  1. I heard the reason why they dropped the price is because Netflix is making a move into Australia.

Wowsers hope so, cos in answer to one of the prev comments...I did get Foxtel, and its pants! Secondly I moved to Ipswich to live with my sister and her family, and its really a nice suburb that we are in. I love one or two channels from the UK, i.e. BBC I player and 4 od, do they have those on Netflix??

  2. A good website that details all the options is http://www.eyeondemand.com/

Streaming over VPN is usually poor quality due to the distance from the UK. Smart DNS mentioned above is much better and you could use Filmon via that service. I'd suggest that you bring over a Now TV box from the UK which will give you iPlayer, BBC News, 4oD, Demand5. It's only 10 quid and Smart DNS will cost about $12 a quarter.

    Hey Mark,

can you let me know if you have a NOW TV box and does it work over here...how did you get it going?

    thanks

  3. I sat mine at Manchester...it was fine. Lots of people organised into different classrooms. Very well organised which helped me relax, and i was chatting to a couple of people who were also sitting the tests and that was nice and helped my nerves too.

Take snacks in your bag and a good book cos there might be a gap between your written, reading listening tests and the speaking test. Good luck and try not to be too nervous its not all as scary as i'd led myself to believe!

  4. Simone Braverman - Ace the IELTS I think its called...google her name and you can pay for the e book online and also a great practice marking service. I used it and felt so much more confident when I arrived for the exam...take a look and see what you think

    Good Luck!

p.s dont be scared by it, I heard loads of scary stories before hand which were'nt helpful to be honest.

  5. Hi Tina and Dannii and anyone who's going to brisbane and the Gold Coast area

Im so pleased with the responses and would like to keep in touch especially when we've landed and starting our new adventure. I like company and keeping busy so making new friends will be very important to me :)

Thanks Quoll, we're not burning any bridges and will be renting the house out. I also feel like taking a break from hairdressing and trying something different. I'm an outdoor person who loves swimming and keeping fit. Nothing is forever so taking one day at a time and trying not to over think things is the way forward.

    Hiya Elven,

We are in the same boat too, we are flying out to Brisbane two weeks on MondaY !!! We are all really excited and nervous but are so busy trying to get the house sale completed and finishing packing up that it all feels surreal!

We will be settling in Ipswich (crumbs its a small world really eh!) which i think you mentioned your brother in law lives there...We like it its near enough to most things we need and its where my sister and family are living so initially seemed a sensible place to land! We'll be living in Easter Heights or Flinders view - 2 lovely leafy subburbs

I too am very sociable and love a good get together so please add me to your get together list and PM with any questions or dates for drinks!!

Keep smiling.... thats what Ive found to be the best solution, along with a little bit of chocolate, the occasional glass of wine and a well organised list!!:laugh: x

  6. Im sorry if i upset any parents with my comments...Im sure its okay to express my opinion on here..I hope so..I dont have any kids and never want any..so dont like them much or their noise..so was only expressing my opinion that parents as Im sure most do should consider other passengers peace and quiet on a long flight..

Unfortunately you did upset several people with your comments I fully appreciate your views but I think you really need to be aware of how aweful you sound when posting in such an aggressive way.

It often takes people courage to post a question and to recieve comments such as yours is not only unhelpful but may stop others from posting questions at all, which I'm certain goes against everything this forum stands for...I dont want to sound patronising but perhaps a little more thought next time!

  7. Hi all, we are returning to Aus in the new year with a 6 month old, I wondered if anyone else has travelled to Aus with a 6 month old? Did you take a stop over? Do you have any advice? It's hard enough flying but I'm petrified with having the baby too!!

    Thanks for your advice :-)

Ive just spotted your thread (and after getting really cross with certain unhelpful comments) I wanted to offer a top tip that might already have been suggested, but I found feeding my son as we were literally taking off made a lot of difference as the suckling action helped his ears naturally adjust to the change in pressure. Also the flight crews that I have seen recently have been brilliant in supporting young families so I'm sure they are well trained in this.

I have flown many times with my children as infants (who btw are now 14 and 16) and found calm mum who ignored unhelpful others really made most difference ;)

  8. I can't believe some of the comments on this thread (from someone I won't name but you all know who I mean!). I am more disgusted by the person perving on the breastfeeding mother than I am on the fact they are breastfeeding (this doesn't disgust me, I breastfed all my babies), which is an entirely natural thing, best for baby and mum, encourages bonding, passes along vital antibodies, allows baby to be skin to skin with mum - something some mums seem to forget after about the first month or so, baby needs skin to skin contact. Anyway, lecture over

I hope at least one of you is on the same flight as me as I will suffering from missing my grandson and the little boy next door, who calls me aunty and I've looked after since he was born. So, if you see me on the flight, need some peace and quiet and want a faux grandma for LO on the flight, I'm your woman

Or me too...lol I agree completely. some people make me so mad too...x

  9. I tell you what is funny..why SELFISH parents assume other passangers on the flight who dont have kids

want to listen to your screeching brats..What happened to consideration for others..There isnt any anymore thats what...Its the ME culture as long as Im okay thats all that matters, and your screeching brats will turn out the same way..selfish...Put a dummy in it, thats what parents always used to do when we used to live in a less selfish greed driven world..

