  1. Good on ya!!!

Is too proofs of address really necessary or just one?

Did you apply for you TFN before or after you arrived in Australia. If after, how long did it take for them to send it to you?

    Thanks

Actually they check the combination of required proofs ..check link:

I applied for my TFN online after arriving in Australia...It took 1 week before I got my TFN letter from WA government...:)

    Cheers

  2. Thanks very much Mushahid, really helpful :notworthy:

You say about a VEVO printout - is this the grant letter that you receive when the visa is granted?

Are you using your short term rental address as the proof of address? Is this OK until you have a long term rental address?

    Thanks Lorraine

    Hi

Yeah...It is the grant letter they ask if Visa is not evidenced in the passports...:)

Yes, I used the short term address , the short term address works as well..as long as you have had mail sent to that address and also bank statements are showing the same address...They wont ask or enquire about renting/leasing/owned properties....etc...As far as I know..they would want the address to post the Driving License card to you ....

    Cheers

  4. So you are asking us whether you should be wasting the best years of your life doing a PhD in Perth or improving your career (the real way through work rather than study) in the greatest city in the world?

PhD's are a collosal waste of time in my opinion (unless you're going into academia) and doing one in Perth of all places would be a recipe for sending the most sane person over the edge, unless you have an extremely high boredom threshold.

I think you would be mad to opt for the former, but up to you.

    Thanks..

Like you very frank way of putting things as they r...:)..I might go to US for a couple of years and come back to Perth...:)....Lets see how things finalise.:)

    Cheers

  5. I love NY, but the salary is low and it is just a temporary visa. Do you have a permanent visa for Australia? Maybe you could do the NY thing for a couple of years for the experience and then come back to Perth.

I think it is a NY vs Australia thing, I wouldn't let PHD come into it, if you got onto the course once I guess you could do that again. I also think phd are not that meaningful other than for academics, for the rest it is just for show off really.

    Thanks....

My Australia Visa is PR ....so I could go to US for couple of years and come back and complete my PhD...Keeping aside salary as Salary is v low...But yeah you r ryt......I could give NY a try for experience...

    Cheers

  6. After a stressful two weeks they have finally paid for our flights, even though the company has an account with Emirates they have booked us on the cheapest flight possible, Its a company called "JetAirway". The 1st flight is via Qantas to Singapore, then on two JetAirway planes to Mumbai then London. Never thought Id ever be heading to Mumbai, Total traveling time of 40.5Hours. You cant even check in online with them as the 1st flight is a Qantas plane but the booking reference is a JetAirways number.

Has anybody flown with JetAirways, Also Im bringing my TV back with me and randomly my cats scratch post, well its a shape of a oil barrel covered in carpet and with 2 holes cut in it, Thing is we bought it for $200 and its only 2-3 weeks so were bringing it back with us.

Do you know how easy it is to get these stuff added to your luggage. I would call Jetairways but they don't work weekends.

I am so sorry for your experience .

I have had similar experience with Horrible bosses...Swore never to work with stupid people again ...Unless the pay package was in Millions !!

I have flown Jet Airways. They are a pretty decent Airlines and are like a luxury Indian Airliner .

    Good service...overall. Decent Staff...

Jet Airways has very good safety record.

  7. You could apply for PhD in New York as well, can`t you? 70 - 80 thousand a year isn`t a lot, especially in the Northeast, is your wife gonna be working too? I would think about where I want to be geographically. Job and study opportunities will be found in either place if you seek it IMO. Good luck :wubclub:

Well..Perth PhD is free...No Fees and there is an option of Funding and teaching...:)

New York PhD will maybe cost me if I dont find Scholarship or funding...

Wife will probably not work..so its just me...working in NY..

    Lets see.

  8. Its been nearly 3 weeks in Perth...

    Medicare card ( OK)

    Bank Account ( OK)

    TFN ( OK)

WA Driving License ( X) -Next week maybe!!

The things which happened in 2 weeks after arrival :

1 ) Got offers for PhD from Curtin University- Engineering Departments - Civil and Energy Sciences !!

This is a chance of a lifetime to become a Doctor- as in PhD degree holder....

2 ) I have also got Job Offer from New York -Building & Energy Company . But , Salary is not too great, 70-80 K per year .

H1B Visa interview at US consulate is in June .

    The dilemma:

Do I stay in Perth and complete the PhD and get my Doctorate and settle down in Perth

    OR

Do I travel to New York and Work in my field , Earn Money and Enjoy!!!!

All my friends say New York is the obvious choice as it is the best place on Earth!!!...

Family and teachers say , Doctorate is a life long achievement...Stay put in Perth !!!

    DECISIONS!!! DECISIONS !!! DECISIONS!!!!

    Need sane advice only!!!!

  9. Hi All

Shifted to the new place near Karawara , Curtin University . Lovely place .

Got Medicare enrolled and registered , a slip with Medicare Number was given . Medicare Cards will be posted in 3 weeks .

