1. thanks for the responses. boganbear: I guess I wanted to take advantage of being back in the UK and also applying for a UK passport for our child. I have visions of costs and eligibility changing as time goes on (paranoia of the UK government I guess!). I understand what you are saying about waiting, but I really just wanted to see if I could get it done whilst I am in the UK and "sleep easy" knowing our child has that British passport. sniffer: no issues as the UK passport form states if the application is for a child then the individual counter signing is actually validating the adult's identity (i.e my identity). It does also state the person counter signing should also be able to match the identity of the child with the photo of the child, which again is a non-issue in this case. cheers
  2. Hi all, My wife and I are UK citizens and British passport holders. We have also obtained PR status in Australia but have not yet gained Australian citizenship. However our child was born after our PR status and as such is an Australian citizen and holds an Australian birth certificate (our child is now 8 months old) We are planning a trip to the UK for 3.5 weeks in December this year (and a bit of Jan 2015). I am in the process of applying for an Australian passport for my little one - this process all seems straight forward. What I do need is some guidance and advice from anyone who has applied for a British passport for their Australian born child WHILST visiting the UK. My intention is to get the UK passport application form completed and submitted for our child as soon as we land in the UK. I understand it could take a number of weeks or even a month, however we plan on using our parent's postal address in the UK to have the passports (and any original documents) returned to. As far as I can tell, I can provide my UK birth certificate as my child's proof to show eligibility for her UK passport. I also understand I need to provide my child's original birth certificate as a proof. As the passport agency requires originals, I know this shouldn't impact me with getting back to Australia on my UK/British passport (accompanied with my PR VISA GRANT Letter). Likewise my child will return on their Aussie passport so no dramas there. Any tips or advice would be really appreciated as there are certain questions which I can answer positively/"yes" as long as I am physically in the UK when I lodge the application so I dont need to do an "overseas" passport application. Hope this all makes sense! Thanks
  3. thanks guys... its still a bit odd as one of the first options is :

Please advise your residency status during the 2011-12 income year.

  You were a:

     Full year Australian resident

   Full year non-resident

Part year resident. Still quite confusing though!
  4. sorry to dig up an old thread but i was hoping someone was able to shed some light on a TFN "issue". I applied for my TFN as soon as i landed in Australia and received it mid June 2012. My wife and I did not start working until July (i.e the 2012 - 2013 tax year). My wife had to speak to the ATO for something else recently and they told her that because we technically received our TFN in the 2011-2012 tax year that we had to submit a tax return for that year. Just wondering if this is correct and how we are supposed to fill everything in for the just 15 days of that tax year? There are a lot of questions about income, medicare levy charges etc... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks
  5. Hi all, thanks for the information in this very useful thread. 189 skills assessment submitted to ACS (ICT Business Analyst) - 7/Apr/13 189 skills assessment granted - 8/Jul/13 EOI application submitted - 8/Jul/13 I am currently in Australia on a 457 visa and I wanted to know if anyone was able to provide any confirmation about the medical/police checks required as part of the 189 process. Both my wife and are are applying for the visa (her as my dependent). We were both born in the UK and have no medical issues. We were not required to perform any medical checks or examinations when we first came to Australia on my 457 visa. Therefore, can anyone confirm if the medical and police checks are still required/mandatory for the 189? Is this something the CO makes a call on or is there something which explains the criteria? I really want to know if there is anything I should be doing right now to ensure that so soon as I get the EOI invitation I can have the necessary proofs and docs in place to submit. thanks so much for any assistance
  6. haha... no not pregnant (well at least i hope i am not - I dont think my man plumbing downstairs is geared up for a baby-sized object being excreted) I did see the Nobby's nuts, but alas they were all plain salted nuts or dry roasted almonds / cashew / macademia etc. I'll take a look in BWS, hopefully they will have something that tickles my fancy. thanks!
  7. Howdy, so...we are just starting the third week in Brisbane now. Managed to find a place to live and ill be starting work in a week. Credit card has been getting hammered with buying all the domestic stuff : Fridge, washing machine, microwave, bed, mattress, sofas, tables & chairs ... etc onto my point... I got cravings of the dry roasted peanuts (like the KP ones from back in the UK). Alas I cannot find any dry roasted peanuts in all the places i have been (coles, woolies, aldi etc...) let alone the KP variety. Anyone around the Brisbane area know somewhere that sells them? thanks!
  8. glad to say we made it onto our flight! This was even though the flight landed on time but was held at the gate for 15 minutes as there was a sick child on board so the men in white suits had to board and give everything the green light before passengers could dissembark! Felt sorry for the poor kid though, cant have been nice being sick on that journey. In addition to this, our bags (all 150kg of them!) took about 20 minutes to reach the baggage reclaim. We also had to go to the special channel for AQIS customs as we declared food and some wooden items. This took about an additional 5 minutes and the customs person was lovely and took one look at what we were declaring and allowed us through. So we then had to recheck bags in the domestic terminal which was only a 5 minute walk. This took about 10 minutes as the "auto" baggage drop machines where having hissy fits. I approached another Qantas attendant and politly asked if she could assist. She got me to another attendant actually on the check in desks and again they were brilliant and really helpful. Security check was about another 10 minutes ... and that was that - we got to our gate with 40 minutes to spare. thanks and i hope this helps other people thinking about trying to make the same flight combo QF010 and QF608. P.s our total journey was 30 hours door to door and we were cream crackered when we finally got to our hotel in Brisbane. We had a quick bite to eat and then we forced ourselves to stay up as late as possible resisting the temptation to go to sleep. We went for a nice long walk and then eventually hit the sack at 8pm. This has proved to be so useful as now (two days in) I think with another day I will have adjusted alomost entirley to the Aussie times! I even stayed up till midnight yesterday to watch the Grand Prix (still woke up at 4am though!)...but as i said i think a few more days and i'll have it cracked.
  9. we are just about to leave Singapore for the second leg of thwe flight to Melbourne thanks for the message and for taking the time to do some checking with Melbourne Nikci.... fingers crossed it all works out on that end... else I am sure we will just get stuck on the next Qantas flight to Brisbane which is an hour later. Good news is that we had a lovely Qantas check in attendant at Heathrow who was lenient with the baggage allowances (even though i prepaid excess baggage for 3 extra bags, we were still a little over the limit!) see y'all down under
  10. Alas, when I booked the tickets I had assumed the bags get routed to Brisbane automatically from Melbourne and we then do the whole customs dance in Brisbane (so i thought the 2 hours would be more than enough time at Melbourne to simply get to the other gate) Oh well I hope this info helps anyone else. I'll just keep my fingers and toes crossed for the 22 hour journey Thanks
  11. Great, thanks pommettes! I feel a lot better now. I was also planning to tell the folks at London Heathrow check in to put priority labels on all the luggage so in theory it comes out first at Melbourne airport baggage reclaim. I have visions of us being delayed and then sprinting to the gate, just making it in the plane to be greeted by angry faces as we have delayed their departure lol
  12. Hi folks, having a mini panic here... is 2 hours enough time to transfer off an inbound international flight arriving at Melbourne T2, collect out checked bags, navigate Melbourne customs, transfer to Melbourne T1 (domestic terminal), check in and re-check bags and then get to the gate for our domestic flight to Brisbane? Our flight is scheduled to land at Melbourne at 5.45 and our flight to Brisbane departs at 8.05. please someone tell me im worrying for no reason. The pessimist in me says the inbound flight will be delayed for some reason, we will get held up collecting bags, customs will want to go through every bag (not that we will be giving them any reason to do so) ... and thus miss our connecting flight ....i think i have been watching too much "nothing to declare" on TV
