  1. Your notice that Australians say 'but ' at the end of a lot of sentences .. Not sure what it really means but be prepared .
  2. Not quite living the dream as the brocher says. At least you tell the truth .
  3. i think you have to do a years gap training as well, do your self a favour and enjoy the rest of your time here, don't bother about an A grade, it's a waste of time and too much money. If you have a job to go to in the UK then take it as you won't be much better off here unless your very lucky and land a job on a EBA firm. Just being honest .
  4. Not that I know of mate, I do know that AB tilbury's who are a union firm have been looking for people to start on a masters store in joondalup. I know they work under a EBA agreement , but a different one to us. Give them a call
  5. I think Colin the good times are coming to an end, we had a union meeting this week and they are saying the smaller firms who pay 30-35 an hour are getting bigger and bigger and are now able to undercut the bigger EBA firms. The bigger firms are now struggling to get work because our rate is that much higher, the new EBA will start to get negotiated next year with a proposal for us now to have a two tier payment, on jobs under a certain value to be paid a tier 2 hourly rate ( ie 35 ) and bigger contracts a tier 1 payment. Our hourly rate will be just under 48 by the time our current agreement is up. So personally I think the gravey train is slowing up and lower wages will become the norm. The big firms are starting to struggle now
  6. Have to agree with you, I've always beat the drum about coming all this way and earning 1000 bucks a week. You have to take your tax off that as well . In my opinion it cost a 1000 a week to live In perth. Even if your on 35 an hour as an A grade it's only another 400 a week ( before deductions) . So 1400 a week as an A grade will only clear about 1100 weekly.I know the uk's still in a pickle and right now your fine more chance to find work here but the sacrifices we pay by being so far away from loved ones is it all worth it for the sake of having 200 dollars left at the end of the week....? If your on one wage that's all your have left and find yourself surviving here and not living.. Just my opinion
  7. I think you have to do a 2 week course when you get here ($2000) then be an apprentice for a year filling in a log book then you sit a final exam.
  8. All that and then have to greatly lower your standards when you hold your lashing licence . An insult to British sparks
  9. Can't see why not. WHV seems the way forward if your young enough . Pay for 5 years when you get the licence then return at your pleasure
  10. If you can come over for a month on a working holiday visa, do the 2 week course , no need for a years gap training. Return to the UK with an A class licence then com over on th misses visa. Simple
  11. You wait to you get here, if your a time served spark from the UK you will not believe how low the standard is. What makes me smile is they think their a higher standard than us. An Ozzie spark would be pumped after the first day on a UK site. Don't bring tools because you won't need any, I class it as de-skilling process.all you need is a Phillips screwdriver , terminal , cutters, pliers, tape measure, tool belt which I have renamed bullshit belt. All Ozzie sparks have one so the name suits ..!
  12. How comes there's no work in Melbourne, was on the understanding work was ok there..?
  13. A class in perth will earn you 35 on a rubbish firm or 43-45 on a good one . Ta around 30 an hour
  14. And punish the people/families who really need the A class licence..!
  15. I have found myself over the last 18 months that I work just as many hours (generally) here in oz than I did in the uk. We start earlier which is nice but my total hours are the same, I still do a half day on a Saturday , so the only real difference is we work in the sunshine. Not 100% sure you have a better quality of life...? That's just my experience
  16. Good luck too, would like to add I have never felt adjusting your belt / cutting back on things as a positive thing to do, I see it if your going to be skint you might as well be skint in the uk rather than oz. I came to oz to earn as much as I can as quickly as I can, why move so far to be in the same or if not a worse financial position...?
  17. The trouble is with Australia is you need to be earning top dollar to survive , with only a small amount of firms paying top dollar.
  18. I was lucky to fall on my feet there, but feel if I wasn't working for who I do I would be in the same boat, Australia is overated..!
  19. You don't need tools here, pliers , terminal , Phillips , tape measure and a pad saw. That's it I'm not joking either
  20. Just a bit of advice, I stand side by side with you on all aspects of work BUT the sunshine thing soon wears off. Prior to 2009 I had a way better lifestyle in the uk and had a better disposable income than here in 2012. I fully understand that right now this is the better place but I can never recall prior to the recession even worrying about money like I do here today in a country thats not in recession. When the uk spark grows a backbone and starts a fight back on terms and conditions which is slowly starting to happen then its the uk all day.
