If you are going to be travelling rural I would look at a Telstra sim. They aren't cheap but they have the best coverage in Australia. We have always used Virgin (Optus network) for cheap plans, although I'm gradually changing over to Optus as we can pool our data and make so many minutes of international calls. Saying that we have just moved and are in a black spot for Optus and can only get Telstra. It may be wise for you to purchase two sims, one for general use on a cheap plan and then a Telstra one for emergencies if you go off the beaten track.
