Hi there,

We've finally overcome some truly impressive procrastination over the whole Sydney vs. Melbourne quandary, and booked ourselves flights - a cool 6 days before our visa entry expiry date. So this leads us inexorably to the next dilemma of where exactly within Melbourne to base ourselves.

We're looking for a temporary let while we find our bearings (and with luck city jobs) in the coastal suburbs and are looking for some advice. We've visited St Kilda previously and it seems up our street, but we see various mention of "dodgy bits". Can anyone give any specific recommendations of roads for wide-eyed newcomers to avoid ?

Also how do Elwood and Brighton compare with respect to their bars, restaurants and outside spaces ? We are young(ish) professionals without kids to worry about...

If you have been to St Kilda before its easy to find the dodgy bits. Down on the Esplanade there are nice apartments. Dodgy bits all around the city, like every other city. You can get the light rail to the city from St Kilda or the tram

Elwood is a nice suburb closer than Brighton and Brighton is very nice. I lived in Elwood many moons ago and loved it, walking distance to Ackland Street, which used to be much different to what it is like now though much more European before.

If you have no children and want to be close to the city there is Southbank, East Melbourne South Yarra all walking distance.
