  1. yep - haggle for anything... same as UK, on price, on tank of fuel on whatever. they can say no, you can walk away.

check out carsales.com.au - and filter on location and car type to give you an idea of options and pricing

Thanks for the advice, that's great to hear.

Realistically its likely ill have to work in Melbourne main city / CBD area. Would you recommend train or car? Do you know what the commute is like from Langwarrin?

train is generally easier/quicker/cheaper although Metro trains are currently having a bad month mainly during evening rush hour.

Car can be 50mins - 2 hours depending on your luck.

Train - i drive to Seaford station on the Frankston line (kananook and Frankston stations are options, but parking is a nightmare). it takes about 10-15mins and then the express train runs every 8 minutes or so and is 50 minutes into Flinders street. - So i leave the house at 7am, get the 7:22 and get into the city at about 8:15

You could drive to cranbourne and take the train from there - i did it once. Never again. no parking and its only single track so trains only run every 30 minutes or so.

If you get your parking paid for then its an either or and you could chop and change depending on the day.. Parking can be v expensive in the CBD depending on when you arrive / leave, but at least $10-15 per day plus fuel. Train is $8.40 per day and parking free at the station.

  3. Welcome to Langwarrin!

for Cars, check out wells road in frankston. A lot of main dealers down there, as well as a number of used car dealers towards the north end  close to the basketball centre / kananook station. - most are pretty good.

Depending whereabouts you are in Langy you can dog walk at Lloyd Park ovals (the cricket ovals are gated but unlocked so you can let them off. ) there is also a leash free area towards Somerville on the warrandyte road.

Berettas is a good pub and does good cheap food every night, although you'll need to go a bit further afield for more sophisticated dining!

We've lived in Langwarrin for 3 years now and love it. Happy to answer any questions.

  4. Check out the frankston train line suburbs - Frankston itself is under an hour on the the express to flinders street. Express trains run about every 10 minutes.

That'll give you beach suburbs within your commute time. Start there and work towards the city with realestate.com.au to find houses in your budget. That should give you some targets

  5. whats your max (preferred) commute time?

Work that out and then follow the train lines out - that give you an indicator as to viable surburbs

Then you can filter on; proximity to beach(?), trees(?), large shopping centres(?), any other important factors(?)

  6. We are taking the in laws to Cairns/Port Douglas in mid January - cashing in qantas points for free(ish) flights.

We are staying in Port Douglas for 6 nights. Any suggestions as to must dos???  - We will have 2 kids 10&7 as well

  7. we managed to sell ours the day we left - but it was pretty close.

The estate agent had the keys - and we left the master with my in laws with the intention that if it didnt go through they could still have access if needed.

We got the call that we had completed as we pulled into the car park at heathrow!

We had worked to the date we were leaving and worked to that with the estate agent. the buyer was happy to work to that as well - sometimes you have to ride your luck

  8. Movecube sizes are on the website with some good videos to help you visualise.

    • Small: Height 1.871m         Width 1.114m       Length 0.964m     Volume 2.01m³
    • Medium: Height 1.871m      Width 1.464m       Length 1.112m     Volume 3.05m³
    • Large: Height 1.871m          Width 1.464m       Length 2.264m     Volume 6.20m³

best advice is to measure out on the floor and stack your stuff up to see if it fits. We used a large one - my post is below, with photos, might help you get an idea.

I have actually started Intermittent Fasting (for health reasons) and fast to 1pm each day. Usually go 16 - 18 hours fasting. Save a fortune on food 🙂

Maybe i should look into it. I am trying to work out easier / cheaper options for brekkie. I work all over and tend to commute into different client offices so dont have a desk, and they dont always have microwaves etc. I definitely dont want to be that guy thats eating on the train. does my head in. especially as some people seem to have worse eating habits than my kids.

currently i either take a banana and a cereal bar or its a coffee and bacon muffin from the cafe at $10 a go.

    Wow?!?!? What?

Our licenses was about $50 to transfer and we've just renewed for another 3 years for about $80 each. We are in Vic.

Internet was just the first payment - $65.

    That seems big numbers

  11. we used to pay a premium to go on singapore airlines and definitely thought it was worth it. - they were slightly more expensive but recently they've been much more aggressively pricing themselves in the market.

Currently looking for flights to the UK for next june/july. Best price on SA is 5k. qantas 8-10k for a family of 4. middle eastern carriers are similar to qantas, so its a no brainer.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

Kevsan, usage is no different, just the price seems to have shot up.

So who's your current provider and what rates are they now charging - if you share those, we might be able to help suggest options

  13. So has your usage increased or have your charges gone up??? If its usage you'll need to find the culprits and try and reduce those. if its charges, shop around and see if you can get a better deal

  14. yep - my UK TV works fine (its plugged into a foxel box for sat and FTA channels) but FTA also work directly (albeit intermittently), as does my UK Amazon Fire TV box and the Samsung Fridge Freezer that we shipped out
