Hi folks

First post from us. We are sticking our toes in the water after becoming very disallousioned in the UK with both the work market and the future for the kids.

I am trying to find out what the ICT market is like in Perth from an employment point of view. I am in touch with recruitment consultants but they always deal in specifics, I would like to hear the opinions of someone 'on the ground' as to the comparisions with the Uk market and where they are compared to the UK.

I am also thinking of diversifying into Linux after 13 years a Microsoft man as the skill is more specialised and less common. Would this be of benefit?

cheers

Hi there,

We're not 'on the ground' yet - still in the UK waiting for our visa BUT we do have IT jobs waiting for us in Perth!!

At the end of the day the bigger the city the more work there will be & Australia is no different, if you want endless opportunities then Sydney will offer more. I contacted an old colleague who'd moved back to Australia and this is what he said...

As far as contracting in I.T in Australia is concerned the 3 cities that have most of the work are Syd, Melb and Canberra . Canberra probably pays the best contracting rates as it’s not such a desirable place to live but there are numerous govt departments and there’s so much I.T dev going on. Not sure about Perth but Brisbane has a steady market with some contracts on the go each month. Check out: www.seek.com.au as this is the site we all use over here.

The average rate in Brisbane is AUD$65 per hour. In Canberra it’s around $80. Sydney and melb it’s somewhere in between. So the money is not that great compared to the English pound but the standard of living here is awesome. I’m at the beach every weekend as the weather is super.

I don’t miss the Uk at all to be honest. I had a fantastic time on my ‘working holiday’ but it’s so good to be home and being amongst really laid back people with outstanding weather. It makes such a difference on morale.

(Thought I'd leave some extra bits in to encourage you!)

We set up job alerts with our skills and possible locations on Seek & that gives an indication of the job market for your skills in different areas. We were also considering Adelaide but wrote it off as there was just no jobs for us.

As for Linux/Microsoft, DH has got a Linux job in Perth & I'm sure having a less common skill set helped him BUT before that came up he was thinking of taking a Microsoft contract in the UK to refresh his skills having not used them for 3+ years. There was certainly far more Microsoft jobs but again use Seek to experiment with job searches.

We have taken permie jobs in Oz, in part to get sponsorship but also because we want a fully horizontal lifestyle & not being concerned about maintaining a contract, getting repeat business, networking etc.
