We moved to Sydney with no jobs (husband is Australian and I am Italian), after 17 years in London/Essex. That was 8 years ago! Don’t regret it one bit. I’m a teacher and I worked in private/Catholic and now state school.

if you live in a good area state high schools as well are excellent. Same goes for primary. I do understand that you might still need to pay fees as International students.

when we arrived youngest went in local state primary and oldest in Catholic. The kids settled in very well. At the time my oldest was 12 and she adjusted to Sydney high school with no problem. Youngest had a similar experience.

We love it here, my story is slightly different as we only left friends in the Uk (my family is whole in Italy) . Don’t miss the Uk at all, just miss vicinity to Europe to be honest.

we sold our Uk home a couple of years ago and it was handled all by our estate agent. We also used their conveyancer.

We did need to sign contract in front of a lawyer here in Australia from memory.

It was not complicated (even though we had a buyer pulling out)

our child is turning 18 soon and she has a child fund in the Uk.

We are going to give them a call when she does, but I’m just wondering how easy it was to withdraw from Australia (if anyone has any experience?)

I really think it’s more about the area than a particular school. Public schools in good areas are excellent.

I only know this because I am currently going through the early childhood route and had your predicament of three years BA Primary Ed with QTS and have then gone and done an early years PGCE (I chose this rather than a masters degree because I have been working mostly in early years since gaining QTS so thought the EYTS would be useful for my career in the UK too anyway). But when applying for skills assessment and the EOI (through an agent) I have had to provide proof that I have work experience in the early years sector as well as my placement days. I also then needed to provide this evidence when applying for the SA Teachers Registration Board Qualification Assessment.

Hi,

there are some occupations that grant permanent residency even, for people under 50. You need to go to a remote area though and just certain professions. Just google and have a read. Good luck. 

Hi, we had a similar situation when we came in 2015. Our daughters birthday is 22/07 so she was the youngest in Uk. Back then she was in year 4, and moving here she was meant to go to y3. However we insisted she'd go to year 4, as she wasn't happy about going to a younger grade. It has worked out ok, she's a bit behind with her results, but socially at the moment she fits well. She's starting y7 in January and is very happy and exited. Just do what your guts tell you, if you want him to stay in year 3 just ask the school

Hi Christina, welcome! You need to be positive. when I got here it took me ages to get registred as my degree is from Italy so I had to sit English tests. I am a high school teacher. 3 months after I registred I got a 1 year contract starting last January and I just got renewed. Most jobs come out between October and now though. when do you arrive? Situation here for work in Sydney is slow compared to the Uk, but with perseverance and a bit of luck you should be fine. Don't expect permanent jobs either.

I'm new to the forum and have some questions regarding finding a teaching job if anyone can help.

I'm a native French speaker but I have been teaching in the UK for 10 years (French/German teacher).

Visa SI/189 was granted on 04/05/16 and I am now looking for a job in Oz.

 

Does anyone know how easy it is to find a French teaching job out there? I would actually go where I can find a post to start with.

Would you register to get the teacher accreditation before you apply for any job or after when you actually get a job offer?

I'd like to start in January 2017.

Any suggestions welcome!

In Nsw there seems to be mostly jobs for French. It seems to be the most popular out here in terms of European languages. I am an MFL teacher too, but I teach Italian Spanish (any level) and ks3 French.

Have a look on teachers.net a lot of jobs come up there. I am currently looking for a new job too as I am on a contract still December. I think during term 4 there will be more jobs posted, at least I hope. Bonne chance !

Dispute it, they'll try anything to fail you.. Normally for. Ielts they fail you on speaking or writing as for those there is more space for subject judgement.. I disputed a ielts writing and passed.

Hi Lulu as Marisa and others point out a detached house is the best. I imagine one day you'll have kids and being with a garden and freedom from noise(apartment and terraced even can get very noisy) is totally worth the extra money. Also the freedom to modify house as you please in the future if needed. Concerning the timing we are also hoping to buy soon (waiting to start my teaching in January and hopefully will be ready by then) and it seems as the market has slowed down a bit in Sydney.

In state schools there is only really the one in NSW, the Teachers' Federation. Don't know if there are any specifically for the independent schools. Would recommend you join it though.

Hi Jes86, in the UK I could teach Spanish, Italian and French. In Nsw I was approved only for Italian and Spanish. I think it depends on your degree. Best thing you can do is to get in touch with Bostes (or other State institution). The best way to emigrate is to get a partner visa. However do check if you can find teaching jobs, just to make sure you are making the right move.

Well guys my situation is even more complicated! I must sit an English test, as my degree is from Italy. This is despite I have a UK Pgce, 18 years in the UK and 2 of those teaching in UK secondary schools. Absolutely ridiculous, now I have to shell more money. To teach in private schools I must do the Ielts and then later the Peat if I wish to teach in Nsw government schools. It's going to cost nearly $900 hoping I pass first time, as they make them quite difficult for foreigner teachers. Arghhhhhh

Hi. Here they are very specific about the qualifications....For example my Pgce from the UK is in French and Spanish, however I have been accredited just for Italian and Spanish. (As I have Italian Ba honours with lots of Spanish exams). I have sometimes seen ads with "willingness to teach" so I suppose that's like a second subject. I suppose Chinese, Japanese or Indonesian. Have a look where you want to live to decide which one to choose. Alternative is to just offer Italian/Spanish. I can see sometimes some jobs for French/Italian not many for Spanish.

Hi guys, I sent off my qualifications to Bostes today! Very excited hopefully I get an outcome soon and there are no problems. I might have to seat the Peat test which is quite a pain and expensive. Has anyone on here done it? It is only usually needed if your main studies were done in a non English speaking country. My degree is from Italy, however my Pgce is from the Uk so I'm hoping they'll let me off (even though I doubt it).

I'm getting confused now. I'm applying for the 301/100 as my husband is Aussie. We have 2 children. Before I submit the application they will have Aus citizenship by descent and Aus passports.

No problem. Just those 2. But it asks are they migrating with you?

They are certainly coming with us....but are they migrating? They are Aus citizens in their own right. So do you tick yes or no?

Someone on Another thread said they're not included on the application but they had to put down the kids aus passport numbers....i cant see the bit on the form for that...it is late though here!!

Also will they need to have medicals as my dependents? Blurb says all dependents need medicals. Do Aussie passport holding children have to have medicals too??

Hi, when I applied one of my children had passport while the for the other I had to apply for citizenship and passport. I didn't have to add them as migrants but just add their details (passports number etc). For the one waiting for citizenship our CO just asked us to clarify if we were applying for citizenship. You should be fine without adding them to the migration, which is good news as otherwise they would need also visa etc...That would be costly and would take a long time.
