Don't say router it means err how do I put this.... I'm sure you know what I mean. Oh and it isn't pronounced root her.
Yeah, I know about this. I work in IT networking, which predominantly uses, yes you've guessed it - routers! I move to Australia in a few weeks and have been pronouncing it the Australian way recently in work, just to get into the habit (much to my colleagues annoyance).

Hello everyone,
I thought I'd bump the thread to see how everyone is getting on. The thread lost its way a bit, it was originally for people already in OZ that were looking for work rather than those that had not yet arrived, but all is welcome. So if you are in OZ and looking, how are you all finding it at the moment? I have read that the IT job market is saturated right now and difficult.
Would your perception of the IT job market reflect this, or have you had difference experiences?
Remember to mention your location and what you do in your reply, or a clear picture of the current state of affairs will not be achieved.
Cheers!
PW.
Managed to secure a Cisco CCNP network role based in Melbourne from the UK - I am an NZ passport holder. Start in July.
Various forums mention how tough it is out there, but I guess it depends what IT area you work in, your skills and visa situation?
-
Many thanks guys. PM'd you both

Hi all,
Travelling alone - I'll be in the Gold Coast from late June staying with family, then flying down to Melbourne some time before the 8th July when I start a new job. I was planning to arrive in Melbourne around 4 or 5 days before (around the 3rd July) and stay in a backpackers for a couple of days while I look for a short term let. I was thinking about renting short term, in a fully furnished place, with bills included for up to 3 months until I settled down a little.
I will be bringing 2 suitcases with me - that's it!
I've seen some pretty good studio flats in between the $350 - $400 range. I've been looking around the St Kilda area, as that's quite close to South Melbourne - where my new job is.
Are there any 'gotchas' that I should look out for?
What should I bring out with me to secure a let? (I have my last 2 renting references)
I assume I can move in pretty quick (like a couple of days) from when I've seen the property?
Do these places have Internet access generally?
Does this sound like a good plan?!
Many thanks in advance!

Try meetup.com
Lots of different social groups. A lot of the people in these groups will likely be in the same boat you're in and should be friendly, and open to making new friends

About a month ago they were advertising a number of networking roles Just because they are not now doesn't mean they were filled, I'll ask around. If you PM me your email address, I will reply with mine and you can send me your CV.
PM sent

Thank you and Bookmarked! I'm looking to get out to Australia very soon - I'm on a 4 week notice period with current employers.
I'm a Cisco CCNP Network Analyst/Engineer. Long shot - but do you know of any roles that may be suitable for me?
-
March - October. Avoid the beginning of he year like the plague - dead as a door nail over Christmas and every man and his dog looking for work and accommodation. The new financial year has little to do with anything really.
I was led to believe that as the financial year began, companies budgets would be renewed and more roles would be available for a period of time. Perhaps I've been misinformed?
-
In general, what are the best months to arrive and land some work? I am hearing reports that July & August are best because the tax year starts on 1st July - is this true?
I'm specifically looking for IT work, personally.
Thanks in Advance!
-
Send yr CV to Tom too then, mentioning my name - Dave - so he knows it's via PIO.
Thanks Dave,
Do I just send to the contact email on the website, FAO Tom?

I'm like you bugskaran30, an IP Network Engineer, looking to move to Australia in the very near future. Looking forward to seeing the responses

Hi Guys,
I am in a great delimma to select the ANZSCO best suited to my profession and seek your assistance.
I am working as a Senior Network Engineer (IP DATA Network) and have in depth knowledge on routing and routed protocols, networking technologies etc however I am bit confused between ANZSCO 263111 (Computer network and system engineer) & 263113 (Network Analyst) under the group 2631 (Computer Network Professionals)..Pls assist me if you have been assessed through the same channel.
Feel free to contact me if you need any clarification regarding the same.
I'd say you were a Network Analyst. network & Systems engineer indicates someone who gets involved with servers as well as network, rather than a Network Analyst, who is more specialised in networking.

Freytruck - I can sympathize but rather than giving up I think you should try Sydney or Melbourne if you are able to. I've been here 2 months and while January was complete dead February has been far more positive. I've now got 2 offers to juggle, I work in IT. Like another has said apply directly and best of luck. By the way, there is a simple reason agencies aren't returning your calls, it's more than likely they don't have jobs available despite what they advertise.
Chortlepuss - From previous posts I know you've been struggling in the IT market, I would again encourage you to try Sydney or Melbourne if you are able to. The job market is OK, it's not flush with jobs but if you have right skillset it's still possible to find positions. Good luck!
Hi Bromney. Do you mind me asking what sector of IT you work in?
Cheers

I am a skilled I.T. worker from London with 6 years experience, currently living in Perth, lucky enough to be on a great volunteer programme in the Swan Valley learning all about wine, and living here too. I arrived in Perth January 2012 on a Working Holiday Visa and have struggled ever since to get a permanent job. In fact, this voluntary job is the only thing currently keeping me here and I do love it.
I have applied for over 300 jobs in the last year, mainly to mining companies, and mainly through Seek and other online recruitment portals. I rarely get a response back. I have however had a few responses by emailing companies directly, but have never gone past interview stage.
I am not prepared to give up, and next week I will start handing out my CVs to everyone on St George's Terrace! My advice to anyone is please don't give up, and don't rely on online applications. I have recently got my White Card, took the MARCSTA course, first aid ticket, and got my HR licence. Hopefully these will work in my favour come my march along the Terrace next week!
Good luck.
This is very interesting. may I ask what line of IT you work/worked in?
I'm a CCNP level (soon to be CCNP), network engineer and have roughly the same years experience as you do, but intend to go to Sydney rather than Perth. I really don't want to go out there and be left without work!