Found out that Medicare covers partial payments of Doctors bill . Doesn't cover Ambulance costs which could be over 800 dollars . Specialist costs will be covered partially . Not very good this Medicare .

Went to BUPA Australia and will be taking full cover Health Insurance from them , which I know will be Useful in Perth and Western Australia, considering the high rates for everything in WA.

Received Debit Card - chip and pin from NAB .

    Weather :

Temperature today was ok at 34 deg C compared to 40 deg C Yesterday.

    Address:

MEDICARE HEAD OFFICE- PERTH CBD ( BUPA office is just 2 doors away)

    81 St Georges Terrace

    Perth WA

  10. Mushahid are you sure that $750 is for the whole month? I saw the Oasis website and the prices are around 300 per night?

    Thanks for the update!

I found a good deal , originally it was 600 per week , I got it discounted ...Lucky me!!!

I found gumtree and stayz.com helpful.

    Cheers

  11. All the best for your move .

Regarding the questions , I am still finding out, but as best as I can Answer , here goes :

    1) In which area of Perth most Asians (indians or pakistanis) live?

Bentley , Karawara, Northbridge ,and areas near the Universities, you will be able to find students from Asia and all over . Bustling and safe areas are the ones near Universities.

    2) Will I be able to secure a home for my family within a month time of arrival (on rent for one year)?

Housing Real Estate is by Viewing and appointments . Lots of people come to view and you have to be lucky to get a house . Some times references and contacts help.

    3) Initially I will be traveling alone and planning to bring my family after one month and during that time I have to secure the home, manage the bank account, Phone etc etc. one month is enough for that??

Yes. I guess 1 month should be enough to get all basic things done . Housing - Cannot be sure. Could be less than a week or more than a month , depends on where you look .

    4) When i am alone will I be able to get some budget accomodation for around one month and where? recommend any place

Book before you land in Perth . Search Gumtree or Stayz.com. Maybe you will find good deals for a week or two weeks - short term .

    5) Which areas are more safe to rasie a family with 2 kids? How is kewdale area?

Bentley ,kararwara , Bayswater , Joondalup, Fremantle , Subiaco - Areas near Universities are safe and have lot of students wandering all the time . Prettty active places.

Just anwer what ever you know as it will help

Anybody who is already in Perth now can help and I will appreciate that...

    Regards

  13. EK 422 : Emirates - DXB-PER

    April 2 :

After the long 11 hour flight from Dubai -Emirates, but very smooth and comfortable journey , landed at Perth International Airport with my wife around 1 30 pm. Immigration cleared in 5 minutes and Entry stamped in passports . Though a Few basic questions were asked about items we had declared and my passport was kind of slow to scan through the swipe machine due to old page. But later it scanned the data and got the Entry cleared.

Filled yellow declaration cards , collected Baggage and declared a few items like medicines, got baggage checked and all cleared.

Budget Rent a Car was waiting for me outside the Airport, Collected 2 Vodafone prepaid SIM cards ,and had a nice capuccino and off I drove to the Vines Guest House in the Elantra from Budget.

    Landing at 1 30 pm

    Immigration cleared 1 45 pm

    Baggage collected 2 pm

Budget Rent a Car 2 15 pm----------- $ 500 with excess damage covered

    Vodafaone 2 30 pm---------------------$ 40 Pre paid with 40 credit

    Capuccino 2 35 pm----------------------$ 16 Water bottles included

Had Mc Donalds at Ellenbrook --Dinner

Now I am resting in my room .

    Good Night

  14. To be honest , Rules change suddenly and so does the policy on Immigration. So, the study option is a bit risky.

Get an Agent and since you have a bachelors..I Presume......get some other option sorted out which will make your pathway easier and economical . Trust me with a good agent, your life will be made easier...processing, documentation , updating on changing rules and requirements of state governments ,sols etc etc etc

  16. To anyone coming to Australia without a job, don't come delay your migration. Australia is not working every state is down, I've applied for over 200 jobs, you don't get a call, you don't get a email you get nothing it all goes straight in the bin.

we've been here 8 months, spent $35,000 dollars and running at a loss of $1500 a month.

i would advise anyone coming here without a job, DON'T, wait till the last minute before you activate your visa, there isn't any work here, were in Brisbane, government cuts cuts cuts and believe me, it's far far worse than anything in the UK.

im a senior project manager, worked on the Olympics can't get a thing, lucky the wife has a job otherwise we would gone back at Xmas.

believe me guys, stay where you are Austarlia is not working for thousands of expats, many going back.

Hey..Thanks...I hope many will heed...many will seek....many will experience........I m flyin to Perth in about 4 weeks.....

    I m a Projects Manager worked for many BMS projects....London , MEast - Dubai...If I don't find a good job.....I will try and complete my PhD....at UWA..:)..

    Better Doctor than an Engineer....:)
