Hi there

This has probably been asked many times and is one of those impossible questions to answer. But........how much should/would/did/have you budgeted for the first 6 months down under? We're looking to be based in Melbourne

We're thinking about £25000 based on both of us getting jobs pretty quickly.

Thanks

Does that include buying a used car?

That sounds like plenty. Although I'm not sure about housing costs in Melbourne. We plan to go to Adelaide and I believe cost of living/ housing is cheaper there. Have you gone on some of real estate sites that should give you a figure to work on. If there's just the two of you and you intend to get work soon after arrival I'm sure you'll be fine.

The average Australian Couple without Children spends $47,000 per annum on a comfortable lifestyle. So add in money for you car and inital set up costs and you would be looking at about $70,000 for first year or about GBP29K for the year. If you want a more luxurious lifestyle then add plenty more on there!

Hi Liam,

Do the figues you mention stay true for livingi in Sydney (I can see that's where you're based!) We've had a job offer but it's not great compared to what we earn in London. Would still like to give it a go but don't want to be completely broke the whole time!

thanks

Hi Jess

the cost of living is fairly reasonable in all aussie states but it is the cost of financing a mortgage that hurts most people. If you are selling a home in the UK and not looking at a high mortgage over here then you are streets ahead!

We find that socialising is much cheaper as most parties are in the form of bar-b's at friends homes and you simply bring a long a couple of bottles of wine or case of beer and you have a great time for $40. I get a shock everytime I set foot in Europe and get back into the pub culture as a night with friends costs so much extra when you are paying for the pubs/restaurants profit margin! Having worked in London many years ago I found it was the cost of my social life and rent not my day to day living expenses that killed my budget!

regards

Liam