What's the current state with IT jobs in Sydney? Have things picked up since the Christmas lull? I'm looking to move in April

Hi,
I'm hoping that someone out there can shed some light on this for me. I have an online business in the UK (.co.uk) which provides details of various services in Australia via partnership arrangements with Australian companies. I now want to purchase a .com.au domain name so that when we move I can carry on this business, but with a more local domain name along with the .co.uk business. I've searched online and cannot appear to do this as I don't have an Australian Trademark or Australian Company set up. Does anyone know if there is a way of purchasing a .com.au domain in the UK as the last thing I need is to move and someone has already purchased the domain that I need.
Thank so much, Rich
Just thinking out of the box, is it possible to buy a .com domain and add a sub-domain under that using the Australian country code? So: au.xx(domain)xx.com
It would be a last gasp solution, but is an option. SEO will unfortunately suffer if searching from Australia
-
Yes, you're spot on. You also need to do that with salaries. So a salary in oz that looks good when converted back to pounds at the exchange rate really may not be that hot when converted back at 2.5. Using the exchange rate to compare is wrong.
So, if I earn 30,000GBP in the UK, and get a job in Australia (paying 2.5 times the UK figure) that pays 75,000AUS that means that everything works out at more or less the same between both countries, with perhaps Australia working out cheaper - as I see it anyway...

I did search on www.seek.com.au using 'SAP CRM' as keywords. Here is first page of results.

Keywords help you find exactly what you're looking for.
Things to know about Keyword Search:
- It is not case sensitive
- It automatically ignores common words such as the, an, also
- It ignores special chars like %, /
- It interprets all spaces, commas, dashes and asterisks as AND
- It recognises common phrases regardless of the spelling such as part time, part-time, parttime
How keyword search works:
When you enter a word, Search looks for a match in:
- Anywhere in the Job Ad
- Our SEEK classifications
When you enter 2 or more words, the results returned will be:
- All jobs containing all of those words
- All jobs containing any of those words
- Techniques
- Example
- Use OR between each word if you want to search for individual words
- Sales OR Management (finds all jobs with Sales and all jobs with Management in the description)
- Use NOT to exclude certain words
- Sales NOT Management (finds only the jobs which have Sales in the description and not ones with just Management)
- Use AND to broaden your search criteria
- Sales AND Management (finds only the jobs which have both Sales and Management in the job ad)
- Use a combination of techniques by using brackets
- Management NOT (sales OR account) (finds all management jobs but not with sales or account)
- Use "quotes" to search for a specific phrase
- "sales management" (finds jobs only with this specific phrase)

Not quite sure how to read into the figures? For example:
If an 'inexpensive meal' costs 8GBP in UK & 11GBP in Aus, does that mean it actually costs 11GBP in Australia when directly exchanging (so roughly 16.5AUS dollars when actually paying in Aus). In my mind, taking into account that generally Australians get paid 2.5 times what the UK rates are, then 11GBP (16.5AUS) actually looks quite cheap? As 16.5 divided by 2.5 equals 6.5GBP, again when directly translated...
If the above makes sense, lol

I think plenty of people do come out here without jobs lined up - we did (although were on WHV's at the time, we have PR now) and we secured temp jobs within a few weeks of arriving.
This was 18 months ago though, and the job market is at an all time low now. It really does depend on your skills and experience, but be prepared for it to be a hard slog. My OH has been out of work since the beginning of September and hasn't even had a sniff of a decent job in all that time - but if you've got the right skills and someone likes the look of your CV you might be one of the lucky ones!
I believe the employment market has contracted. 'All time low' is an exaggeration I think - although I know the Brisbane area is suffering badly, unless someone can prove otherwise.
-
I'm more in Development, but I'll keep my ear out.
Thanks Bibbs
-
I've just been contacted about another role. After a Delphi / .NET developer / Team Leader in Perth.
Let me know if anyone would be interested.
If you ever hear of any CCNA/CCNP level Network jobs, let me know
-
i'd second that - very few PM vacancies around (or BA either). Roles have hundreds of applicants, all very well qualified. If they know the recruiter they're in - local contacts are everything here. Brisbane is probably the worst job market in Australia at the moment, unless you have SAP or something v specialist. I would advise anyone in IT thinking of coming to QLD to seriously consider their position before giving up any contract in the UK.
What about Sydney? I would be leaving a perm job (Cisco Network engineer at CCNP level) to go to Sydney in Early Feb.
-
Not much else for it but hard graft and persistence, seek.com, recruitment agents, the usual channels. Not many manage it but some do and you might be one if that minority. It isn't really a sector that needs to look overseas for candidates as far as I know.
Thanks Rupert. Can you recommend any agencies?

Snap! I have exactly the same as you to transfer nd have a job to arrive to.
I was maybe just going to transfer a couple of grand just to see me through. There's always the UK credit card though I suppose...
