  1. A very thought provoking thread. Popped on here for the first time in a while because of the exact same thing, possible move back to England after 8yrs. Its tough for me and the wife as we have 3 grown up daughters still at home and plugging away at life as best they can. Brisbane is pleasant enough but the job offers are dwindling, and to be honest the wife and I at mid 40's would love to return for that sense of belonging. convincing the daughters will be hard. But what does one do? they rely on us for a roof over their heads. they couldn't afford it here alone. Our parents are getting older and the wife especially would like to be home to help her mother. My head swims with this constantly, and that doesn't help one bit. Im hoping to arrange a family "sit down" and attempt to gauge the current feeling. One daughter (eldest) is on the rebound from a 7yr relationship and Im pretty certain she will not want to return. Trouble is you bring them here. They settle (to a degree) and then you find you haven't. what to do? We only came here initially for 2 yrs. The wife says Australia is akin to a Venus flytrap. (A little harsh) But that sense of belonging is a strong pull back to Blighty. All the sunny days in the world cannot match it. I find myself rambling now and of no use to no one. In a nut shell.....home is where the heart is.
  2. Mmmm tough one, off the top of my head Fiddlesticks Im thinking if its primary residence only and not a secondary investment property transaction then no, I very much doubt you will be taxed in the UK. (Currency converting fees maybe an issue mind. But Im sure you have thought of that. I have something of a similar nature. never sold my UK house. Rented it out instead. Now after 8 yrs looking to return if we can persuade our grown up daughters to follow. (tough one) We bought here after a couple of years. Not sure what implications we face as dual nationals. what house to sell when to sell tax implications both sides. Anyway yours sounds pretty straight forward and best of luck Mark
  3. Just walking out the door Terry but that's a very thought provoking and funny reply. Wars aside I cannot help but lean your way of thinking. Will mull more when I have stopped laughing. Thanks for your time. Regards. BTB
  4. Hello Andrew in case this gets to you quicker. I have posted this elsewhere on the site in a thread. (sorry if this is bad etiquette) ( I have a dilemma and time is not on my side in the slightest. (my own fault) To the point I am ex UK Copper who has transferred to the QLD police. I have a deferred pension with the UK service just worked out for me at 150K I have been chatting to this fellow (IFA) from the UK that deals with QROPS and the likes of me. He has pointed me in the direction of Malta and the Momentum Pension investment people. additionally he has recommended the Royal London 360 fund for a 10 year period. I have the papers here and if I can get them to him by mid next week I have a chance to beat the deadline for these kid of pensions the government are looking to ban from QROPS. (4th April) I have mulled over this for a while but I see pensions and funds and super as a dark art but im learning out of necessity. My police pension I can draw down on at 60 (it may change again im sure) its currently worth 11.5k per year. its fairly solid I suppose being a government pension but I am aware that the QROPS provides lots of advantages too. Q. Do I stay or do I jump into QROPS (tough to call everyone's different I know, but I'm likely to want to travel between the UK and here in QLD when I retire) Q. Are these fees sent to me by the IFA chap, after some pressure I hasten to add, fair with the what's on the table or exorbitant? Q. Momentum and RL360 any good? With the time as it is I haven't time to engage anyone else I need to put up or shut up. The table below breaks down the costs and gives you an idea of the costs based on a portfolio amount of £150k. Any positive advice would be great. Its a school boy error to have left it this late. Thanks in advance to any kind souls out there. The costs shown also factor in a proposed portfolio, but this can change largely depending on the underlying investments, for example if you purchase all single company stocks this cost becomes 0%. Let me know your thoughts. Kind Regards
