  1. Hi all, im wondering if anybody on the forum has up to date experience on gaining an electrical fitters license in Perth or other states. Im finding the whole thing a nightmare. I currently hold a ARTC cert classifying me as an electrical fitter and was sent a letter along with my restricted license telling me to book a test at Balga TAFE. Prior to coming to Oz id read alot of information and was under the impression i needed to carry out a course with a test at the end? Not the case it seems I need to to a straight 3 hour theory exam and 4 hour practical taken on different dates. I thought ok, rang the collage booked a date and asked if there were any courses I could take prior to the test to refresh my knowledge baring in mind alot of stuff probably covered in this test I hadnt looked at since my apprenticeship. I was put through to a TAFE lecturer who informed me there was no course designed for this as it was just testing my core knowledge as an electrician. Fair enough I thought I could do abit of reading of text books in prep. Today I received the letter informing me of my test date etc etc. In this letter it informs me that I am required to bring along a copy of Australian Wiring Rules and a copy of the Australian Cabling Selection. I do not own and have never seen these books!? surely I should be able to do some kind of course to familiarize myself with these books? I am especially worried as in the letter telling me to book this course it states that if you get less than 40% you are not allowed to re sit the test and are advised to carry out a mature apprenticeship. I cant believe how hard it has been to gain a license here in Australia and its really putting a massive downer on our experience here. Any help would be appreciated. r10ley
  2. When you refer to an A grade license, is this a electrical mechanics license, can a fitter get an A grade license? I have my 2391 and do a bit of test and inspection for my company although im not registered with anyone like the NIC etc. Who knows how they work it out, probably just depends on their mood. Thanks r10ley
  3. Hi, yeah I totally agree, ive lost the amount of times ive winged to my partner about how silly the system is. Out of interest what did the practical exam involve to gain the mechanical license? Thanks for your help r10ley
  4. Also when you say " For Electrical mechanic This is a 2 week electrical trade licensing course (IEE regs course in UK)." Is this if you are classified as a electrical mechanic by the ATRC? and if you are classified as a fitter its just a one day course? Thanks for your help. r10ley
  5. Hi, thanks for the post very useful. Your situation is very similar to mine as I am an industrial maintenance electrician and when I apply will also probably be issued a electrical fitters licience. Im still unclear to a couple of point with regard to obtaining a license which I hope you can help with. When you say "I have my electrical fitters ARTC to which I will be doing a one day course to gain my restricted license (fitting work only)" does this mean once you have been classified as a electrical fitter you are required to complete a one day course to get the license at a TAFE?
  6. Hi , im looking to import my BMW 3 series 320i coupe 2007. I purchased it recently for £15000 and im looking to move over to Oz in around a years time. Ive been told by numerous people that I should import it and id make good money however going threw the numbers im sceptical. Am I missing something. I came up with these figures from the following website: http://www.anglopacific.co.uk/documents/importing-cars-aus.pdf Transportation cost - £1200 ($1920) Oz port charges - $150 Customs clearance - $850 Quarantine Inspection - $250 Customs Valuation - $320 Duty Tax 15% - $5000 (probably more) GST 10% - $4250 (probably more) Thats a total of $12740 in fees and thats before I get anything converted to meet Oz standards. If I sold my car now for £15000 at todays exchange rate thats $24000 Thats a total of $36740 (probably more) and looking at this model in Oz they are advertised for around $40000 but probably buy it for less. I just cant see how doing this would be worth all the hassle when I could just buy one is Oz without any fuss. Am I missing something? Thanks
