  1. We move to Perth in June too. Just starting the ball rolling with getting quotes for shipping. Don't know who to go with and whether 20' container would be enough...
  2. Sorry to hear this. Just starting my quotes for shipping, so would also appreciate knowing the name of this company, thanks.
  3. Is the pet insurance for more than one pet? We'll be bringing two cats over. Do you find the pool expensive to run/maintain?
  4. Thank you, that's really helpful. Is that with any kids or is that food for two?

    Taking cats

The older ones are 11 and 14, but both don't cope well with being kept indoors. They're not the most chilled of cats and the older one is a very territorial male that would potentially cause issues in the neighbourhood. It's nowhere near an easy decision, it has broken my heart, but is for the better of them and they have a wonderful new home to go to of someone they already know.
  6. Hi Pom Queen, thanks for the reply. I didn't know about the perth poms page I will join that now:) I'm always changing our insurance every year and other utilities for the best deal so I'm used to shopping around. Do you have any recommendations for health insurance?
  7. Hi, we will be moving to Perth by the end of January. Obviously we have done a lot of research, but I wondered if you lovely lot could give some guidance on the current cost of living out there. What utilities can we be expecting to pay for a 3 bedroom house (approx. area: Jandakot/surrounding suburbs) ? How does it work with car insurance, does your no claims bonus from the UK count for anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tia.

    Taking cats

We've decided that we are taking two of our cats, the older ones won't cope and it would be selfish of us to put them through it, but the younger two have had their rabies vaccine yesterday so I've started the ball rolling... We're in a difficult situation that my husband will potentially need to start his job mid January and therefore the two we are taking will have to go into a foster home until beg. of May until they are allowed to fly:( At least by that time we will have found a suitable rental and can provide a cat friendly area for them.
  9. Yes I noticed some are really strict, literally just road names
  10. Yes the holiday let bit isn't a problem it's our short bracket of time with getting over there and sourcing a school that we like in time for them starting the new term two weeks later. Nothing is ever easy though:)
  11. Blimey that's expensive! Is that North Coogee? I've heard that part is more affluent. If it was just me and hubby then it would be a lot simpler to pick a suburb and go with it, but I have to consider catchment areas, etc. It's a minefield!
  12. Hi all, My previous post seems to have disappeared when the website went down earlier today... So the job my husband has been offered is based by Jandakot Airport (we are currently in the UK), but we'd ideally like to live closer to the coast and was looking at Coogee. Does anyone on here live around there or have any advice on what the area is like? We have three primary school age children to get settled and with having to get over there by mid January and getting them into a school to start the new year in February for a school and area that I know nothing about is really worrying me. I know I can google schools and look on their websites, but hearing first hand what you guys think of certain areas (good or bad) would be really helpful. I was hoping to be in a position that we could get over there and have time for the kids to adapt and look round to see where we like and visit schools to get a feel for them, but no such luck. What have you guys done when you've been thrown into it? I can't just point at an area on google maps and go yep that'll do! Help...

    Taking cats

Thanks for your replies. I've read about certain areas being strict, but our cats are already neutered, chipped and vaccinated, so that's half the battle. We're looking at Brisbane area, but awaiting news on work currently so difficult to specify where we'd end up, but I'm hoping for North Brisbane, but not too rural.

    Taking cats

Hi all, Has anyone taken their cats over with them?
  15. Hi Jon, I don't talk like that:tongue: Thanks for the offer, but he's office based. He manages a team of CAD Techs. Can't imagine him being a manual worker, haha! But I will ask him... Thanks Jo
  16. Hi I'm new to the site. My husband and I with our three small children are looking at moving over in the next two years. My husband is a CAD Manager for a timber frame housing company so was hoping to get sponsored. He was head hunted last year for a position in Perth but it wasn't right for us, so just hoping we get another opportunity but in Brisbane. I've been researching different areas that are family friendly but until we actually get over there it's like a needle in a haystack. Just wondered if anyone could offer any advice of where they have moved to and what it's like for schooling, etc. Are the state schools okay? Don't think we'd be in a position to afford private. Is Gold Coast nicer than the Sunshine Coast? Our biggest dilemma is of course leaving family behind and taking the kids away from their grandparents. How have people coped with this? Looking forward to hearing from you lovely people:) Jo xx
  17. Hi, I'm new to the site. My husband has been pretty much offered a job as a CAD Manager in Perth. It's always been our dream to move to Oz after travelling there 10 years ago. However, they want someone to start the job ASAP and it's all too much. After doing lots of research, it appears that the cost of living has changed a lot since we were there and although he would be getting a good wage, it would be about us leaving everything behind to live the dream. But that won't happen if his wages aren't gonna go very far, as what I'm reading suggests that Perth is very expensive. So, the question is...should we get ourselves sorted out over the next 12 months but look for work in Brisbane? My brother lives in Hervey Bay, but we didn't get to see the east coast past Sydney so don't know what it's like. It isn't an option to suck it and see, he will need a job to go to as we don't have the capital to take the risk and just go. Any help would be greatly appreciated:) Jo
