Possibly same reason. Wife is looking at a job there. Currently live in Point Cook so used to a commute. And coming from London originally, a long commute doesn't bother me!

Thanks mate, interesting I work in South Yarra, do you train it to work or drive ? Was planning on the train as I know how bad the traffic is.

Hi there, Can anyone recommend suburbs in Geelong that are good for families, close to a town centre and with good rail access to Melbourne ? Thanks

Hi there, we are a family of 3, been in Oz for 6 months since our move from the UK. Myself and my wife are early to mid 30's and our daughter is 6. We have been living in Elwood since our arrival, but since finding our feet and bearings, have realised how expensive the rent here is in Elwood, along with it being a very upmarket (and snobby) suburb. We are down to earth, hard working people and cannot stand the cliques here, especially at the school. Status is the most important factor here and we just arent those kind of people. The majority of parents/families we have met so far in Elwood are also older than us, early to mid 40's seems to be the norm. We have friends who live in Point Cook and were extremely shocked when we saw the rental prices compared to what we are paying in Elwood. Not only can we get a bigger property in and around PC, but we can save in the region of $1000 per month on rent. Be interested to maybe meet up with any ex pats living in PC, or younger Australian families, to help broaden our social circles. Look forward to hearing from anybody !

Hi Rupert I spoke to my creditors as a courtesy to advise I can't afford repayments. I could have ran away and not said a word, but that's not my style. I also advised all creditors before I left the UK. Again as courtesy and because I had every intention of maintaining repayments. I asked them if they could freeze my accounts for a few months, by the time my wife will hopefully be in work. This doesn't appear to be an option. I don't have any other ideas at present, hence the bankruptcy idea. Believe me it's not something I want to do, but short of options at the moment. I don't even know if it's possible to do from here and if it will affect me anyway here in Australia

Hi there I have been in Australia for several months on a 457 visa. I left behind several debts in the UK, credit cards , overdraft etc and I had every intention of continuing to pay these debts off from Australia. Unfortunately it's been easier said than done and despite earning good money here, I haven't had the disposable income I had hoped and have been unable to keep up with repayments. Ive never defaulted on payments before and feel genuine guilt and worry over my situation. I've tried communicating with creditors back in the UK and they really don't want to help and recommend I go to a debt management company. This is is no good to me as I simply don't have the funds to be able to pay anything at this moment in time but hopeful my situation will improve in the coming months. I was wondering if anyone here can offer advice ? Can I apply for bankruptcy in the UK from Australia ? Would it have any implications for my new life in Australia in terms of my visa status and the chances of obtaining permanent residency in the future ? I am not a person to run away from my debts but at the moment I don't feel I have an alternative.

Ive done just that !!

Good Afternoon All, I have recently arrived in Melbourne with my wife and daughter on 457 visas, through my company. My wife is keen to get back into work within the childcare field. Where does she start ?! She has the various UK qualifications, the UK police checks etc, are these transferable in Australia ? If some one can point us in the right direction, we'd be very grateful. Thanks

Over 5 weeks since applying, the sponsorship and nomination have been approved, just awaiting my visa application now. Further information requested earlier this week and submitted, so hopefully on the home stretch now. Under what grounds can they reject a 457 ??!! -
Congratulations, it seems there are varying timescales for everyone.
-
Hi Jesh I believe the Sponsorship side of things is the lengthy one so I imagine the rest will follow fairly quickly. Did you submit the nomination and application at the same time as the Sponsorship ?
-
Hi Benny Is that just the company sponsorship side of the application and where was the application lodged ?
-
We didn't apply 3 months ago, we applied 1 month ago, but the preparation for the application took ages, such was the amount of information required for the sponsorship side of things.
-
Hi Bobby I am also the first person my company has sponsored, so a bit of a learning curve for all parties. I got offered the job over 3 months ago and they wanted me out there by Easter !! The waiting is indeed torture, it is like your whole life is on hold. Fingers crossed for both of us !
-
Hi there, I share your pain ! It has been just over 4 weeks since my application went in and that was Sponsorship/Nomination/Application all together. DIAC keep coming back and asking for additional information on all 3 aspects. We have today sent off the remaining outstanding info they required and fingers crossed that will be the last of it and approval will follow fairly soon. There doesn't appear to be a set timescale and all depends on your company status, EG have they already been approved as sponsors. Mine haven't hence the long wait. Our MA said from the outset 4-6 weeks maximum and its certainly looking that way. Good luck !

Hi Penny, you've been waiting since Feb for a 457 ? Shouldn't take that long from what I've heard..
