Hello everyone,
I thought I'd bump the thread to see how everyone is getting on. The thread lost its way a bit, it was originally for people already in OZ that were looking for work rather than those that had not yet arrived, but all is welcome. So if you are in OZ and looking, how are you all finding it at the moment? I have read that the IT job market is saturated right now and difficult.
Would your perception of the IT job market reflect this, or have you had difference experiences?
Remember to mention your location and what you do in your reply, or a clear picture of the current state of affairs will not be achieved.
Cheers!
PW.
Managed to secure a Cisco CCNP network role based in Melbourne from the UK - I am an NZ passport holder. Start in July.
Various forums mention how tough it is out there, but I guess it depends what IT area you work in, your skills and visa situation?

What's the current state with IT jobs in Sydney? Have things picked up since the Christmas lull? I'm looking to move in April

I'm more in Development, but I'll keep my ear out.
Thanks Bibbs

I've just been contacted about another role. After a Delphi / .NET developer / Team Leader in Perth.
Let me know if anyone would be interested.
If you ever hear of any CCNA/CCNP level Network jobs, let me know

There's a piece at The Australian today. (Not behind their pay wall.)
It sounds like things aren't great.
Yeah, you hear some doom & gloom stories, then there are some green shoots: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/australian-it/it-jobs/it-employment-tipped-to-improve-as-tech-chiefs-plan-big-year/story-fna12gpc-1226399160429
Like you say, mixed reports.

Hey, I'm nothing if not inconsistent.
The impression I get is that things are slowing in the East, but that they're not as bad as in the UK by a long way. There's still work there, and in some cases the money is decent. But it's not a boom time by any stretch.
And, yeah, I'm hearing mixed messages.
No worries. Thanks for the update
I'm guessing as long as one is willing to work at anything (even McDonalds), for a few months, until the right IT job comes along, then one cannot go wrong.
I'd like to think that with several years networking experience with a FTSE 100 company would land you a similar role sooner or later, no matter what the economy is like.
I guess the problem is how it works out economically in relative terms compared to the UK.
I'll shut up now - thinking out loud, on my keyboard

Does anyone know what percentage extra wage a contractor can expect compared to a perm. In the UK, it is around 50% to 100% extra. Is it the same in Sydney/Melbourne?
Thanks in advance

It might be worth having a chat to a few agents or locals. An IT contractor in Sydney was telling me that things are good down there, whereas the UK jobs market has been poor all year.I've got a friend over in Adelaide, and he reckons that the economy is slowing, as did another who left Melbourne for China a few months back.
I get the impression that things are bad in the east and booming in the west, which might affect IT roles, since these tend to be concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne.
Contracts aren't bad, as they tend to pay more. At least, they do in the UK. Unfortunately rates are down, and the gaps between them are wider, which makes it a tougher business to be in.
Hi Graemsay,
Sorry, I'm not having a go, just trying to ascertain the facts. You say that Sydney seems to be doing ok for IT roles, whereas a little later you say that things are bad in the east, where Sydney is, obviously. Do you know for sure if things are bad or good, or do you mean they are good, but may turn bad? I'm probably translating your posts incorrectly, hence I need the clarification

Hello there,
Just thought I'd post to see how everyone that has posted is getting on so far? New posters welcome of course!
Regards,
P.
Yes, I would also like to hear updates. I was going to head over to Sydney in early Nov, but may be a little too close to Christmas and the slowdown of recruitment, so have decided to apply for jobs from UK Nov, and possibly just go to Sydney in late Jan regardless of whether I had a job lined up or not. I would then take my chances from there. I work in IT Networking - at CCNP level.
Anyone else applying remotely?
How's the IT job market these days?

Yeah, I know about this. I work in IT networking, which predominantly uses, yes you've guessed it - routers! I move to Australia in a few weeks and have been pronouncing it the Australian way recently in work, just to get into the habit (much to my colleagues annoyance).
