  1. Hi Ellie, thanks. Could you clarify approx commute time from the suburbs you mention to Parramatta? Thx
  2. Thanks to both of you, I will go and have a good look at the suburbs you mention. In NZ, OH currently commutes by car for 1.5hrs each way and that is a huge problem, so we def want to reduce that, but I guess our main priority would be good schools and access to facilities!! Here we live on a small estate in the middle of nowhere, with no facilities!! Driving us insane, so yes we def want a pub/cafes/shops/ other people!! etc nearby..
  3. Hi all I know you will have seen people asking these questions a million times, but could anyone help us please? We currently live in NZ, but we are considering a transfer to Sydney with my OHs employer. He would be based in a Parramatta office, but also has an office in the main cbd. We are looking for some advice on suburbs between the 2 areas please or suggestions of anywhere else assuming commute is less than 30-40 mins(with relatively easy commutes). We are a family with a 4 year old, who I believe would start school end of Jan, so we need to narrow down to suburbs with good primary schools. We would be looking to rent and would be looking around the $600-$700 per week mark. Could anyone give me a start point? We have been to Sydney before but only as tourists, so we are aware of the scale of Sydney!! We started looking on real estate, but there are just too many suburbs!! No idea where to start... Thanks!!
  4. Hi could you advise us on the following car: 1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon - 2010 Peugeot 3008 2 litre HDI (150 bhp version),Exclusive (top of the range with aircon & panoramic roof), 38,000 miles, manual transmission 2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!) - £10,000- £12,000 3) Market value in Australia - $25,100 - $27,900 (based on private price on red car - but not sure which model is comparable?), on second hand dealer sites it seems to have price tag of around $30,000 - $35,000 Thanks!
  5. Hi yep, we tried there as the pink cottage is next door to some very good friends of ours! Unfortunately its not available on the dates we are after. But thanks anyway & I have now found a site called airbrb which seems to have well priced accomodation all over brisbane. Thanks again though
  6. Thanks to both replies, it appears UK visa debit is ok as 2 car hire companies have now contacted me saying they are happy with UK debit cards. Apex and Brisbane budget rentals. Thanks for the advice!
  7. Hi all & Happy Christmas Wonder if anyone can help us? We are looking for some accomodation preferably in Sandgate area with easy access to trains into Brisbane CBD, for 10 days from Monday 27th May 2013. It would be for 2 adults and a toddler. We are looking for pref 2 beds and would consider unit or house - just trying to find somewhere at a reasonable price. For some reason hotels seem very expensive on those dates, Any advice would be appreciated, thanks
  8. Hi all & Happy Christmas! Wonder if anyone would be able to help me? We are trying to hire a car from Brisbane airport but it appears we need a credit card to do so. As we have now sold our house we cancelled all credit cards and now only have visa debit cards for our main current account in the UK. We dont want to open credit card account here as there is no point! Can anyone recommend a car hire company at Brisbane airport that will hire me a car using a visa debit card instead? Thanks for your help!
  9. Various currently he is lead design engineer working on water supply of a new nuclear reactor - I think the scheme is around £4.5 million, he is currently seconded into WS Atkins water design consultancy but he actually works for a large uk water company. Has been with them for last 12 years in various design and construction engineering roles (ie project management) on potable water and waste water sewerage schemes. Also has water pipeline experience and treatment package plant. Has 12 years civil engineering in total but was only qualified to HND level, has been completing last part of his degree on a part time basis. Hence why we havent moved before now - wanted to go with full degree status - although has been in fully qualified roles in UK for 8 years.
  10. Hi all Thanks very much for the advice & bumps. Frogian - we are in touch with konnecting but will contant the others thanks!, Now Perth - thanks for your advice as well, yes we have contacted a number of contractors & consultancies as my husband has experience in both. We are also working via linked in, although I dont think we have that at max use!! and yes we have friends in Australia trying to help as well. I think one of the issues is that my husbands experience is in water engineering, which seems to have many advertised roles but not prepared to sponsor. We have spoken to visa agents and know we would be acceptable for perm visas but wanted to go out on a 4 yr 457 initially, plus visa agents agree we probably could avoid the cost. As we are not in huge hurry to leave, want to be over & settled by June next year, we will press on with contacting people & see what happens! Thanks again for everyones help
  11. Hi all, we are relative newbies to PIO but we have sold our house and just moved into temp accomodation ready to sort out moving to Australia!! Just wondered if anyone could give us any tips on places to look for sponsored civil engineering roles? Have tried scouring the web via google, seek etc and applied for various positions, but feel we are missing something as we know there are plenty of opportunities!!! Any engineers out there who have recently sourced a role like this, would you be able to advise us? We would prefer to head to Queensland but will go anywhere and consider FIFO Thanks guys!