Sad, mean individual!...its a really simple rule of life...if you have nothing to say thats nice/helpful/useful or even slightly interesting , don't say anything at all.....why do you bother posting?

If its merely to get a reaction.....well i 'm sorry but its pathetic!

  10. Thankyou for the info thats really good to know.

Its a similar situation here at the mo with train travel. If you book a direct train from say Blackpool to London Euston its about £120 return (cheaper on the internet of course) but if you buy split tickets for the journey i.e Blackpool to wigan and wigan to london Euston it costs £55 and you stay on the same train?!!! Might be handy to know if you fancy a train trip :)

  11. Any tips?

    Any do's & don'ts?

Do we each need to bring our Korans with us?

Has anything changed that we need to know about?

Will Nigel Farage be at the border checking that we're white anglo saxons before allowing us in?

What's the goss? Are Ant & Dec still alive? If so, why?

I hear there is some sort of footy comp going on in June that might rival the mighty AFL

All of the above may happen/ have happened......enjoy your trip

  12. We are paying $1174 return with Malaysian Air, leaving on the 10th of June to Dublin, and returning on the 5th of July. Price would have been a lot more if we came back after that date, or if we flew into a UK airport. Even taking ferry fares from Dublin to Holyhead into consideration, it is far cheaper. Car hire is costing us $559 for a compact for 20 days.

That's cheap, is that return air fares each or both together?

  13. Hi All,

Our move cube is floating across the ocean as we speak, but I have still got a little too much to take with us. Two suitcases approx 40kg extra in total.

    I suppose we have two options;

    • pay excess luggage costs at airport? (Malaysian Airlines)
    • or send them seperately first to arrive in a few weeks?

Any recommendations of companies to send two cases?

Anybody got any experiences of either please?

    Thankyou

  14. Hi All

Move cube coming in a week! How did you pack your furniture such as couch, armchair? Did you buy furniture covers? If so where from eg. Amazon? Plastic or? Or would some old sheets be okay? What did you use to stop things going mildew?

    Many thanks

Hi i have just filled and sent a move cube last week i didnt send any furniture..but they supply furniture covers if you ask them. I only packed boxes and tbh it was like the hardest puzzle ever getting everything in it! However the nan who delivered it helped and was superb...he explained that the cube stays exactly as you pack it until it arrives at australian customs and they decide to look through your itinery and checks....

  15. What a load of rubbish. There is no uncertainty or need to pay devils advocate in the matter of whether somebody needs to declare income or not. It is crystal clear. And as explained, not declaring rental income but then transferring over the proceeds of a house later will, without a shadow of a doubt, come to the attention of the ATO. I don't know why so many people, who are probably honest in every other way become so dishonest about matters of tax.

Anyway, situation of the OP is very straightforward and clear. The net income is declared on both tax returns and any tax paid in UK will be deducted from the bill in Australia.

Sorry I should have been clearer, when I said uncertainty, I was meaning that Tax is an area where I have no knowledge so I wouldn't be certain about the same things the OP was unclear about!

As I said, albeit in very poor taste I was only being mischievous and playing devils advocate...I am a very honest tax paying individual who, as I also stated, would enlist the services of an expert in these matters. I have a financial advisor here in the uk and will certainly be getting one in OZ, not for any other reason than I know nothing about this topic....so perhaps I should have been quite and not been mischeivous, note to self....don't get involved!

  16. Of course it's dishonest to not declare income you're required to declare on an Australian tax return. For a start, you'll be lying when you declare that your return is complete and correct.

There are two potential issues - how do you explain regular payments arriving from overseas? Banks talk to the ATO so the foreign income can't necessarily be kept a secret.

And you could never, ever bring the capital over, if you've never declared the asset. What if you want to sell the property and want the proceeds over here? How do you explain a sudden windfall of cash?

I agree...was playing devils advocate/thinking out loud. Tax is always an area of uncertainty i would say speak to a financial advisor who knows about uk assests as well as australia xxx

  17. Just dont tell them..They target the honest didnt you know??

This was my thinking...how will they know if you dont declare it...im mot sure if thats dishonest or not? As you mentioned youll be paying tax on your income from rent in uk so if you dont mention it in oz you wont be liable for both im guessing?? Im certainly not an expert ....anybody elses thought?? Am i suggesting something that can get them into trouble??
