How many genuine asylum seekers - by definition?

Regrettably and tragically, asylum seeker from Iran, Reza Barati, was killed in a riot on Manus Island detention centre. As translated by a family friend, Reza was seeking asylum because ''All he wanted was to have a better life - he was an intelligent young man with productive years ahead of him and he would have been good for the Australian economy.''

By definition, asylum seekers do not have a home, and can't live in their own country because they are not safe. They should not be here for "a better life" or to contribute to the economy! Family friend said ''Reza was not a political refugee – he was a social refugee.'' Just how does "social refugee" fit into the category of being officially a refugee? Reza was the eldest of his siblings, who had trained as an architect, had particular responsibilities to his family. No doubt once he achieved a "better life" and job in Australia, he would unite with his family in Australia!

At the weekend, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison released a statement saying that new information suggests the fatal head injury sustained by Mr Berati, along with much of the violence that night, occurred inside the detention centre's perimeter.

It appears the attack that led to Mr Barati's death, and injuries to more than 60 asylum seekers, was an orchestrated response to a rolling protest that involved asylum seekers chanting ''F--k PNG'' and baring their buttocks. A Papua New Guinean police spokesman has told Fairfax Media that 23-year-old Reza Barati was killed by multiple blows to the head, probably from a piece of timber.

Iranians gain relatively painless entry to Indonesia, with the Middle Eastern country on the list of those whose nationals are able to acquire a visa on arrival. That has meant that Iranians ultimately seeking to arrive in Australia by boat are able to conduct the stretch of the journey as far as Indonesia without legal difficulty. After leaving Iran, many head to Dubai, make their way to Bali or Java before making the final journey south. The death is tragic, and Berati's murderer needs to be brought to justice. However, the justification that he was "fleeing from persecution", terror, torture, and was unable to live in Iran have been exaggerated. How many other asylum seekers are really "social asylum seekers" trying to get a "better life"- something that we all in Australia are all trying to do - in the face of massive legal immigration!

There has to be a better system than detention centres and imprisonment. Australia has the second largest acceptance of per capita in the world of humanitarian refugees.

We should remove our signature from the UN Refugee Convention, and decide off-shore the refugee we will accept into Australia, and the rest can then be considered illegal entrants. This would remove the impetus of detention centres, and exaggerated claims, public outcries, people smugglers, the lure of believing that Australia has got a '"better life" on offer, and the frustration and the political foot-ball asylum seekers have become.

Vunerable? you mean scrounging que jumpers, who actually pay for the trip thousands of dollars?

Anyway, the nastier Australia's policies, the less attractive Australia will become. Why would any rational person want to come to a Nazi state like Abbott's Australia?

Maybe it is cheaper and less strenuous to qualify for PR in NZ? Once a NZ citizen they have reciprocal rights in Australia. Perhaps that is the reason? It all depends on what your visa entry class was I suppose. For me, on a 457, I would have to prove two years of employment/residence in one regional area, and then fork out a shed load of cash to get PR status.

New Zealand residency does not allow you to live in Australia..New Zealand citizenship does.

But Australian residency does allow you to live in New Zealand, and become a permanent resident there after

spending 2 years in country..

Most asylum seekers that become refugees are very hard workers. Many are often better educated than the workers this country imports by the shed full. They are generally anything but free loaders. In fact their get up and go will add greatly to this nation's gene pool in time.

Mate I earn between 80 and 100k I rent have four cars one fur child and just bought some land to do a land and home build and I can easy afford this with savings in the bank of around 10k and pay 39% on EVERY $$ I earn as I never chaged the tax bracket what are you speading your money on? Something isn't right to me.

39% tax on 80 -100k per year..Something wrong there mate...I earned 125k last tax year and paid 26% tax in total...Would get an accountant if I was you..

And 79days with no rain...who would want to endure that...Two years was enough for me in the relentless sun of WA...Now live in beautiful cool,rainy Tasmania, and the best move I ever made..

Oh and one more thing..There is alot more to tasmania than Hobart and Launie where most people seem to gravitate too...I live in NW Tassie and its quiet, beautiful and best of all not many people..

Tasmania as far as Im concerned is the only place to be in Australia...Its behind the times, un-crowded and absolutely beautiful..If you want a peacefull life in a chaotic world Tasmania could well be the place to be..as it is for me.

Tasmania is 30 years "behind the times" and thats why I live there and love it..

Why did you leave the UK??...Was one reason to escape mass uncontrolled immigration?...England started off like Australia and progressed into plagues of migrants from overseas entering the country..Most of whom do not fit in with British culture or its people..I for one dont want to see Australia become a multicultural hell hole, as it doesnt work and never will..It will only oneday lead to unrest and civil wars, like what is happening now the world over..Unemployment is increasing in Australia, so is the answer to allow more immigrants in, which will increase it further..Uncontrolled immigration leads to lower wages and unemployment, so who in the right frame of mind would want it??

No they dont..I live in Tasmania and there is no MOT or an equivalant to an MOT..

This lady made the right choice..Tasmania is the place,,,hopefully we wont have droves moving here..will be nice to keep it as a nice quiet island away from the chaos of the world..
