwards, NBN hasn't started to roll out here yet either. ADSL and HFC are available according to the government site, which doesn't make sense.

  7. Wow thanks for that Rebecca!

may I ask was the visa validation holiday a requirement? (I have already been to Australia 3 times and my sister is a pr waiting for citizenship soon) bet you can't wait for August!!

    s

Depends, once your granted a visa you need to visit the country within a year from the date of either the PCC or the medical (which ever was first completed ) or you can just move before the year is up.

For example, we completed our PCC first of the two on the 25/11/14, meaning we had to enter the country to validate the visa before 25/11/15.

  8. hey everyone :)I'm just in initial research stages and looking for a guide to how much the move will cost us. Two adults, and two children. I will be main visa holder.thanks in advance (excuse my cluelessness)

Hi,everyone's circumstances are different, but here's our costs to date. Not including cost on arrival. were a family of 2 adults and 2 children.

    One way Flight £2,250.00

    Medical Fees £950.00

    pcc £90.00

    IELTS £120.00

    Visas ( 189) £4,100.00

    Skill ass £250.00

    visa validation Holiday £5,700.00

    TOTAL £13,460.00

plus shipping two dogs across has cost us just under £5000

    Hope that helps

  11. With Rental Guardians. I had to complete an online form and at the end I certified to say that I would be renting unseen. I also submitted a detailed statement with pictures of my house in the UK and photos of my cats! Did the trick. Every other estate agent would not consider it. I know that people say that it is very risky, but you can minimise the risk with the right research and tbh we aren't precious about the quality of fixtures as long as it is in the correct location.

Thanks Peachy, i'll look into it!

  12. Thanks so much very helpful.

When you say not beach weather are you sure it wouldn't feel like beach weather to us coming from UK?

Want to stay in big 4 campsites so kids can go in pools. Warm enough for that?

We went to the gold Coast in October last year, it felt like summer everyday. We were in the pool , Sea and Creeks everyday!

  13. Hi all,

Who would you recommend as the best dog transport company from the UK to Australia? I know there is Pet Air but am not really sure of any others.

Our dogs are our life and so I really want everything to go smoothly and as stress free for the animals as possible.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

I'm using Golden arrow to transfer our Jack Russell and Chihuahua this august. I got quotes from 4 companies, but found Golden arrow to have the most personal approach and they seemed the most trustworthy.

A Big bonus they were also the cheapest.

  14. Hi Everyone,

Me and the family are looking at moving to the Goldcoast (or surrounding area) in November this year. Our visa is already sorted and we have been to the goldcoast before. We have two children 5 and 3 but in all honesty we'd like some help in choosing a location preferable a nice area with reasonable schools. I know that sounds silly but in all honesty we're just not to sure whether there are 'nice areas' or 'run down' areas.

I'm a practising structural engineer. I've applied for jobs here in the UK and never hear anything, so we're going to take a bit of a gamble and just come out and try our luck. Again any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Gareth and Bev

On my last visit i searched for the "not so nice" areas and didn't find any....i imagine they exist. Here in Birmingham i could direct you to plenty of such areas.

Anyway, best of luck were moving out to GC in August with no jobs

  15. We were in Noosa recently and stayed in an Airbnb in Tewantin, although quiet it was really something. We also went to Mooloolaba and had a great time, as its a little more active than Noosa and seemed to have more going on.

    Thanks

  16. In Noosaville two years and quite happy............take a walk up the National Park on the right from Main Beach Noosa and watch the Surfers, head out to Boiing Pot look out and further if you like. Drive down the end of Hastings St and through the National Park to the Spit at the River mouth beautiful views......... never tire of it

Little Cove is lovely also for a swim. Was going to stay here but did not have the chance seems to have great reviews and handy to the River in Noosaville and close to everything - - Montpellier Boutique Resort.........looks good fro kids.....Gastons near the roundabout in Noosa is nice plenty of choice really. Like Moneypennys also at the end of Hastings st. Coolum is worth a stop also to have a look around...............Buderim is also nice...............Maleny lovely, a bit more inland but worth a visit

thanks skippy1, lots their to digest....i suddenly feel the need to make a list :twitcy:

  17. Hi

I work in Noosa and live a few minutes from Mooloolaba - Noosa is a great place for the family, hastings street is fantastic, and also gympie terrace area in noosaville .....with any accommodation, you are now going into low season, so try to book direct with the place your going to stay and try to be polite and ask for a deal, pushing a deal too much might get you the rock bottom room, so be fair, and being aware low season, and there is plenty to choose from, will help with any booking.

agree for kids, to see auzzie zoo....but if your not staying in noosa, do drive up the sea road ( david low way) and see all the beaches as you drive up....i do it every day and still after 4 years its a like being on holiday the drive is fantastic

who every said Noosa on the beach - thank you - I will mention it to the manager

Thanks Jamesparry...I'll definitely drive up the Sea road!

  18. We stayed at "On The Beach" on Hastings St Noosa for a special birthday. Highly recommend it from when we stayed.

Otherwise plenty of nice places in the Hinterland, Montville etc.

Sorry just seen you have children, not sure if the Noosa place would suit.

our son stayed in Mooloolaba with his 2 children in a ground floor 2 bed flat, walk through to the beach, heated pool, The Beachcomber on the spit. 70 Parkyn Parade. They loved it, short walk into Mooloolaba proper, or to the Spit.

Underwater World minutes away, obviously recommend Australia Zoo.

    Hope that helps

    Thanks Ramot
