lmc017
Hi folks, So sorry if this has been asked before. Is Travel Insurance with health cover within it e.g. gold standard for GAP year or long term trip sufficient for the health insurance for visa or do I need to purchase pure health insurance cover with BUPA or equivelent Oz company such as IMAN or Australian Unity. I understand once i'm covered by the UK reciprocal scheme. Does this mean that I could technically cancel the travel/health insurance? I just don't want to send of my application without having sorted this out. I'm a little unsure why the question on the 147 asks "Do you hold health insurance cover for all people listed in this application for your stay in Australia?" If I select NO will I be asked to provide it at a later date? Thanks, Laura

Your case officer will e-mail you then to say that it is missing from your application. When my case officer e-mailed me I basically asked what I should do, and he told me I could buy a TRAVEL insurance policy valid for the period I enter Australia until the time I can enrol in Medicare. I bought a policy for ca. 5 weeks, just to be safe because the flight was not booked etc. My visa was granted. hope that helps! I don't know about whether you can cancel insurance such as BUPA on arrival - I read other places that this is indeed possible to do once you have enrolled in Medicare. Sahara77
I got a 21 day policy from walkabout travel insurance that covered me and my family for the visa to be issued and our journey too Australia. Then registered for Medicare when we arrived.
lmc017
Thanks so much folks .... Boots travel insurance or the likes it is! I might just keep it for the year at only £200 as it will cover emergency ambulance cover unlike the reciprocal medicare cover ) It's getting closer now i've got my nomination  (is it just me or are the eyebrows on these wee faces really disturbing!?)
