  1. Money in the bank may not bar you from getting Newstart but if you resign from your job you have to wait 13 weeks.

I won't leave I'll wait till they push.. There's about 2500 of us to go by Christmas so I have a high chance of the chop... I'll be able to claim then

  2. More than welcome. Plenty of lethal little ball bearings to go around in my possession. We'll get the job done in half the time if you attend. No one need to have felt they 'missed out' then.

Shall I wear a hard hat if ball bearings are present

  3.

Cheers Paul! I'm accessing the site from my mobile so if I've missed something really obvious I apologise. Their should be a sticky thread with just the processes for getting your licence . Apologise once again as I assume this has already been covered :)

look mem I'm on your side.. All I'm mean is if your asking people what courses you need to do your going to struggle badly . Do your home work and do it well
  4. The whole construction industry here is a disgrace. Industrial sparky work here is like domestic in the UK lol. TPS and plastic conduit LMAO. Houses that are like sheds. Yet we sparks have to go do a 1 year course to learn about how all cables in a 16A socket circuit go back to a joint box in a house attic as this is the best way to do it. The trade test practical is a bit of wood with a couple of sockets that you can throw the cables behind no clips etc and connect a piece of **** db. No wonder the standard is useless .In the UK we have to do metal conduit , trunking , Pyro and it has to look neat.

I feel the same mate. Feel sory for the lads coming over, I understand things haven't been great since 2009 but I'm hearing a lot more of things getting better.. Heard some blokes are on $30 an hour in perth now.. Big gamble for a man and his family considering the cost of it here

  5. As an nearly Australian qualified electrician (final gap training exam in November ) who has gone through the artc route

i feel that this thread is very damaging and distressing to many electricians who wish to move to oz

Over the past two years I have witnessed a lot of electricians from the uk go through extreme financial hardship with many returning home because of misinformation provided through many different sources

as someone who is Australian born and raised with no wife or kids of my own i contemplated returning to live in the UK myself due to the complete mess around that this whole process is (lived there for 13 years)

now that i have completed this (nearly) i feel that i have valuable information (like many others do ) that could assist others who wish to immigrate as an electrician

If this "poms in oz forum" really wants to help it needs to remove this thread of outdated information as a sticky and start a new thread (as a sticky) that is

dont get me wrong there is a fair bit of good information here but it is both the older information and those who reply that went through the older processes that are causing problems for new applicants/immigrants

so mods and senior members what do you think ?

As somebody who is going through the new process why don't you write all you have done in a new thread.. Things have changed ( for the worse) so tell people what they have to do

  6. Hi

my hubby is an electrician has been for 19 years

we came out 2 years ago from brighton

we went threw a agent took 3 years

As for looking for work, my hubby wrote down all the firms near the suburb we wanted to live in and went to them. more than once. he he he, shows determination...

He worked for a small company then, got poached to work for another firm

He is now earning good money supervisor of the largest firm in perth

Also get your restricted licence before you come out

as hubby had to what 3 months to complete the full licence.(no pay)

His mate came out from the UK,he had the restricted licence and went to college the very next day. Had his licence within days

    GOOD LUCK

Who does he work for then...? Nilsen's...??

  7. I have sat and passed the capstone now but i have to wait to do the 4 day comms course next month as its the earliest i could get on it. I think they have only run 1 previously and wait for the numbers so i have been waiting 2 months for that. You will have homework to do and a project all to be passed at 100% then the 4 days comms test( another $200!!!) then the capstone.

Have you managed to find work yet?

    What an absolute liberty

  8. Hi,

If anyone on here can clarify my situation on here it would be appreciated.

I have read all the pages on this thread and find it hard to believe how difficult it is for UK sparks to get their A grade.

Basically I am here on a WHV and am led to believe that if I manage to get an ARTC Certificate from the TRA I can go on the two week course and obtain my A grade straight away. Time is running out before my Visa ends and am wondering wether getting my ARTC is worth it. If I have this it will be easy to apply for PR when I get back to the UK as they have changed the process and will give you PR on a skilled visa that is free if you have a ARTC.

The whole process seems crazy, and unfair for someone who is not on a WHV. That is why I am finding it hard to believe. can someone please clarify.

    Thanks

i think you have to do a years gap training as well, do your self a favour and enjoy the rest of your time here, don't bother about an A grade, it's a waste of time and too much money. If you have a job to go to in the UK then take it as you won't be much better off here unless your very lucky and land a job on a EBA firm. Just being honest .
  9. I think Colin the good times are coming to an end, we had a union meeting this week and they are saying the smaller firms who pay 30-35 an hour are getting bigger and bigger and are now able to undercut the bigger EBA firms. The bigger firms are now struggling to get work because our rate is that much higher, the new EBA will start to get negotiated next year with a proposal for us now to have a two tier payment, on jobs under a certain value to be paid a tier 2 hourly rate ( ie 35 ) and bigger contracts a tier 1 payment. Our hourly rate will be just under 48 by the time our current agreement is up. So personally I think the gravey train is slowing up and lower wages will become the norm. The big firms are starting to struggle now

  10. Have to agree with you, I've always beat the drum about coming all this way and earning 1000 bucks a week. You have to take your tax off that as well . In my opinion it cost a 1000 a week to live In perth. Even if your on 35 an hour as an A grade it's only another 400 a week ( before deductions) . So 1400 a week as an A grade will only clear about 1100 weekly.I know the uk's still in a pickle and right now your fine more chance to find work here but the sacrifices we pay by being so far away from loved ones is it all worth it for the sake of having 200 dollars left at the end of the week....? If your on one wage that's all your have left and find yourself surviving here and not living.. Just my opinion

  11. Hi lads

i just done my electrical licence exam in dublin last week trough future skills, i tau i got the grade a licence straight away but i heard its called offshore technical skills record... Does anyone know what i have to do next? Im landing in oz in aug.. Will it take long after i land to get my licence or will i have it before i go?

Any help would be great cheers

I think you have to do a 2 week course when you get here ($2000) then be an apprentice for a year filling in a log book then you sit a final exam.

  12. He cant get a WHV as he is over 30. And you can only apply for an ARTC when you reside in Australia so its still around 3 months total. Best to come on your wife's visa as the gap training really can take around 18 months by the time you get your test booked etc and you also have to do a comms test as well. I was on the first class last September and have averaged at least 50 hrs a week for the log book and if i am lucky i will be complete and licensed by June. If i am not it will be September. So on that basis if i worked 38 hrs a week it would take over a year as its not just filling the log book its time to book tests and then actually receive your license. Also doing homework and overtime to finish your logbook quicker while trying to settle in a new country with a young family is not really ideal.

All that and then have to greatly lower your standards when you hold your lashing licence . An insult to British sparks
