In the city and east, the median asking rent for a house sits at $1040, and the cheapest suburb to rent a house is Waterloo where the median advertised rental is $750 a week or Mascot at $760 a week.

The best value-for-money suburbs for renting an apartment in the city and east, where the median is $660, is Eastlakes at $480 a week or Rushcutters Bay at $500 a week.

On the northern beaches, people can find median advertised rentals at $790 a week in Narraweena and $825 a week in Narrabeen, a far cry from the region’s median asking house rent of $980 a week.

Again, cheaper still are apartments in Avalon that cost $520 a week and $550 a week in Brookvale.
