  1. I became a citizen on Australia day last month.

I have my citizenship certificate and am due to collect my passport on Monday, from the passport office.

The issue is that my immigration account still says approved and my vevo still has my PR visa as in effect.

Should I be worried, should I ignore it and is there anyone in particular I should contact, or should I just wait it out?

    Thanks a million. 🙂

Repetition doesn't mean something is right, though.

Professionals aren't always correct, either. I have seen more than one response to finance/tax questions from professionals on this forum which I have been absolutely certain were wrong.

No one is right 100% of the time, even in their own field.

The only thing that is known for sure is that citizenship applications are not approved whilst the applicant is offshore (except in the most limited of circumstances which to all intents and purposes don't apply to the average person).

Believe what you want dude, but its true. Whether you want to split hairs or not.

  3. Does anyone know how long it takes from the ceremony date, to actually being classed as a citizen by immigration?

.I became an Australian on the 26th of last month, but my immi account is still showing as approved and hasn't changed to finalised. My VEVO still says resident too.

I would like to apply for my passport ASAP as I'm due to travel back for a visit to Ireland next month, but the passport office still can't verify my citizenship certificate as it looks like it hasn't been added to the system yet.

    Anyone got any timeframe ideas?

    Thanks a million. 🙂

  4. You can definitely leave. Jut make sure you lodge your application in Australia and while you are away, it will not be considered. They will only move on it while you are onshore.

As said above, make sure you have plenty of time on your right to return on your PR visa, although if it was only granted in March, you should be fine because they usually come with a 5 year travel facility.

In terms of a 2 year process, it might be... BUT, it seems to depend entirely on where in Australia you are located. I became a citizen on Wednesday and my process was 5 months, from lodgement to the ceremony, so I'd take any suggested timelines with a pinch of salt, but be aware that you might have a really short wait, all the way up to the 2 years quoted. No one really knows.

    Good luck. 🙂

Oh wow! Ceremony invite just 7 days before the event? That's great!

    You are in QLD right?

Yeah, I'm in QLD, but in a very remote, small community so I half expected that. I'm pretty sure I personally know every other person getting their citizenship next week. We've been getting really excited about it. 🙂

Is Torres way up in north Qld @annagilda?  Bit different to Tassie.  😁

    Congrats on your citizenship!

Hi Toots! Yeah, very different to little old Devonport! I miss Tassie hugely, but I got the opportunity to head up the High Risk foot Service in the Torres Strait and I just couldn't say no, it's the most exceptional opportunity of my lifetime!

Hope you're doing well. I was supposed to be back down for a holiday at the moment, but what with this Delta trouble, I thought it best to stay where I am. Plus I'd hate to get stuck elsewhere and for the Hospital to lose one of it's clinical services, just so I could have a holiday. I'd love a break though hahaha! Just as I imagine most healthcare workers across the globe would too!

Hope you're doing fantastically well and thanks for the Citizenship "love." Can't wait to become an Irish/Aussie! 😄

  7. Tassie's great, cost of living is not as cheap as some people might have you believe, very comparable to the mainland and a lot of things have to be freighted down, but it's a wonderful thing.

One thing to be mindful of, is that if you end up going at all rural, access to health services as you age can be quite limited. Hobart and to a lesser extent Launceston have all the things you'd need, but don't move to the east or west coast and expect easy access to services.

Overall, I love Tassie and I'd recommend it to anyone.

  8. Hi Nicola,

I've been here for 4 years now and am a Podiatrist, Trained in Plymouth and worked in the NHS.

I work for a high risk foot service for one of the state governments. It's pretty fab, a bit different.

Give me a shout if you'd like any information. 🙂

It's a wild night out there.  Wind right off the mountains and pouring with rain.  Even the dog took one look outside, turned and trotted back into the house.

It certainly has been wild! I left work this evening and got absolutely drenched!!

Did you hear the thunder this morning at about 4:30? So loud!! It was kind of cozy all tucked up in bed listening to it, but it was a bit hard getting up for work a couple of hours later. Haha!

We also had a good bit of rain early yesterday morning.  🙂  Today is a lovely day.  I was out early with the animals and it was one of those clear, windless mornings.  Watched good old Searoad Tamar sailing into Devonport.  I miss the old Searoad Mersey.  We've got the new one now instead.

I wish this wind would quit.

  12. It really was beautiful yesterday. I went for a Kayak down the Cam River in Somerset. This morning was a bit ropey, but this afternoon was beautiful. Back to the grindstone in the morning, so won't get to enjoy the weather this week in Devonport, but the forecast for next weekend is looking alright. It'll probably change half a dozen times before then though. 🙂

Been looking at 190 but now thinking maybe 489 would also be worth looking at.

Question I have though is there are 3 of us 2 adults and a old-teen.

How does the qualification to PR application work do all three have to live in region for 2 years and work in region for 1 year or is it just the main applicant?

    Reason for asking,

1 - partner may not work (one income family as in UK)

2 - child may get a place in good UK uni and so commute between UK and Oz for term times (so would be in country much less than us) and not working much (if at all)

I will ask my agent but it just came to me now and thought some of you might know the answer anyway

If you are eligible for the 190 and the sponsoring state is offering you a 190, I would take the PR as soon as possible. Which state are you applying to?

I'm on a 489 which has worked well for me, but I'm single, applied at the end of a working holiday visa with noting much to lose, it's tough not having PR. I can't undertake certain study that work want to put me forward for as the costs are too high, I can't buy a house without all sorts of astronomical fees and the wait for PR is a decent one, even once you meet the 2 year obligation.

I'm still in my 20s (just) and am single and having the craic, so it works for me, but I don't think I would want to bring a family out here on anything less than PR. (Although people do it with great success.)
