  1. Thank you that's really useful, will have a look at them. Really, wigston? Small world! How you finding it out there?

we're loving it!! The autum weather is beautiful, loving the outdoor life, the fresh fruit and veg is divine.

It isn't perfect, traffic is a mare and education system doesn't live up to that of UK but overall we feel like we've done the right thing :)

looking forward to buying our own home to make it feel more like home. You'll love it!

  2. Hi there.

You could look at The Quest Apartments at Sactuary Lakes which is a lovely area of Point Cook

We lived in Leicester for a few years btw - Oadby/South Wigston areas!

Hi, we're moving over in October, we land on 18th to be precise! Very excited about moving to point cook area but i am looking for advice on where we can stop for a week or so around the area to get over jet lag and to get established to go buy things like mugs, plates etc before moving into a house. If anyone can recommend places to stay short term as we will have our 2 year old with us, it would be much appreciated.

    thanks

  3. Hi,

No problem at all, I rent in Williamstown - just off Douglas Parade. Have an investment house in Jan Juc too...... Lived in Willy for 7 years....

Would never, ever buy anywhere in Melbourne. Also have a portfolio out of Texas too (pm if you want details as we are setting up a consultancy for that).

Apologies for the ranting nature of my post, I just see people get sucked into these new development areas (ride the pushie around there alot too) and it just looks like a rubbish life to lead TBH. Willy has a direct train line into the CBD in 20mins, no need to sit on the freeway with all the people who have been sucked into buying around that area.

Great boozers (although I never really go anymore aka $10 a pint - no chance), and just a good little area. We currently pay $540 a week for a 3 bed massive house with a seperate garage for the toys and a big garden....

Anyway, just food for thought for you. If I can stop one person becoming a point cook car/commute zombie then I will feel better! Leave it to the third world immigrants to get sucked in - after all, that's what the 'big australia' con is all about :-)

Thanks for your reply - sounds like you are in a far more fortuitous position financially than we are, hence why we can't afford $540 a week house in Williamstown and instead have a $410 a week 4 bed house in point cook!

We went to Jan Juc the other week, its lovely down there.

Have you used the cycle route from Williamstown beach that brings you right into Sanctuary lakes? If not you must, its a beautiful ride with beautiful scenery and those of us roughing it in Point Cook have the benefit of that same as you in Williamstown!!!

I've only been to Williamstown beach but I've heard its a great place with plenty of nice eateries etc so its on our list of place to visit - only been here 12 weeks!

  4. Hi Andy.

Remember u kindly gave my hubby the ielts books?

well we've been here 3 mths now. Short term accomm is hard to

to find and therefore very expensive. I think the only way round it is to

to sign up on a normal 12 mth lease. It's not easy from home and I'm susure you'd

rather look round them yourself but we paid $780 a week for our short term let.

I have since seen people advertising their hohomes whilst ththey go hohome for a

month or so but prob not during Ozzie summer. We rented ours for 4 weeks only and got

the kids into school and signed up for a house within that time. Could be done in 3 if u get straight onto it! Good luck!

  5. My husband is a sparky do either of you know of any electrical contracting firms that are used on major construction sites?

seems to be a big secret and only way to get a list is to join the union for $600!

Any advice greatfully received. 12 weeks and still no work for him despite being sponsored for his skills!!

  6. Where do u live surf dirt just out of interest?

You are right in that the traffic in point cook is a ninightmare at peak times and does

drive me insane. However we live at the back of sanctuary lakes and are blessed with

the most amazing views in all directions. We have a cycle way out onto the wetlands and can

be on the beach within 10 mins. We have free use of a swimming pool, tennis courts, gym, golf course

and a lovely big house with spacious garden that we quite simply couldn't afford elsewhere. So whilst

you are correct about the traffic, they are in the process of building a team system and hopefully ththe infrastructure

will catch up eventually. The reason it's currently cheap to buy here is that it's a new area and as with all new arareas are trying to

to attract people to live in an area that isn't established. I think most of us in the area know this and personally we would rather live

here and suffer a bit of traffic (ok a lot!) than live in a not so pleasant area because we couldn't afford an equal house in a so called 'better' area.

We haven't bought yet, would u recommend where you live surfndirt?

    Geez,

How many more times - point cook and all that new area is rubbish. Again, I am now working in Laverton at the DoD. A lady in the office lives in Sanc Lakes. It takes her 90mins to get from there to Laverton (look on a map - it aint far). This morning I had to come back out of the city from our Lasses office - the traffic jam into the CBD was at least 20ks long. Starts BEFORE the point smuck exit to the freeway.

Big house? Modern? Double garage? Garden? .......... Cheap? THERE'S A REASON....... Do you'se think a similar size house in a good area of London would be cheap i.e. somewhere that wasn't 1 plus to get to work? Why do you think Melbourne is, in any way, different....? It isn't.

Honestly, for the sake of sanity - don't move to Point Smuck etc if you plan on working in the CBD. Or basically needing to get out of the god forsaken place at peak times....

  7. The electrical licensing system varies from state to state.

Best thing is to speak to energy safe in state you're moving

and find out directly from them what the procedure is.

It gets confusing when there's conflicting advice on here when they're

All prob right but diff for each state and diff routes ie TRA or Vetassess.

One thing I do know is that it's extremely difficult to get a company to

take you on just with the restricted license in Victoria and I believe

WA too. Once u have the golden 'A license' there are plenty of jobs but

need a company to take u on with the restricted license in order to attain the

A license in vic. Be warned sparkies, make sure either your wives can get a good

job or that u come with plenty of money to get by on. It's tough!!

