Interstate Move Checklist

Hi, we are a family of 4, thinking of moving to be with family in WA.

Just wanted to comprise a list of things to sort both here in SA, and also in WA.

We own our house, but will rent it for an initial 12 months. We have 2 primary aged children and 4 cats.

Any recommendations on companies used would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Leelee53 welcome to the forum. We have made 3 long distance moves now. The furthest being Melbourne to Cairns.
it is great you have family in WA because they can help with things at that end. Will you live with them or rent your own place?

Have you a timescale for your move? COVID makes things a little more difficult, especially with the situation on pet transport. At the moment there is a huge backlog for pet flights and a lot of the companies are offering road travel and some are inflating their prices. I don’t even know if they would let you check them in as excess baggage now since all the changes. The price recently for 3 cats from Adelaide to Brisbane was $1100 via road transport with Dogmovers. Prior to COVID you could have flown them for $120 each so $360.

When we moved from Melbourne to Cairns we got a removal company to ship our things and a car transport company to bring the car up (that cost $900 but was cheaper than fuel and accommodation on the drive up).

Moving from Townsville to Brisbane we decided to move ourselves. We hired a van (most don’t do one way rentals so you have to factor in doing a return journey which is cheaper than their fees for those that do one way hire). We may have saved some money but it was a lot more stressful this way.

Remember with your car, you will need to re register it in WA this means it will need a safety certificate doing when you get there and going through the process as though it’s a new car.
‘You will also have 3 months to change your driving license over to a WA one.

Another thing is to check ambulance cover. I know in Qld we are covered but we weren’t when we lived in Victoria, I’m not sure of the rules for WA sorry.
