Can you work as a TA without the licence?

What's the difference in the money TA -restricted-A grade

    How long you been there?

It's all abit worrying we arrive 18june, I'm booked on ETL for mid July and need to be working very soon after, I was told by a mate out there agencies get loads so I presume your right you need licence before u get a sniff!

Good luck get me a job!

    Gary

  2. Hi ian, are you in Perth at the moment?

I have been told theres loads of work if you call the agencies, not sure if that's for assistants or A licence though.

    Let me know

    cheers

    gary

thanks Mark for your reply. what we have found for far in Perth is that there doesnt seem to be many trade assistant electrical posts and when they do come up everyone is applying for them. here is a different route to get the A grade licenxe. you can do a two week course and no log book needed. will keep on pestering recruitment companies and cold calling companies.

any further advice from others been in a similar situation with getting a foot in the door in Perth is appreciated.

    Ian

  3. Arthur,

I pressume this is just in Victoria?

have you any idea what will happen in june/july when the national data base thing comes in?

or does that just apply to transfering licencing once gained?

im off to perth and am still under the impresion that after a 2 week course(and passing!) I can apply to energy safe and will get my licence.

    what a palavar!!

    cheers

    gary

    Richard,

im almost sure you must do the log book even in Vic, you can only go via Vet these days even if you get the TRA ir must 1st be Vetassess then the TRA. if you can get away with NOT doing the log book in Victoria then say nothing mate.

have a read of this from EPIC website mate:

The LEA is a combination of three separate assessments, sat at three different times:

    • Safe Working Practice for Electricians Assessment (SWP) - 40 minutes
SWP tests your ability to safely disconnect then reconnect a piece of electrical equipment.
    • Licensed Electrician Theory Assessment (LET) - 2 hours
The theory tests a broad range of knowledge (see LET Sample Exam).
    • Licensed Electrician Practical Assessment (LEP) - 3 hours
The LEP is a practical test in four parts: wiring a meter box and switchboard, MEN system testing, identifying visual defects and testing an installation.

You must pass all three LEA assessments within three years of your first sitting. All assessments have a minimum pass mark of 75%.

    Top LEA Requirements

To be eligible to sit the individual components of the LEA, the following prerequisites are required:

    • Signed Authorisation form from a Registered Training Organisation; or
    • Electrician’s Supervised (ES Class) license; or
    • L license from candidates who have held an ES Class license previously; or
    • Electrician’s (E Class) license. This is required for REC Technical Assessment; or
    • Trades Recognition Certificate (for an Electrician) issued by Trades Recognition Australia or
    • Letter from ESV indicating eligibility to sit for the licensing assessment.
    • Although not compulsory, most LEA candidates enroll in courses which prepare them specifically for the LEA assessments. Enquire at any training college which conducts electrical apprenticeship training to find out the fees, dates and length of their courses. EPIC does not run any courses.

LEA Practical Assessment Requirements The LEP and SWP assessments are practical examinations. These assessments are to be regarded as 'real life' situations and as such all candidates must dress appropriately. Appropriate clothing and work boots must be worn. The assessor has the authority to deny any candidate entry to the examination if they are incorrectly attired. Assessment Dates Upcoming dates for the individual LEA assessments are updated, regularly, on the EPIC ITB website.

Please be aware that places fill quickly!

Apply to the LEA Administration via leabookings@epicitb.com, mail or in person to secure a place.

Bookings can be taken over the phone only if an exam has been sat before and payment is to be made by credit card. Appropriate documentation needs to be sited before this can be done.

Enquiries about available dates may be made on (03) 9654 1299 or through licensing@epicitb.com. EPIC ITB also conducts LEA Assessments in regional Victoria at various times during the year.

Upcoming assessment dates for the LEA mobile caravan are listed below. Please book through the TAFE for regional assessments.

  4. Hi,

Yeah I'm off to Perth probably mid June.

Have got the info from Leslie re college course just need to

    Book and pay for it.

Have you landed a job yet?

    Did it take you long?

    Thanks

    Gary

    Hi Gary

I was lucky with the course, was told by Energy Safety that they had changed rules and I would have to do log book etc but when I arrived and phoned them they said they had scrapped the idea and I could sit two week course. So it was a all bit of a rush as I only found all this out on the Friday and course started Monday. Spoke with Leslie Dryden at Balcatta Tafe (told her I had wife, six kids two dogs etc etc to feed and no money) she was great, squeezed me in for the Monday start.

As far as work goes and locality, all depends what you want to do and where you are going to be?

In general they all talk over here like its slow, believe me they haven't got a clue what slow is. I would compare it to the U.K. back in 2002/3 when all were booming. Mind you I am talking about W.A. I don't know about other states etc.

Big article in 'The West' the other day saying gov just given go ahead to 61 new major projects and they have estimated they will need 400 construction/engineering workers per week every week for the next two years, 41000 in total.

    Hope this helps

    Andy

  5. WA as a lot of work on and government have just given the go ahead for 61 new major projects, so only going to get busier.

I arrived in Perth on 24/11/11 having 176 and OSTR as assessed by Vetassess. On the 05/12/12 I started two week 'Electrical Trade Licence' course which I passed and on the 22/12/12 I picked up my Electricians Licence from Energy Safety (thats it all done).

    Hope this helps

    Andy

    Hello tommo,

just what I wanted to hear!

i presume you booked your course before arrival In Oz?

did you use a friends address?

did you get the course for the subsidised rate?

whats your prospects of work now and any idea what rate to expect can you expect it to be relatively local to where you live ie within an hours travel?

    Thanks for the info

    all the best

    gary

  6. Hi guys

I posted a while back that i had an email from energy safety saying that in wa you now had to do the gap training/log book method to get your a licence. I arrived in perth last week and approached energy safety on how to start my gap training and obtain the restricted workers licence. To my amazement and delight they told me they have scrapped the idea of gap training and to enable me to obtain my a licence all i have to do is the ETL course (Electrical Trade Licence) at one of theyre nominated TAFE's.

I apologise if this is already common knowledge as i have not been keeping up to date with the forum.

    Thanks Andy

Thats great news thanks for posting. do you know when the earliest you can do the TAFE course is?

ive emailed Balcatta a few times and they said they can not take bookings for next year yet

    any ideas ?

whats the work situation looking like any idea of rates?

    Thanks

    gary