  8. Hi all

Been here in Sanctuary Lakes for 6 weeks now but struggling to meet people locally.

Where is everyone?? Hardly seen our neighbours at all.

We have 2 kids aged 7 & 10 and would love a family game of tennis or drink by the lake with some other friendly families!!

  9. I am assuming you have tried moving-to-melbourne.co.uk?

Hi Buzzy-Bee and Moving to Melbourne

I have looked on the Moving to Melbourne site but can only find a 1 bed apartment.

We are a family of 4 so need at least a 2 bed preferably a 3 bed house.

Can't even see anything in the near vicinity - am I missing something?

    Many thanks

  10. twenty five years knowledge ha ha

Have you joined the Life in Victoria forum there is a link at the foot of the page. Lots of the members now living here and a lot of useful information.

    Petals please help me!!

I had decided on these areas but am now having my doubts as I think I will end up working in the CBD and a lot of people have said the commute will just be too long. I have started thinking about sanctuary lakes in point cook but something inside me is saying I should go East.

Property looks to be really expensive bayside probably due to closer proximity to CBD and beaches but is there anywhere you could recommend in the East that is nice, not too expensive and not too long a commute to CBD. We fly in January and I just can't male a decision on area. As we have kids I need to get it right first time so we don't have to move them again. Major decision for a rubbish decision maker!!!

Any help by anyone would be very much appreciated!

  11. Hi im Steve and im 17. I am currently on my second year of my electrical apprenticeship in the UK but im moving to Mornington just outside of melbourne with my famliy at the end of january. I am looking to carry on with my apprenticeship out there, is there anyone that could advise me what to do, in order to carry it on, i.e local companys and collages in which i can contact for further information.

    many thanks Steve

    Hi Steve

The Fowlers are also moving to the Mornington are in Jan and my OH is also an electrician.

Have you found anywhere to stay yet and have you heard of much work for sparkies in the area?

  12. Is she Team 33 Brisbane? If so I think we have the same CO.

We had an email from her this morning: -

Thank you for your emails and for the documents provided.

I now have all the documents that I require at this stage.

Your application is now pending your health assessment outcomes.

Should I require any further information, I will contact you in due course.

So now we're just waiting for the medicals to be finalised. I've emailed GH today to see what the status on them is. I'm hoping that from the email above, we are good to go as soon as the medicals are finalised!!!

  13. there are plenty of construction sites as new housing estates are going up all over, there is so much land over here and they are building every where but there is space so thats ok :), we are in officer and the train stop is across the road ( more like a duel carriage way) from us it takes about 45 mins to an hour on the train to the city i dont think most people drive there because of the toll roads and it is just so built up an busy its much easier to jump on the train, would you be looking for work in the city or are you just thinking of going just for the shopping and sites ??, berwick is lovely its the next junction off the freeway bout 10 mins down the road and cranbourne is a few minutes past there off the clyde road, the hunts club is cranbourne east ive heard that is an ok area but most expats avoid cranbourne as were told its ( crimebourne) well i have anyway, officer and pakenham are very nice area's the arena and lakeside estates, housing is very descent in size and quality for what you pay in rental mornington is closer to the city you can see the sky scapers from there shore line its beautiful the peninsula is a lovely place but bit more pricey as you are on the shore, hope this helps good luck with your move :)

    Hi Michelle

Thanks so much for your post!

I seriously don't know how I will ever decide on an area!! I haven't heard of officer before, maybe I'll throw that one into the pot for consideration also!!!

Have you been to Mordialloc? That is another one someone recommended to us. Oh my this is crazy choosing somewhere to live when you've never been!

I've not heard anything bad about Mornington other than its a long way out and is expensive but expense is not something we can afford!

    Decsions decisions

  14. 5 weeks ago i was sat in my lounge back in manchester panicking about flying to melbourne in 1 week, not having a clue about anything or knowing how to get any where, well.... we have been here 4 weeks now and i can officially say that all the panic was for nothing!!!! my o/h company put us up in a serviced apartment for a month in narre warren, a friend my o/h met ova fb who lives in berwick very kindly borrowed us his 4x4 and gps to get around untill we bought a car (which we did after 2 weeks ) my hubby went off to start his new job a week after arriving and i was left to find my way around, it only took me 3 days and i put the gps away the roads are so easy to follow here you have the m1 freeway that will take you around the outskirts and get you where you are going and you have the princess highway that runs thru the middle and any where you are heading for is clearly sign posted off there, the differant area's you look at on the maps are really quite close together you can get from berwick to cranbourne east in bout 10 minutes berwick to frankston to the beech in about 20 following the princess hyw an onto frankston dandnong road its sign posted so well,, trains are the same every little village has a station we have just moved into our long term rental in the suburb of officer it is very nice here new houses going up we have a lovely area called lakeside across the road in pakenham plenty of shops schools parks and play area's, so glad we are finally here i hope this will put some of your minds at rest if you are still in the uk and worrying a little, looking forward to settling in our new home :)

    Hi

So good to hear things are going well.

We are thinking of coming to that area in January - berwick, cranbourne, maybe mornington but I'm concerned that we might be a nit too far out there for work opportunities? We think we'd love it there but would there be many job opportunities for us if we settled there? My OH is an electrician - are there many construction sites at the moment? How long would it take to get to Melbourne by car and train from where you are?

Many thanks, its so hard imagining thing from this end as you well know!!!
