I’ve had a couple of rentals and was always asked for a deposit to secure the unit, rather than the full bond. Deposit would be first month’s rent, if I recall. Bond being 3 months

Then meet with the letting agent and you have to sign contracts in the office with them and pay the bond shortly after.

Bond in WA is 4 weeks rent.

There are shortages all over the country, I believe.   Although I think in some industries (not necessarily yours), it's highlighting the way in which Australian employers have dropped the ball on training, and also aren't prepared to pay a fair salary for the skills they're seeking.

A couple of small examples at a junior level, from hospitality:  I was struck by a Melbourne restaurant manager complaining that they can't get waiters, and as a last resort,  they've had to hire an untrained local 18-year-old.  Another example was a café, again short of waiters, which had hired local retirees.   The presenter interviewed the retirees, women who looked to be in their late 50s/early 60s.  They expressed delight at being given the chance of a job and said they hoped the café might consider keeping them on once the borders opened.  What I found concerning was that they didn't seem at all confident the cafe would keep them on.  Perhaps because they had to be paid more than a backpacker?

I hope these ladies do get to keep their jobs.  You dont need qualifications to waitress in a cafe, that certainly shows by some of the service you get!  Untrained 18 year old!  Whats wrong with that, as long as you can be pleasant to your customers and remember a few orders I think most people could manage!

I fully agree and understand hence I am exploring options that I have. I am aware of the expenses, I am already supporting them so that does not bother me at all. They won't need aged care as they will stay with us and we will be taking care of them until they are alive. We do not believe in sending parents to old age house which is very common culture there.

Maybe it would be best to return and look after them in your home country if you dont believe in the way things are done in Australia - just saying!

  4. At the moment a lot of plots for new builds are so small you wouldn't fit a pool in.   I rented new builds previously in Melbourne and I would say be careful who your builder is!  The show houses may look good but a lot of houses are very poor quality.

Just depends what you are looking for as well, I like having a bit of space rather than just having a colourbond fence and 6 inches of ground between us and the neighbours. Now in Perth to get land that is affordable you would be looking a good bit out from the city, so consider travel time as well if you are working in the CBD.

Hi mate, did you have to provide any additional documentation when moving interstate after test and prior to ceremony ? Also, when you called what info did they ask for ?

    Thank you

Hi I dont think so, it was a few years ago.  I am sure I only phoned them up and said I had moved to Perth, must have quoted a reference, told them the council area I was in and it was all done, then I got an invite a few months later.

Panic due to Covid - isolation is suddenly attractive.  WA is Covid-free and it looks like the Premier is going to dig his heels in to keep it that way, which is attractive.

Melbourne was vibrant because of all the social and cultural activities, which are all shut down, so it's now more boring than Perth.  In spite of the current reopening, many people feel it will never fully recover - so if life is going to be boring, they might as well live somewhere cheaper.

And let's not get into a discussion over whether Perth is boring.  Some people are blissfully happy with a reasonable variety of activities.  Some of us are greedy and are bored unless we have the plethora of choice offered by large cities (over 2 million people).

I quite happily live in Perth. I have also lived in Melbourne for a few years. If I wish to make a comment on either I will- this is a public forum!

Well I say $70 but I've not actually had a bill yet, just what the estate agent said to allow.

Still I paid £45 a month in the UK so still cheaper than that.

The bill will come from the real estate so make sure they are onlybcharging you for usage and ask to see the bill from the water Corp that is excessive when you only pay for usage, the landlord has to pay the rest

Water $70 a month and council tax I dont pay whilst renting.

Jeez what are you doing with all that water?   You only pay usage when renting, the most we ever paid was around $45 for 2 months

  9. You need to remember that if you dont take out Private within 1 year of arriving in the country as PR you have to pay a supplement which is worked out on how many years you are over 31.  This is charged for 10 years.  We have had to take hospital and extras because of income, but have only ever used for Dental and Optical!  If your income is over the threshold and you dont have private you have to pay a further medicare charge at tax time which works out not much more that paying your premium for a year.

What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?

Initiated by the Government, the Medicare levy surcharge aims to encourage Aussies to take out private hospital cover – therefore reducing the load on the public Medicare system.

Not everyone is required to pay the Medicare levy surcharge, but if you’re single and earning more than $90,000 or part of a family earning $180,000, you may be charged. We’ve put together a handy online table that lets you calculate exactly how much your surcharge will be, but to give you an idea, if your taxable income is $100,000, you might expect to pay an extra $1,000.

Annual taxable income Medicare levy surcharge
$90,000 or less 0.0% (no extra tax)
    $90,001-$105,000 1.0%
    $105,001-$140,000 1.25%
    $140,001 or more 1.5%

Above table: Thresholds for individuals for 2019/20 financial year1

Combined annual taxable income Medicare levy surcharge
$180,000 or less 0.0% (no extra tax)
    $180,001-$210,000 1.0%
    $210,001-$280,000 1.25%
    $280,001 or more 1.5%

I have spoken with illawarra legal aid and a lawyer called ann woods . She says to me because my son was born here he is a Australian citizen , she also stated that as his father my name is on the birth certificate also I did a DNA test too just to add on to show I am the father .

She says do a Australian federal police check certificate and with being from the UK a police check.  If I prove these 2 checks with no criminal records and my birth certificate this would give me automatic residency

Would you not have to be sponsored for a parent visa?

I might wait another month to see what happens on that front. If no news i might just have to build up the courage to ask them if they would allow me to work remotely from Australia. It wold be a perfect solution for me. Fingers crossed!

Would you be able to do that?  You would be resident and working in Australia so taxed here.

Well I think that has answered my own question about the Centrelink aged pension; I have too many assets to get it. I was filling in the form and wondering why they wanted to know not just the rent on my UK home but irritating questions like the area in metres squared and rateable amount.

Even I am entitled to a pension the process has put my off applying for it.

I read my post back and thought it sounded like a bit of a lecture!  I meant that Age Pension is a Centrelink benefit as in Newstart, sickness allowance etc not just that its a benefit if you get it - :-), well I know what I mean!

  13. Age Pension in Australia is a benefit not an entitlement, you do not pay contributions towards a pension the same as you do through National Insurance Contributions in the UK.  He will have superannuation if he has worked all his life.

Still waiting for the quote, we wasnt told there was a delay due to the CoronaVirus and would assume administration staff would be able to work from home?

    Not impressed so far.

Not all companies have the capability to allow staff to work from home.  They would need more than a pen and paper,
