Research post into Family of 4 (+ 2 dogs) moving to QLD, feedback greatly appreciated

Hello all,

 

My family and I are currently going through the interview process, and will be looking at moving to QLD or WA on a 457 VISA with a view to gaining PR in a couple of years.

 

What we are concentrating on is the level of salary I will need to be living 'comfortably' as a family. I have produced a fairly long list of weekly expenses, now not all of the items on the list will be needed every week, but in the best interest of research it is always better to overdo things.

 

What I would really appreciate is some feedback on any items I may have missed; whether I should be doing my weekly shop elsewhere; or just general advice and guidance. I have generally shopped for familiar named items and I know this is probably a mistake so any hints and tips there would be great too :biggrin:

It really is hard to judge someone else's expenses.

Council tax if you are renting when you first come out then you won't have it to pay. Mine is approx $2200 per year, i use to think it was cheap at $1200 until I realised this was only part of a year :elvis:

Rent $400 per week should be fine in Queensland but I am unsure about Perth.

Thanks for the reply, Yeah it is tricky commenting on someone else's expenses, I guess I just wanted feedback about general price of the items listed and if there were much cheaper alternatives out there with less English origin.

 

I've been trying to recall where I got the council rates from, and I think it was from someone currently living around the areas of QLD that we have been searching, not quite sure how much different Perth will be, but I have allowed the extra AUD100 for bits and bobs which will hopefully cover any extra costs such as higher rates.

Hi,

A few tips and considerations...You can go onto Coles or Woolworths online and do a virtual shop to see what you come up with and try and select cheaper items that the brands you might be used to. We moved from the UK two years ago and I've completely change the way I shop - I use Aldi for essentials (tins etc) because it's way cheaper and then get fruit \ veg and meat at Woolworths. I buy cleaning products and washing powder in bulk at Big W because that works out cheaper. In the UK I used to get everything in the one supermarket and not worry so much. Grocery shopping is expensive here so I've found I have needed to take more care and shop around to keep within budget. I have also ditched many of the international brands for local or home brands and they're fine.

 

Do you want to add home contents insurance??

 

You will also need to consider some expenses for schooling (depending on the age of your children), even at public schools there's the cost of uniforms and stationery to cover.
