  1. Hello My family and I have just been granted our PR. We have been on 457 visa for the past 2 1/2 years. We were hoping we could get some help with what we need to change now we have our PR. i.e driving licence, medicare etc. Plus any other information that may help us along the way. Thanks Jo :cool::cool:
  2. Hello Its almost like i have written this. My emotions swing back and forth daily. We moved to toowoomba almost three years ago. My husband works in renal at the local hospital. We have a 15 year old daughter. We have a great lifestyle our daughter has a great education. I cannot 100% enjoy it as i am not sharing it with all the people i love the most. I too feel soo guilty for moving so far away. Ita tough not seeing nieces and nephews grow up. We miss our family immensely. I even find it tough calling them or skyping as we all leave the conversations feeling sad. We have a better life in australia. We are currently building a new home have met wonderful people also who invite us for christmas but as you mentioned it does not feel like christmas and is not celebrated like back home. If you ever feel like a chat please message me . Its a horrible feeling Jo
  3. Im a little confused and would love some help. My family and I are currently living in Toowoomba on 457 visas with reciprocal health care, however we are looking to take out a Health insurance policy to cover our dental etc. When I looked online I noticed that lots of sites offer 457 only heath policies. Now that we are here and are residents from a tax point of view do we have to take this policy or can we look at the taking out a normal one. The 457 oversea visitor ones seem to be a lot more expensive. I thought I would ask before I did myself out of pocket.:wub:
  4. We are with the cumberland building society, they have been really helpful. My mum and dad live next door so the repairs and management will stay with them. We are letting £50per month build in an account incase anything happens. we were really lucky with the tennants, they are self employed and cannot get a mortgage of their own for three years, so they have leased our home for a mimimum of two years. Landlord insurance I plan on paying up front to save on the interest. I have a quote for £207. And as for the management it came to a total of £250 for the advertising, sign, contracts , collection of rent. Let me know if I can be off anymore help
  5. Well following on from my initial post, we have successfully been allowed to let out our property without changing to a BLT mortgage and having to pay hefty fees for getting out of our fixed one that we are currently in. The building society have been very helpful indeed and helped us as much as possible. Initially I had thought not to tell them, but I didn't want to be worrying that something may go wrong while I was away. We are increasing our mortgage to 21 years while we are away to reduce the monthly payments and we also now have lovely tenants ready to move in for the duration. I'm so glad I was upfront as it has worked out so well.
  6. Hi Gary My husband, daughter age 13 and myself are moving to Toowoomba in six weeks time, we are also making the move from Scotland so any help that I can be regarding the move just drop me a message. jo
  7. Hi Just an update on our quotes, we got 4 quotes in from different companies all around the £5500 mark, we have managed to get one of the companies down to £4500 inc aqis. Amazing what a bit of haggling can do!!
  8. Hello We are in the initial stages of gathering quotes for shipping and I have been surprised by the cost! We live in Dumfriesshire, Scotland and a quote from here to Toowoomba came in at £5500 for a 20ft container including aqis. We have had quotes of Doree Bonner, Anglo Pacific and crown, they all seem to be coming in the same. Has anyone had any experience where they have managed to get these costs down and what kind of margin can I expect them to reduce it by if they do.
  9. Hi there I called my lender on Friday and they have advised that they haven't had this situation before, where someone has gone to Australia for a couple of years. They have advised me they will let me know by the end of the week. So I will keep you posted/
  10. My husband has been granted a 457 visa for the family for four years, he is a renal nurse and has a position in one of the local hospitals, they are providing us accomodation and car hire for one month until we get on our feet, but it has happended very quickly. we couldnt afford to move and have to pay the expense of the mortgage over here, so fingers crossed our lender will be ok with everything and I will def take your advise regarding how long we intend to be out of the country (2yrs). I will keep you posted and let you know what happens:biggrin:
  11. hello We are moving to Toowoomba in about 3 mths time, my daughter who will be 13 has some reservations and would to here from other girls that have moved over there that she could chat to about the area and what there is to do.
  12. Hello All I know there is a lot of posts on here regarding mortgages, however i really could do with as much advise on this as possible. We are intending to meet with our current mortgage lender ( Cumberland Building Society) to ask to change to a buy to let mortgage. ...so here are my questions. 1. If I advise we a moving to OZ ( my husband has secured a nursing position) what are the chances of them saying yes we can change to a buy to let. I noticed rom a lots of posts it very much depends on the lender, however i could do with any advise you can all give me so i can go a prepared as possible . We currently have 50% equity in the house , roughly £75000, however I would also like to take some additional out on the mortgage (£10000) and perhaps extend the life of the mortgage from 13 years to 20 years. has anyone had a similar experience.
  13. Hi there, your story seems so similar to mine, we are also planning the move for the end of the year, we have never been to australia and have no family, although we have travelled lots. My husband is a nurse and would this as always been his dream, I too have agreed with husband that we will be staying for 2-3yrs max and as you mentioned this has settled both our daughter and me. We have strong family ties at home and my daughter does not want to leave friends and family, it is too hard for her to visualise how she will keep in touch, at 12 its hard to reason anything logically!!. I do think it will be a great move for us in the short term and give our daughter a different perspective on life, culture and the world rather than if she stays in the small village we have both lived in since we were born......she still hates us both this morning!! I will keep in touch and let you know how things are going
  14. hi there this is my first post and i really could do with some help. my husband, myself and our 12yr old daughter are looking to move to Oz later this year. The only problem is she is hating the idea. I could really do with hearing from other people who have been in the same situation and how they have made the move easier for them. What I have been trying so far doesnt seem to be working. thanks jo xx
